Franco takes a break (a short one anyway....)

franco

Alright, here are the facts:

on Tuesday 31 January at 22:00, after a huge Cheese joint, I decided to take a short break from smoking cannabis.

How short, I still don't know. For sure I am not going to last too long. Maybe 3-4 days, maybe a week, maybe 2... not longer, I know it already.....

I just like it TOO MUCH!

And now the explanation:

I started smoking cannabis in 1989. Since then, I have smoked cannabis EVERY DAY, except for:

- 7 days in March 1998 (I was in the hospital)

- 14 days in October 1999 (I was in the hospital for 7 days, and feeling like shit for the next 7)

- 7 days in March 2011 (during a bad bronchitis I decided to see if I was able to stop, just to prove myself to myself)

So, let's put this down to the math:

in the last 22 years I have been smoking weed for approximately 8035 days, and NOT smoking it for 28 days (or 0,3% of the days).

I am not far from reaching the 40 years old milestone.

I think it's time to prove myself that I smoke cannabis because I like it, and not because it's just the norm in my life.

And the best way to do that it's to stop for a little bit every once in a while.

I decided to start this blog-entry to share my experience and my feelings with the community. After all, nobody can understand better than my fellow tokers....

And now on with the chronicles:

DAY 1 - waking up knowing that the only breakfast will be a cigarette and a glass of orange juice is not really appealing. But I am determined to do this. The day goes on, I am really busy at the office and I manage to get to lunchtime without too much stress.

After lunch I really struggle, so I allow myself 2 cigarettes in a row.

My colleagues don't know I have stopped weed, and I am not telling anyone for the moment. Avoiding the subject is the best way to not think about it too much.

The rest of the afternoon goes by fast, but then comes the hardest part: the evening.

I eat a nice dinner, play with my kids, then go out in the garden for a cigarette. I am really, really close to giving up. But I don't.

When the kids are in bed I try to distract myself with iPad, TV, iPod, iMac, and Nintendo. It's not enough. I am literally freaking out. My heartbeat is slightly faster than normal, and the palms of my hands are a little sweaty.

Who said weed is not addictive? LOL

Time to go to sleep. I smoke one more cigarette, then lay in bed wide awake for a couple of hours before I finally pass out.

Hard day. Really hard day. But it's normal, it's day 1.

DAY 2 - I woke up less stressed than yesterday. It's all in the mind... ;-)

Even though it's -7 degrees outside, I decide to take my Ducati because today it's the last dry, sunny day of this week. Tomorrow snow will come.

I have an appointment at the Coffeeshop in the Haarlemmerstraat, and I am really scared that I am not going to resist temptation. As soon as I arrive the sweet smell of weed penetrates my nose, and my soul. My appointment rolls 3 joints in 30 minutes, but I don't even blink. After 15 minutes I walk outside and smoke a cigarette. Now everybody start asking me why I am not smoking joints, so I have to let the news go public. LOL

After the Coffeeshop I go to the office. There nobody knows yet, and this makes it easier on me. I smoke 2 cigarettes in 20 minutes, then dive into my work: writing articles for the new issue of Canamo Magazine, and helping the designers produce new banners for Powder Feeding.

It's now past 15:00 and I am doing a lot better than yesterday. Hopefully tonight will be also a little easier than last night....

Tomorrow I'll let you know.

And now let's talk money: who wants to bet on how long I am going to last? Who's gonna be the official "bookie"?

Can I bet 10 Euros on myself for a 7-days-clean strike? How are the quotes?

LOOOOOOOOOOOOL

Respect Franco! I had to quit only once for 3 days in 17 years and i started getting myself drunk in that 3 days because of the sleep problem. Never tried it again.

My bet is that you make it untill tommorow in the evening for 10 euros. \

Good luck man!

Hello guys, hello Franco.

But, for my personal experience, taht i have had much more problems to stop taking much more medicines for pain and sleep, after my motorcycle accidents in1997 and 2001, i think that remain abstinent from something is hard!

I smoke cannabis from 1991, and i smoke every day from one years ago, but i didn't have abstinents symptoms without smoking cannabis for a long times. But this, maybe because i have tryed the abstinence from drugs wich are ugly, with physical and psychological simptoms...i don't know! But i think trhat it's mostly a psychological problem, and you know that sometimes the mind plays trics on me! I smoke also cigarettes every day, and if i don't smoke during the day, especially after meals, i am go crazy!! My mother, if does not drink good wine at the table, she don't eat.

I conclude, for my own experience, start all from our head! If we fix that we are evil then we will be really bad if we don't smoke cannabis.... ;-)

Hello guys..........see you soon.

Simon.

P.S. For me Franco, you dont stop smoking alone!!! ;-) Hello Franco, 10 euro for you! :-( ahahaha......Ciao!

Hey Franco! You'll make it :) I do the same "experiment" as well, because i really LOVE the kick, when you smoke the first joint again after some days/weeks. I wish you good luck with your abstinence ;)

--->..and NO cannabis is NOT addictive - it is the combination with tobacco! this is no joke. if you are more interested in this theme, ask me :P it is a proven fact.

respect franco, i bet 20 euros that you can do it! you're a jedi ! :D

i been smoking , 1 or 2 joints a day, the only way i could accomplish this is giving all the weed to my dad, and he rations me every day. maybe you could do this with someone you trust in the future :)

this way the respiratory system works clean and safe, and i have mental energy to work and things like that. but to be honest , yes i miss it too :) the love for cannabis is very strong.

good luck franco! with regards!

DAY 3 - This morning I woke up more relaxed than yesterday. Went to the coffeeshop to see a couple of people, and that's really the hard part. When I walk into the Green House the sweet, pungent smell of weed and hash makes me go crazy for a few minutes.... but I resist once more. I am starting to manage the situation.

Now I am @ office, sober as I have not been in a long time. It's weird, being sober can be trippy sometimes LOL!

I notice that I have more energy than normal, but I am also more easily irritated by stupid little things.

Outside it's snowing HARD, damn.... no Ducati for a few days....

Hy Franco. But in the past time, when do you started to smoke grass in the morning?

So, Fuzzy, is true your comment about. But if i smoke in the morning I can not get more 'to go to work! :-)

But this also depends on the type of work that is done, and what kind of grass do you smoke. In this days i am smoking only Hash Morocco or The Church, and when smoke in the evening after dinner, at home, i must go on the couch, KO

But maybe 'because I'm not used like you.

What is the strain that don't takes your head, but makes you more active?

Simon.

DAY 5 - ....and still going strong. Thanks for all the support guys, it means a lot to me.

My nights have been a disaster lately (an average of 4-5 hours of sleep per night) but apart from that I am doing good. During the day I am much more relaxed compared to the first 3 days, and the only bad thing is that I am smoking way too many cigarettes (I jumped from 10 a day to 15-20 a day), but I guess that's something to be expected.

Keeping busy is the best trick...

Now there's the so-called "self-confidence trap" looming over me: knowing that I was able to stop, and that I am able to continue, it gets harder to find motivation.

But I want to reach the 7 days, at least, before thinking what to do.

DAY 7 - The weekend was REALLY hard.... not smoking on a saturday night? almost unbearable. But I am proud to announce that I made it. Today it's DAY 7!!!! Now the physical side gets easier and easier, but mentally it's still a challenge. Now I established that I can continue. But for how long? It's going to be IMPOSSIBLE to avoid smoking in Barcelona at the Spannabis Expo...

About us

Strain Hunters is a series of documentaries aimed at informing the general public about the quest for the preservation of the cannabis plant in the form of particularly vulnerable landraces originating in the poorest areas of the planet.

Cannabis, one of the most ancient plants known to man, used in every civilisation all over the world for medicinal and recreational purposes, is facing a very real threat of extinction. One day these plants could be helpful in developing better medications for the sick and the suffering. We feel it is our duty to preserve as many cannabis landraces in our genetic database, and by breeding them into other well-studied medicinal strains for the sole purpose of scientific research.
