I am glad to be back  with some really nice content for all of you!!

As you must have noticed already the Hunters have been back on the road lately with the Vice team, and they have had a tough and long road in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa !!

So i have been trying to collect as much infos as possible for you about the trip, it was of course impossible for us to do a Live Thread this time for security reasons, but Franco wrote for you a nice summary of the Expedition and some photos From Jackson and Gil the two photographs of the team, and Simon. I edited a small video as well for you guys to see a little bit how congo is looking! You will not see the fields this time as we reserve them for the movie and to keep the full surprise! But Franco as always did a great job filming all his moves and it gives you the opportunity to have a small preview of whats to come!

STRAIN HUNTERS CONGO EXPEDITION 2016 - Teaser article

Almost 3 years went by since our last expedition in Colombia, and it was with great pleasure that Arjan, Simon and myself boarded a flight from Brussels to Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, on a cold morning last February. 

Strain hunting is not easy, especially when it has to be filmed and documented professionally. After the Colombia expedition, the first of our travels produced by the world-famous documentary channel Vice, we immediately started working hard on selecting destinations for the next adventure. Nevertheless we were struggling to get the type of good links on the ground that are needed for such missions. After many unsuccessful attempts at several destinations, finally a really good opportunity popped out, concerning the DRC: a friend of Simon, who wishes to stay anonymous, offered the possibility to work closely with Congolese local authorities, to obtain an authorisation to film rural areas in the vast African country. After months of preparation, by the summer of 2015 it became clear that the expedition to Congo was really possible. Thanks to the cooperation of the Congolese Minister of Communications, Media and Culture we got authorisation  to film a documentary on the rural communities of Congo and their main medicinal plant: cannabis.  All of this with the support of the local police and the army. In the history of Strain Hunters it was the first time we ever obtained an official authorisation, and we were all very excited about it. Preparation for our mission started full scale: travel documents and visas, vaccinations, equipment, gathering of maps and GPS equipment, and all the other necessary preparations. Like in Colombia, also for Congo we had the privilege of having the production done by Jackson Fager and his Vice team, one of the most professional documentary maker and cameraman out there. 

Jackson selected for the mission cameraman and drone-pilot Chris—, and sound-man Ramsay —, two very skilled professionals, and great travel companions. We were also able to connect with Christo, a Rastafarian from Belgium who lived in Congo many years and speaks the local N’gala language fluently, and agreed to guide us during the expedition, together with local friends Kabo, a French-Congolese local fixer; and Kaza, a local Rastafarian involved with the local FERACO (Federation of Congolese Rastafarians, recognised by the government and with over 60000 registered members). Simon, Christo, Kabo and Kaza met in Congo already a couple of months before the mission, and scouted the areas we were interested in, looking for links and for cannabis fields.

So we go back to that cold Brussel morning, when the group of 7 hunters met at the airport and boarded a flight to Kinshasa, where Simon, Kabo and Kaza were already waiting for our arrival.

As we landed it became immediately clear that our contacts were at the top level, because we were picked up at the airplane door by military escort and driven directly into the presidential lounge. There we had some drinks, waiting for customs formalities to be taken care of, and I was even allowed to smoke a quick spliff right outside, on the airport tarmac, looking at the planes parked. It felt unreal, and it was the first sign that Congo is a cannabis-friendly country. The very sad colonial history of the country, dominated by the Belgians for over two centuries until 1965, is not to be overlooked when trying to understand the Congolese position on cannabis. Officially cannabis is illegal in Congo, but the only laws forbidding it are old colonial laws, never really applied since the independence. Congolese have a great Rastafarian cultural tradition and they use cannabis since ancient times as a medicine, religious and recreational aid. It is one of the African countries with the highest cannabis use between the population, especially in rural areas where medicines are rarely available. 

Congo has been thorn apart by a long civil war, started during the 1960s and never really resolved until very recent times. Over 30 years of internal conflict, fuelled by Russia and the USA during cold war years and later on by the race for the local abundant mineral resources, has left the country with very little infrastructure. The main roads are in bad conditions, and distances are immense. The Congo river, one of the largest in the world, functions as the main highway from the capital Kinshasa all the way to the equatorial province, with canoes, boats and barges navigating restlessly the over 2000 kilometres of calm, murky waters.In the central and southern parts of the country the monetary activity is dominant, with mines extracting all kind of rare minerals and precious stones. 

We had a very detailed travel plan in mind, covering the three main areas where cannabis is produced in the country: the area of Bacongo, between the capital Kinshasa and the Angolan border; the northern area of the Equatorial Province, around the city of Kisangani; and the area around Mbuji Mayi, in the mining district in the middle of the country.

We spent the first 2 days in Kinshasa, visiting Feraco headquarters and gathering information on the local landraces of cannabis, the world famous Congolese Red and Congolese Black. Then, the real adventure begun. 

It was three weeks of travels, emotions, and great findings, through one of the most amazing countries I’ve ever visited in my life. 

It’s hard to describe Congo, everything is extreme there. Nature is on steroids; the jungle is lush and impenetrable; the sun is hotter and more intense than anywhere else because it’s at the equator; the rain falls so hard that no protection can keep you dry; the people can be the kindest and most hospitable or the most aggressive and hard to deal with, according to the circumstances. And the cannabis… the cannabis of Congo is truly amazing. It’s one of the oldest and purest African landraces. Cannabis was introduced to Northern Africa from Asia, with the silk-road, and then was brought south into the African continent with the Bantu migration, spanning over 1000 years from 1500 to 500 B.C. Congo is one of the places in Africa where the local landrace stayed very isolated for hundreds of years, maybe more. The combination of several factors ensures this precious situation: decades of war made the country virtually unaccessible to tourists and travellers, avoiding the “hippie trail phenomenon” typical of other areas. Congolese people have always consumed cannabis in large amounts, requiring a steady local production. And finally, Congolese produce enough for their own internal consumption, avoiding importing cannabis from other places, thus preserving the landrace. 

The Congolese landrace in both its expressions of “red” and “black” is a very tall, lanky sativa, with a very high THC and THCV content and very low in CBD and CBN. It has a very minty, fresh flavour and a giggly strong high, very creative and inspiring, almost energising. 

The mission was a complete success, we were able to retrieve large amounts of local seeds from selected individuals in the fields, in 3 different regions of Congo. And we made what I believe it’s going to be the most exciting and interesting documentary ever, thanks to the competence, passion and talent of Jackson and his team at Vice. 

Stay tuned, HBO will broadcast it between September 2016 and March 2017, part of the “Vice on HBO show”. After that it will be online on youtube.

The hunt goes on. I’m already thinking about the next one.

Greetings family, here we are again with all our pleasure to tell you every day of this new adventure, for me, the first thing I want to do is to thank you for your confidence in my work and to be with you is this new trip.

This is my third expedition as a photographer of Strain Hunters and I hope to show you more information than ever, because experience is so difficult to acquire and now I have some.

This time we go to a small country in southern Africa, Swaziland!

We have a long plane ride to go, almost eleven hours from Amsterdam to Johannesburg, I have to come to the Netherlands a few days before to work with the team in the office and prepare the logistics of the trip.

Last night came the other camera team, this time there are some changes in equipment and new colleagues, I will introduce them with time, but from the beginning we understood very well. We went early to bed to rest and get some energy, we had to wake up early.

At six o'clock the alarm goes off and we are on the way to the airport, as always it is a mess... items of luggage, suitcases, computers, cameras ... we must be careful not to damage the delicate material. After waiting our turn we finally boarded and began our long journey.

Most of them fall asleep after a few hours, it costs me a lot, so I dedicate myself to take some photos and short videos of the team. Through the window of the plane you can see a beautiful lightning storm. The first day I use compact camera that I have, as they use to give me troubles with the other camera, and do not let me take pictures but with the compact camera and putting a face like a fool I am safed. I still get warning not to take any pictures from the other passengers of the flight, just out the window. But I have enough. So it's time to see a movie on the plane and let the time run.

Finally we arrived, we have broken the ass and the rest of the body, the more anxious as Franco and I, have serious problems to withstand the urge to smoke any longer, so we went with luggage carts rushed like a race LOL! The best of all is, as usual, we had nothing to smoke, it is very dangerous and could screw up the trip by some splifts so we only have cigarettes, pff ....

Franco makes magic and before reaching the door of the taxi has contacted to two natives, do not know how, but he got a bit of grass, great! This guy has contacts up in hell and if not he does them in two seconds.

We go directly to the hotel, some beers, a couple of joints and rest, we still have far to go, but for now we will overnight here. I hope that tomorrow you follow us on our adventure, let’s start the party!

Saludos familia, aquí estamos de nuevo con toda nuestra ilusión para contaros el día a día de esta nueva aventura, por mi parte lo primero que quería era agradecer de nuevo la confianza depositada en mi para esta maravillosa labor.

Esta es mi tercera expedición como fotógrafo de los Strain Hunters y espero poder mostraros mas contenidos que nunca, ya que de algo tiene que valer la experiencia que tanto cuesta de adquirir.

Esta vez nos vamos a un pequeño país en el sur de Africa, Swazilandia!

Nos espera un largo trayecto en avión de casi once horas desde Amsterdam a Johannesburgo, yo he llegado unos días antes a Holanda para poder trabajar con el equipo en la oficina y preparar la logística del viaje.

Ayer por la noche llegaron el resto de cámaras, esta vez hay algunos cambios en el equipo y nuevos compañeros de trabajo, ya os los presentaré con tiempo, pero desde el inicio conectamos muy bien. Nos fuimos a dormir pronto para poder descansar y madrugar con un poco de energía.

A las seis de la mañana suena el despertador y nos dirigimos hacia el aeropuerto, como siempre es un lio el tema de equipaje, maletas con ordenadores, cámaras…hay que tener cuidado con no estropear el delicado material. Después de las esperas de tuno, por fin embarcamos y empieza nuestro largo trayecto.

La mayoría se duermen al cabo de unas horas, a mi me cuesta mucho, así que me dedico a hacer algunas fotos y pequeños vídeos al resto del equipo. Por la ventana del avión se puede apreciar una preciosa tormenta eléctrica. El primer día utilizo la cámara compacta que llevo, ya que con la grande siempre me dan problemas, y no me dejan hacer fotos, con la compacta y poniendo un poco de cara de tonto pasan de ti. Aun así me advierten durante el vuelo que no haga fotos de los otros pasajeros solo por la ventana. Pero ya tengo suficientes. Así que es tiempo de ver una peli en el avión e ir haciendo tiempo.

Por fin llegamos, tenemos el culo roto y el resto del cuerpo, los mas ansiosos como Franco y yo tenemos serios problemas para aguantar las ganas de fumar ni un minuto más, así que salimos con los carritos de maletas a toda prisa como si fuera una carrera LOL! Lo mejor de todo es como es normal no llevábamos nada para fumar, pues es muy peligroso y podríamos joder la expedición por unos porros así que solo tenemos cigarros, puff….

Franco hace magia y antes de llegar a la puerta del taxi ha contactado a dos nativos, no sé ni como, y a pilado un poco de hierba, aleluya!! Este tío tiene contactos hasta en el infierno y si no los hace en dos segundos.

Nos vamos directos al hotel, unas cervecitas, un par de porros y a descansar, que todavía nos queda mucho por delante, pero por ahora haremos noche aquí. Espero que mañana nos sigáis acompañando en nuestra aventura, que empieza la fiesta!

We've been traveling, and I come to show you some pictures and conclusions. The results of our line of nutrients, POWDER FEEDING, has been very positive.

We visited several fields, outdoors, in greenhouses, indoor ... all with a perfectly healthy plants.

The aroma that filled each of the sites, was wonderful. Accompanied by a beautiful green that was reflected in the thousands of plants. Shocking!

Seven years of development, has resulted in a unique product, a simple way to bring flowers to your full potential.

I leave this first photo, do not lose sight of the thread because many more are in the oven, I hope you like them!

Hemos estado de viaje, y vengo a enseñaros algunas fotos y conclusiones. Los resultados de nuestra linea de nutrientes, POWDER FEEDING, ha sido muy positivo.

Hemos visitado varios campos de cultivo, en exterior, en invernaderos, interiores...todos ellos con unas plantas con perfecta salud.

El aroma que inundaba cada uno de los lugares, era maravilloso. Acompañado de un hermoso verde que se reflejaba en los miles de plantas. Sorprendente!

Siete años de desarrollo, han dado como resultado un producto único, que de un modo sencillo llevara tus flores al máximo potencial.

I am happy to share with you this small little 15mn video i edited lately, A brand new Strainhunters High report to keep you waiting until the Congo expedition!

We have had the chance to travel with Mr.X and Franco to a great place where a lot of our strains were grown from seed, and we were granted permission to documentate it, So in this small doc you will find some nice descriptions of the Super Lemon Haze, Kaia Kush, Gh CHeese and AMS. I love the part about the AMS a great piece of history for the cannabis enthusiast, and the sight of all this plants is just amazing believe me!

DAY 1

Here we go again!

We board a flight from Amsterdam and in 9 hours we are in the Caribbean. After a layover of just a couple of hours on Curacao, we fly on to Jamaica. We land in Kingston around 11 am local time. The air is hot, but not too humid.

We have a 3 hours layover, so we decide to get out of the airport and go have lunch in Port Royal, half an hour away on the coast. It's a bit of a ghost-town, once a very rich merchant harbor, destroyed at the end of the seventeenth century by a powerful earthquake. It looks like it never really recovered…

We eat lunch in a small fish-restaurant, famous for its snapper. But I eat jerk chicken because I am picky with my fish, and the jerk-spices here are amazing!

Of course we drink some Red Stripe beers, and Simon and myself decide it's time to find some weed. It does not take long before we hit the jackpot: literally on the side of the local Police station, along the seaside, there are some barracks and shacks; inside a group of Rastas is busy cleaning and chopping weed and rolling it up in small balls, using rolling papers as containers.

We ask if we can buy some, and the guys are thrilled. It's cheap, less than 1 Euro per gram. But it's a bit bitter, very leafy, and we enjoy it just because it's been a while since we smoked in Amsterdam! Some of the Rastas in the back are smoking crack cocaine in a glass pipe, the smell is terribly sour. They ask if we like some, and we politely tell them we are just here for the ganja; they nod, and scream "Jah Rastafari"!

We sit and smoke a joint with them, and chat a bit about the local weed, and the cops. It's incredible that this is all happening next to the Police station.

We leave as soon as the joint is over, and we go back to the restaurant to join the rest of the crew.

It's time to get back to the airport and catch a Jamaican Airlines flight to Montego Bay, where our local contacts are waiting. The flight is really short, under half hour, and we arrive in MoBay before sunset. Bigga, Shanti, Nampo and Taleban are waiting for us and it's great to see them again; Arjan and myself spent some crazy days with these guys not long ago, during our scouting trips on the island.

These guys are a tight crew, and they are going to take care of us during the next days of this filming trip.

Nampo is a older Rasta, wise man, with lots of contacts and very respected.

Taleban, his friend, is a grower and a smuggler, a real pirate and one of the funniest guys we ever had with us during our expeditions.

Bigga is our driver/bodyguard, he's a man of the road and he knows who and what you need to know to keep us safe.

Shanti is a local singer, a reggae artist with an amazing talent and a great personality. I know him since he was 10 years old, back in 1994, when I spent a few weeks near where he lived with his father (the man supplying me with fine herb at the time). It was really special to find Shanti during our scouting trips back in July, he's now a grown up man… and I am getting old! Shanti will come along and make sure the soundtrack of our travels is inspiring and inspired.

We get the cars, two Toyota Fortuner, and we load up the mountain of gear we are carrying. Then we drive down to Negril in the sunset light, and when we arrive it's already dark. We decide to spend the first night at the Blue Cave Castle, a really cozy place on the rocky cliffs of Negril.

It's another true 1994-flashback for me, this is one of the places where I stayed when I was a 20-years-old ganja-traveler, already a Strain Hunter without knowing it…. Of course to make the flashback even more intense the same room where I slept then is available, so I take it.

It still looks the same.

We are tired from the long travel, and we decide to go for some food. Unfortunately the chef is sick, so we decide to find something not too far away. We hit a jerk-chicken stand by the side of the road and we eat like there's no tomorrow.

After a few Red Stripes and a few joints we go back to the hotel, where we smoke some good amount of high-grade weed, and some "gum", the local finger-hash.

The weed is definitely an indica-cross, it tastes sweet and strong, and they say it's from a site not too far from where we are. We make a plan for tomorrow, and we go to sleep. Jamaica is great. It's a true privilege to be here again.

VICE joins Arjan and his crew of strain hunters in Colombia to look for three of the country's rarest types of weed, strains that have remained genetically pure for decades. In grower's terms, these are called "landraces." We trudge up mountains and crisscross military checkpoints in the country's still-violent south, and then head north to the breathtaking Caribbean coast. As the dominoes of criminalization fall throughout the world, Arjan is positioned to be at the forefront of the legitimate international seed trade.

Day 1

It's hard to describe the feelings: another Strain Hunters adventure begins today, a very special one. For the first time, we are going live from the trip, directly on the forums.

I have been preparing this trip for months, but I still can't say I feel completely ready. There is always an element of uncertainty in the air, it's a tricky mission….

Arjan and myself have been waiting for Simon to arrive from Africa, and also for Mister-X, our new brave photographer that follow us for the first time, documenting the trip with lots of images.

After spending few hours at the office doing the final checks on the equipment and the luggage, we finally get a taxi and head to the airport. The sky is grey and low.

Few joints before checking in, then we catch a short flight to another European capital, to meet the three guys from our film-crew. The group is now 7 large. We are all very excited, and we spend the night in a hotel near the airport, eating, drinking, smoking and talking about the travels ahead.

There is a very charged atmosphere. The weed, brought to us by a local friend, burns sweet and musky. It's good Cheese.

We go to bed but we hardly can get some sleep.

As every year, Green House Seeds Spannabis attend the 2014!!

As some of you might have seen, it seems this year the team as decided to try to give another chance to last years entries, the Flowerbomb Kush and the Lemon Crystal will try to get another cup, and instead of the Sharkberry cream from last year is the Chemdog Hash, this sounds like a powerfull hash to smoke

The city is beautiful, people are awesome, and the vibe is great. Arjan is signing posters, and I am chatting with growers and streaming the live thread.

We have a good crew on the stand, seeds are flying out of the boxes, and people love our merchandise. It's busier than it was in Vienna a month ago.

Will post pics when I get back to NL next week. Now I just got my iPad with me and it's too much work... LoL
