The power point presentation was for sure better quality than the video. I already knew many of these things Franco where talking about, but it was a very nice refresh and sometimes reminder about some particular stuff Franco where talking about. I will for sure look back on this video if there will be any questions that i have to find an answer to about this subject.

As usual, Franco is a role model. Love to that man!

shades_smile.gifFEMALE SEED 101shades_smile.gif

Female marijuana seeds have been created to satisfy the need to have only female plants out of the seeds. So we are lead to believe that when we buy a female packet of seeds that in theory they should all be female however no one can guarantee nature and here I will try to explain why you can’t be guaranteed to get 100% feminized seeds. You will find that feminized seeds most times are more expensive than regular seeds and this is because “regular” cannabis seeds can generate both male and female plants, in various proportions. It’s abit of a gamble as there is no way to pre-determine the sex of the plant by looking at a seed.
The male Marijuana plants produce pollen which pollinates the flowers of the female Marijuana plant, which once pollinated, produce seeds. If the female Marijuana plant isn’t pollinated (if there are no male Marijuana plants nearby producing pollen), the flower/buds continue to develop and produce THC. Female Marijuana plants which are not pollinated are referred to as sinsemilla (without seeds). Because THC production drops off once pollination occurs, the male plants (which produce little THC themselves) are eliminated before they shed pollen to prevent pollination.
The X and Y chromosomes naturally determine the sex of a plant. Male plants carry xy chromosomes while a seed with xx chromosomes will become a female plant. To produce seeds carrying only xx chromosomes a selected female plant is forced by hormone to produce male flowers. The pollen from these flowers contain only x chromosomes. When this pollen is introduced to another female plant, this plant will produce 100% female seeds.
From literature it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. For growers who are well experienced, percentage of female plants is 60% – 90% female, but less experienced growers can end up with 100% male plants. The environmental factors that, according to literature, influence gender are:
- a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females (at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks).
- a higher potassium concentration will give more males (at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks).
- a higher humidity will give more females (at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks).
- a lower temperature will give more females (at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks).
- more blue light will give more females (at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks).
- Fewer hours of light will give more females (at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks).
- In later stage, as you increase the light, the plants grow faster and show more females/less males. Sixteen hours of light per day seems to be the best combination, beyond this makes little or no appreciable difference in the plant quality.
- Another idea is to interrupt the night cycle with about one hour of light. This gives you more females.
- Spray dilute Fish Emulsion ( 1 tablespoon per gallon ). When the plants have three sets of true leaves, plus the top sprout, give them a wetting spray of Fish Emulsion. Do it once a day for three of four days. Top and bottom of the leaves.
- To achieve 100% female plants is to expose young seedlings for several hours to an atmosphere of Carbon Monoxide. It doesn’t hurt the plants, but it could kill you.
- Treatment of hempseed with ethylene gas will increase the resulting number of female plants by about 50%. Ethylene is produced by certain plants (i.e., bananas, cucumbers and melons), and these can be used to treat hempseed in a simple manner. About two weeks before you plan to sprout the seeds, place them in a paper bag or envelope and put that in a plastic bag with the peels of a ripening banana or cucumber. Replace the peels after a couple of days, and change the bags to prevent mold.
- When hempseed is treated with the female hormone estrogen, percentage of females that are produced will increase by about 10%. Dissolve a birth control pill in water and soak the seeds overnight in the solution. After the initial soaking, continue to treat the seeds by sprouting them on a paper towel soaked in the solution.
Hopefully this information will help you to fully understand the difference between male and female seeds and to also help you to understand that seedbanks can’t guarantee 100% Feminized Marijuana Seeds.

my friend dfwi,

Your writing needs to be cleaned up a bit, mate.

females seeds are genetically female, as only female genes are involved,

this is usuall done by taking the pollen from one hermaphrodite plant which then has has been used to pollinate another female - hence female seeds.

there is no way to know sex from a seed, but with normal seeds, the ratio between male and female plants

has been altered due to selective inbreeding and the use of hermaphrodite plants

so that the ratio usually comes out at around 6 to 8 females per 10 normal seeds,

and not what one would expect - 50/50.

from seed one would be very unlucky to get 100% male plants,

and the probability of this happening is so small such a statement is ridiculous.

and to get totally male plants from female seed is impossible - genetically.

happy writing,

if you want some tips on writing send me a message mate.

i have a honors degree in English and philosophy, and did post grad work in philosophy

at Sydney Uni, some years ago.

I am also a published writer - poetry and some prose.

John I'm impressed by your schooling i too did 3yrs of a 4yr degree in horticulture at Monash Uni. By your own admission and definition of how a female seed is created you have only validated my point by using the word HERMAPHRODITE which if i"m not mistaken is both male and female??? Un-less you pull the DNA strand apart and remove all Y chromosomes you can not guarantee 100% female seed. And this is the only point i am trying to make, I never said you can pick females from seed and it is fact that a poorly maintained garden and young seedlings under strees can produce almost 100% male.You only need to go threw a few posts here to see a male plant growing next to a pack of Female seeds. I'm in no way having a go at Franco or Greenhouse........... PS you put 2 has's in 3rd paragraphshades_smile.gif

I am dyslexic;

all female seed by definition is female, and is so genetically!

A hermaphrodite, which shows male pollen sacks, is genetically female;

how can be be otherwise; all the genes are female.

the 10 chromosomes pairs all have X genes;

if only female genes are involved, then it is nonsense to talk about males

hermaphrodite plants, that are producing pollen are not males

oh, and incidentally, horticulture has nothing do with good writing and the skill involved,

your writing needs to be clearer and less jumbled.

I finished my degree,(BA hons) and then went on to study at phd level.

This is the point John all the Chromosomes carn't be all 100% female un-lees you deconstruct the DNA strand and remove all the Y chromosomes it can be done and has been done in the fruit and vegie industry

An hermaphrodite, or hermie, is a plant of one sex that develops the sexual organs of the other sex. Most commonly, a flowering female Marijuana plant will develop staminate flowers, though the reverse is also true. Primarily male hermaphrodites are not as well recognized only because few growers let their males reach a point of flowering where the pistillate would be expressed. There is no way in the world you can ever convince me that the millions of air-born pollen flying around from a hermaphrodite plant is 100% X chromosomes impossible' The only point i am trying to make here John is no one can guarante 100% female seed they can get cloe to but not 100%shades_smile.gif and you are so right, horticulture doesn't have a thing do with good writing and the skill involved, but it does have a-lot to do with plant botanyshades_smile.gif

Franco would love to here your thoughts on the matter when you have timeshades_smile.gif

with the writing, I was offering you a hand.

i am not a botanist, but C. Clarke is, and that book was written as an honors thesis.your are posting some great stuff, but a lot of it is unreadable, and that means readers get confused and do not read it.john

check out Marijuana Botony, mate.

with the writing, I was offering you a hand.

i am not a botanist, but C. Clarke is,

and that book was written as an honors thesis.

i have never got a hermi from green House female seeds;

stress can cause these seeds to turn, as it will do with normal seed;

how do you think it all got started

the weed is not a true dioecious plant but a genetic hermaphrodite

and has a genetic determinacy towards it in nature;

Thai strains for example.

a female plant can produce pollen but its genes are all x. no y.

and this pollen is viable and will produce seed.

a hermie which displays female flowers, but produces prodominately male pollen sacks can NOT bear seed.

there is the difference!

hermaphrodites are female plants, genetically,

and to call seed female that is not is a misrepresentation.

your are posting some great stuff, but a lot of it is unreadable, and that means readers get confused and do not read it.

Franco is too busy producing great female seed. and the best strains in the world, to be worried about armchair botanists.

ok John lets just agree to dis-agree. I will take you for who your are and move on but i would like you to explain this post one day. I'm shore you will put it down to stress www.strainhunters.com/portal/node/651 I am in no way having a go at Franco or Greenhouse i could have found a post on anyone of the many fourms showing male plants next to female seed packs, White Label, Pardise, Sensi just to name a few. It has happened to me and other experianced growers i no.

Now there is no need to denigrate other members "Armchair botanist" really no need for that ! if anyone here is an armchair botanist it's you my friend ! be nice teeth_smile.gif I am a farmer and grow a hell of alot more than just pot. My farm is Goverment regulated and organicly certified you probley buy my garlic at your local organic fruit shop down there in Sydney. Botany has been my life my job for 35 yrs i have studied it and have lived on this 267 acreas for almost 17yrs. I don't live in a tiny appartment in a major CBD. With the web for back up and a little 3 or 4mtr sq grow room and a few lights,............Happy growingshades_smile.gif

i was including us both in that definition.

we are not doing it Franco is prioducing the best female seed in the world

we are both armchair botanists.

You are talking post union of the pair of of the chromosomes that determine sex,

I am not; I am talking pre- union

. These chromosomes are labeled. either x or y

male plants have an XY pair.

female plants XX

the chromosomes carried by the female ovum can only be x;

a female and an hermaphrodite plant are both female

he pair of chromosomes that determine sex of female seed are XX

female!

You say no one can guantee female seed

Green House do.

I know Franco will agree with me,

as though you may not mean too,

the suggestion is that Green House are lying.

3 yeard study of horticulture does not a botanist makejohn

yes john so you keep saying but can you please explain to us all, the many male plants proudley displayed on the 100's of stoner fourms like the link shown growing next to a 100% female seed pack??
lightbulb.gifCome on man your the guru tell us oh wise onelightbulb.gif

I am i no way having a go at greenhouse at all, I have used there seed since the 90's they do great work as many others do. I just truley belive there is no such thing as 100% female seed and there are many who would agree as Tokage said 95% 99% possible but not 100%. lets argree to dis-agreeshades_smile.gif

You are talking post fertilization of the pair of of the chromosomes that determine sex,

I am not; I am talking pre fertilization.

. These chromosomes are labeled. either x or y

male plants have an XY pair.

female plants XX

the chromosomes carried by the female ovum can only be x;

a female and an hermaphrodite plant are both female, even though the hermaphrodite is showing male sexual organs

it is these pair of chromosomes that determine sex.

Cannabis is a diploid - its chromosomes come in pairs

the weed has 10 pairs of chromosomes(n=10)

when the female is fertilized by the make ot another female

(who is producing pollen,

and remember a female can produce viable pollen ( but this pollen contains only x, or female genes, as to be the male xy gene has to be inherited .

each parent contributes one set of chromosome (n=10)

then if a female is pollinated by another female, the the offspring(as each parent contributes one set of chromosomes) will be XX

FEMALE!

or female seed ( XX)

I can not make it clearer than that.

with female seed, where a male is talked about because it has shed pollen,

IS NOT A MALE BUT A FEMALE!

You say no one can guantee female seed

Green House do.

3 years study of horticulture does not a botanist make

now I am sick of this BULLSHIT!

About us

Strain Hunters is a series of documentaries aimed at informing the general public about the quest for the preservation of the cannabis plant in the form of particularly vulnerable landraces originating in the poorest areas of the planet.

Cannabis, one of the most ancient plants known to man, used in every civilisation all over the world for medicinal and recreational purposes, is facing a very real threat of extinction. One day these plants could be helpful in developing better medications for the sick and the suffering. We feel it is our duty to preserve as many cannabis landraces in our genetic database, and by breeding them into other well-studied medicinal strains for the sole purpose of scientific research.
