grow room design - problems and solutions

6 posts in this topic

hi,

One of the problems which is endemic to indoor growing is the problem of heat and how to deal with it.

This is especially the case who those who live in the warmer parts of the world.

those who live in a cooler climate still have to deal with heat,

but here the problem is not how to get rid of it, but how to conserve heat.

I live in a warmer climate, and in summer the outside temperature can soar to over 40 degrees centigrade.

I like also to give the plants a lot of light, and where there is intense light there has to be heat,

as heat is part of the light spectrum - infrared light is heat.

My grow space is almost 3 meters by 1.5, with over 2.5 meters height.

It is a corner of a much larger room;

I have not totally enclose the space, but do have reflective white plastic surrounding the plants;

This boundary hangs loose, and allows for air flow, as it only is high enough to reflect the light to the plants,

the lower sections and the hight sections of my grow space are open to the larger room.

The idea here is that the heat will be dispersed throughout a larger volume of air, and therefore, will be easier to deal with.

My lighting is 2,800 watts, all are sunpulse bulbs, except for one, which though it is a digital ballast, it can not run the sunpulse bulbs.

( to run the sunpulse bulbs, the ballast has to be capable of sending a pulse of energy through the globe 28,000 times per second; this is why digital ballasts produce more light per watt combared to a magnetic ballast.

A magnetic ballast sends a pulse through the bulb 60 times per second; this why the light, if run by a magnetic ballast, flickers under a digital camera.)

i have 1 by 600 watt HPS

2 by 600 watt sunpulse bulbs (3k)

I by 1000 watt sunpuse bulb(3k)

The lights are now air cooled, so I have to exhaust fans - one blowing air, from the room, through the lights and out of the room through the floor.

another larger fan, which is the main exhaust fan exhausting air outside through the roof.

Both are Can fans, and although a large room, either fan on its own could exchange air totol volume of air in the room

with 3 minutes;

with two exhaust fans, the air in the room is totally replaced by fresh cooler air from outside in around 2 minutes.

i also have as a back up, a 4500 watt air conditioner.

Even though we grow inside using technology, we find that still we have to deal with sun.

When it is 41c outside, and even at night still 25c, then I find myself still having to accept a compromise with heat

and accept a higher temperature than I would like.The temp in my room is from 28 to 30 c just over the tops of the plants - lights on;

without running my electric bill into the sky, and thereby possibly bringing attention to my electricity usage by running the Air conditioner for the dark cycle as well as the light cycle,Night time temps are not ideal and come out at around 25c.

Here is a video of my plants and my grow room, the leaves are showing the sign of too much nitrogen; these plants do not like too much of it :

happy growing, john

About us

Strain Hunters is a series of documentaries aimed at informing the general public about the quest for the preservation of the cannabis plant in the form of particularly vulnerable landraces originating in the poorest areas of the planet.

Cannabis, one of the most ancient plants known to man, used in every civilisation all over the world for medicinal and recreational purposes, is facing a very real threat of extinction. One day these plants could be helpful in developing better medications for the sick and the suffering. We feel it is our duty to preserve as many cannabis landraces in our genetic database, and by breeding them into other well-studied medicinal strains for the sole purpose of scientific research.
