What's the best soilless mix for hydros? (Francos mix )

10 posts in this topic

Hi guys i've been searching for the best mix for a soilless grow. Can anyone give me any ideas? I've grew before but always in rockwool so don't really know much about the subject. Want to try the GHSC method seen on growhd and was just wondering what medium Franco has been using in his hydro setup, any info would be great :pickeat:

cheers guys :bye:

On the GrowVideo, Franco Use Rockwool flakes i believe , like this i think: https://www.grow-in-berlin.net/steinwoll-pu-flocken-mix-80-l.html?___store=gi_sv_c_en&___from_store=gi_sv_c_de

One of our old grow guru, (flowers to the people) uses another kind of medium called Flytocel, mixed with some others things don't remember exactly, but check on the forum, he described it many times in his threads you should find it ;)

That's all i know, i'm a soil grower ^^

Good luck in your search man :D

Thanks Dust, much appreciated.

I've seen people chop up big blocks into their pots, always wondered if it would be good enough for the GHSC 3-flush/5-day drying out technique. I assume there's medium that doesn't deal with it well. I've used NFT tanks in my few grow attempts and 5 days without water would be problematic with this setup wouldn't it? This is why I have to change to soilless. Kinda feel dumb on the subject  so have been trying to expand my knowledge and we'll see how it goes

Besides the Rockwooll flakes you can use a coco perlite mix of about 50/50, lots of people use this soilless mixture and it works very good, almost the same as Soil.

Superbluehaze AKA Flowers to the People uses Fytocel mixed with perlite.

Take care

Sounds good Fuzzy, Thanks

Been giving it much thought and some clay pebble mix seemed appropriate. I will likely be with these plant 24/7 hand-watering them so i thought id go for something that doesn't require hourly feeds. If need be i'll run a drip feed but would essentially like to hand feed :prankster:

Ive not long had a spliff of OG kush and im dwelling on my posts, sorry :prankster: Yeah, perlite and coco mix seems to be a better idea for my needs. That should retain enough moisture and nutes for longer breaks between feeding shouldn't it?

When I grew in the past i've just put on an automated pump for twenty minutes on and twenty minutes off regime using NFT so please excuse me if i ask any silly questions  you guys are the growing gurus of our time, much respect :kingchris: x

I hand water my plants since the very first time I tryed to grow "the Herb" (trinidad and St. Vincent exp side effects)... :D

I follow "a rule" of 10% of total pot size at each watering/feeding, ex: in a 10L pot I will have a max 1L watering at each feeding. It gives the plant the enough amount, without giving her too much, in any case 10% or not, as long as the drainage is good with pots having drain holes at bottom it will be ok. The perlite increases the drainage of the coco for that same reason a 50/50 mix its probably the best to use so you can have a Soil-like wet and dry cycles. If you want fast control over the plants dont give them more then the 10% previously mentioned, having not too much water will make them thrive by having shorter wet-dry cycles and giving you oportunity to feeding more frequently and reach the plants needs almost everytime.

A pressured sprayer is the best to hand water plants in my opinion, it helps spread the water much better through the medium!

Take care

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply, some great info there. As i said, i havent really got much experience in pot/mix growing so this is golden info :clapping:

Thats a nice cluster of roots bozoph :spiteful:

I will likely go with the 50/50 mix and see how i get on with that, will be running the NFT as usual aswell so will have plenty to do

About us

Strain Hunters is a series of documentaries aimed at informing the general public about the quest for the preservation of the cannabis plant in the form of particularly vulnerable landraces originating in the poorest areas of the planet.

Cannabis, one of the most ancient plants known to man, used in every civilisation all over the world for medicinal and recreational purposes, is facing a very real threat of extinction. One day these plants could be helpful in developing better medications for the sick and the suffering. We feel it is our duty to preserve as many cannabis landraces in our genetic database, and by breeding them into other well-studied medicinal strains for the sole purpose of scientific research.
