Tell me your secrets about.. proper early Veg..

I am feeling a bit like a noobie atm. Been germintaing 4 proper seeds (autos) and they popped out on monday or so . opened the seed bag on thursday the week before - so far everything easy . I left them in the propagator for a fe days till I could see the second , the true leves appear. Then I put them in little pots and placed them at various spots - when sunny inside or outside the window, in the pots of the bigger plants with a 400 watt Multi spectrum lamp. around 50 centimters or so under s Preader . After that I put them in a T5 110 watt NEON lamb to make it to 18 hours. Other plants are on 12/12 . everything looked cozy till last night when I noticed some burn on the second leaves plus nothing really going on in growth .. I mean if these are 8 to 10 week finishing autos something is definitely WRONG here.

I am so para now that i just put them in daylight, I mean it is summer after all but this slow start bugs me.

I want to get me a method and a light where I can TRUST on proper early VEG, till they are strong enough to go into the flowering booth - tired of carrying seedlings around - Maybe if I reduce the T5 from 2 & 55 to the smallest lights it might help BUt I am never sure about what is the right distance and if I have different sized seedlings that might cause another problem.

I see some of you use a CFL . i had one but they pop so fast. That was an 85 Full spectrum and not much effective I guess 125 watts or 250 might be even better.

I do have a small green house, too. should I put them in there and just push outdoors on a warm/hot day or is it better to stick to one source ? I think that causes the stress ..

Don't want to lose these seedlings or waste weeks with that ultra lame Veg.

So keep the tipps coming, please..

Thanks

Okay - I just took pix from the tiny seedlings - They do not look very happy imo - hope they recover - or I start again with the seeds left over from the same strain ; but not without the proper lights..

6 day from soil, the tiny one 4 days or so .

hi amn, sorry to hear those lil babies are having problems, how often do you get them wet and how much?

For the lights i put CFL and T5 more or less at the same level personally, T5 is better if you have a bigger amount of space to cover but will do sensibly the same job. For the CFL i think indeed for a good veg you must go at least for the 200w bulbs they make a good lighting i've vegged a few under those and plants were looking perfect and compact not stretchy at all etc.. but same can be done with T5 we have a journal running at the moment with only T5 and you see how nice it is :)

Maybe the burns could have been made by some drops on the leaves while they were in the propagator, and the light made it burn a little? or it was already under T5 when burnt?

I think the burn came from a combination of the T5 being too close and the lights from the 400 watts HPS, too long uncovered/direct - no real damage been done, parked here outside since 2 days inside a green house and that seems to work better. They will recover . I also ordered a 125 6500 watt CFL, i know 200 would be better, but then it is a problem putting it inside a reflektor cause the bulbs are so heavy. BTW the parcel arrived but i think for today I leave them outside eben thou it is a cloudy bit wet day with hardly 20 degrees, but I want the next leave to appear before I add new lights, then they get 18 hours straigh at the same spot. adapting to various light sources is stressful at that stage.Thanlks for dropping by ..

  • 4 weeks later...

i start my seedlings off under the 400 and never have any issues. maybe the soil was a bit "hot" for the youngsters?

i make my own seed raising mix .. 1 parts worm castings, 2 part perlite and 2 part wood shavings from the chainsaw.. mainly because thats what i have around but you can swap the perlite for horticultural sand. and the wood shaving for small wood chips, like what youd use for a meat/fish smoker.

the reason i make my own is because it seems everytime i buy it from the shop as a premix bag its loaded with bugs also.. its free

heres a germination thread i done a while ago.. im not sure if you have to be a member of the site. When i get some spare time i might transfer it over to here
