More light or less heat?

When I started flowering my plants I had to move them into a much smaller room. As a result I had to sacrifice one of my lights. I was running 2000 watts of light but with just my 1000 watt hps I'm getting temps in the mid 80's. I feel like I'm not giving them enough light. It's only 6 plants in a soil medium but I just hate haveing light and not being able to use it. The room there in now is only like 8x8 feet wide and only 6 ft tall. I really need a new bulb tho. It's tented bad. It's a way old bulb and ballast. I had a new bulb but I broke it. My 1000 watt mh is a fairly new bulb and it's a newer ballast. I'm not sure how much my temp may rise but I almost feel like its worth it. It really feel cool in the room. It does have a window ac blowing right at the plants and a fan of course. So what do u think, more light or more less heat?

hi man, well 1000w for 6 plants if you didn't veg them too long you should still have a very nice harvest. If you have a way to make your airflow bigger and maybe a climatizer, put your 2000w :) If your temps stick around 30° you could try to add some CO2 maybe to make your plant run smoothly :)

good luck man

number of plants to light is irrelevant when growing indoors. Ita all about lumins per square foot. a 1000watt HPS is good for about 7ftX7ft according to manufacturers of the sonT bulbs. It does depend on what sort of shade you use aswell. Theres a great diagram in one of George Cervantes grow books that shows light/lumin spread for various shades, i cant remember which one now.. im guessing its his indoor cultivar book, closet grower.

i swapped to growing under 600watters now.. but when i was using 1000's i was allowing 5ftX5ft per 1000watt, with a parabolic shade. A little smaller than manufacturers recommendations but i found it grew nice tight buds.

now in that space i used a 9 pot recirc hydro system 3x3 to get a nice fast scrog style grow in and out.. but you could use 16 smaller pots... 4 bigger pots or one massive pot.. what ever you feel comfortable in using..

for me, the faster the room fills through veg stage the better.. as grow turn around is really determined by your veg cycle. Theres not much you can do to speed up the flowering, but veg can take you 1 week.. or 3 months.. depending on how many plants youre comfortable jamming into that area.

i would say the main issue youve got with that room is the height, 6ft isnt very high. the more head room you have above your light the less heat is gathered around the canopy. Youre not using cool tubes? What sort of ventilation do you have in there? Also, i wouldnt have thought having an AC blowing right onto the plants would be much good for them.

my guess would be if youve got heat issues, then youll need more ventilation.. unless ofc you can do something about the height to help draw that heat above the canopy.

I'm using 1 600w HPS for 8 plants in a 4x4 tent! If I'm not worried, now way you should even be thinking twice about it!

I keep my plants shorter so that the light covers them all easier!

Also, as far as I've learned, 90degrees and above is where the plants start to suffer.

With CO2 and the right foliar sprays, I've come to the understanding that plants can actually handle higher temps...That they're actually preferable!!

Nice post from Dust and Skunk. Typed mine, proofread it, then read theirs and saw similar responses!

Wierd to have a room wider than tall tho! Sounds like paradise for the LED grower!

Ps, alfalfa and kelp meal foliar sprays are what you need in the future! Both have properties to help alleviate heat stress!

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice. First, the ac is pointed at the plants but there is a box fan between the ac and the plants and the fan is aimed slightly up blowing on the reflector. Eventually I will get some ducting and a blower and go get a piece of glass cut for the hood. I've never needed it in the past. I've never had a heat problem before but this tiny room is boardering on a heat problem but it's actually been cooler lately. Now it's humidity that concernes me. Humidity was higher than the temp yesterday and thats with an ac sucking moisture out of the room. Room humidity was 78% but outside humidity was in the 90's. There is not much I can do about it. Welcome to Florida! The humidity usually hovers between 40-50% and temp in the low/mid 80's. It's never gotten past 92 degrees except one it got up to 104 but only for like 5 minutes. My remote hygrometer saved my ass but it only got high cause the ac shut down. I caught it immediately and the plants didn't show any signs of heat stress but it was a close call. I recommend everyone get a weather station with a remote wireless sensor for real time grow room data.
