creating new AF or semi AF strains for extreme conditions

I think the topic itself says enough. Well where would you as an amateur grower start if you liked to take on such a mission? I mentioned a bit more in the typhoon thread if anyone wonders.. The goal is your own privately developed AF strain for your specific needs, where do you start?

step one: Obtaining good AF genetics from existing seed banks

step two: cultivating those and observing which genetic traits to keep.

For example, anything with purple in it seems to be good in cold conditions. Those we pick. Yield, potency etc. all those are quite obvious and don't need much talk. But I still believe there are more subtle things about it so please if someone out there has more to bring to this thread add it. Tell about your own experiences and experiments!

I believe there is great potential in the new AF genes. Your grow can become more and more customized to fit you and your conditions. A lot of good strains that could grow and flourish outdoors in Holland for example wouldn't they produce even better buds if they flowered during high summer jun-aug, due to greater solar energy in that season as opposed to sep-oct? Could this be a possibility by adding AF genes to those strains? Or is such an endeavor bound to failure due to some biological equation that necessatates bad medicinal quality in combination with AF genes? That seemed to be an opinion a while ago. In the last years since the lowryder revolution (as I like to call it) it has radically changed though and we´re seeing an ever increaing amount of AF strains, even hazes! It's almost too good to believe. Hence I wonder what the pro's got to say on the matter.

happy breeding..

Its going to be hard no doubt. And it will take time. But it will also be a whole lot of fun along the way, especially if you have a crew that helps you out in the developing..

I know there are already genetics out there that fit our climate (typhoon, Mi5, purple jems and others..). I even believe there are decent strains that will finish flowering north of the arctic circle (in northern Scandinavia, thanks to the mild weather not Yukon or Greenland!) that would be a nice thing to experiment with and perhaps qualify you for the guiness book of world records, if there is any record for pot growing.. I don't know where the official geographical limit goes for cannabis but know we're seeing it growing at 65" Northern Latitude where the nights during jun-jul never gets darker than twilight. (sunset at around 11.15pm, and sunrise at 2 am) And further north there is the "midnight sun", 24 hrs sunlight from mid may to mid july - wonder what buds that would produce? In a greenhouse with a little climate control (frost guard) you'd no doubt get something from your try.

The ideal would be to have a strain that you could veg under 24/24 so that it could become big and strong enough before the season starts. With lowryder and similar strains thats impossible as we all know. So a semi auto strain that wouldn't flower under 24 hrs light but perhaps under 18 hrs instead sounds better. As you said "long day plant". In this way you could veg from March to May and place it outside in early june and hopefully it'll finish by the end of aug..? To which degree this is possible without compromising quality remains to investigate but I think it's worth a try from both us amateurs as well as professional breeders.

Well, just try to keep this thread going and we'll see whatever feedback we get. Breeding projects take time of course. But the underlying theory and science of genetics shouldn't take too long to learn.

do i understand you correctly if you mean stuporsonic is semi auto? In other words can you veg it in 24 hrs without it flowering? And how stable is it, many phenos? And what about the smell, taste and effect of it? Its a quite old AF strain I've heard. Funny no one seems to grow it.. sagaramatha have been spitting out autos lately.

I feel a bit reluctant about the rapid rate at which new AF strains are popping up. Dutch passion got five. Tried both snowstorm and polar light. Both decent however two of my feminized polar light turned male! (very unprofessional for "masters at work") Although I liked that, gives me some seeds to experiment with for the next season... Polar light is very similar in taste and smell to LR2, LR2 seems to be more potent though.

Cant give a proper grow report since I didn't do the whole grow myself, germinating and the veg-stage was handled by someone else and that had some bad repercussions on the yield and overall health of the plants, and two of the snowstorms were chopped or eaten by some creature

superb review.

The medicinal aspect could vary sometimes. One might get all calm and cosy while another one paranoid. Cannabis against menstrual pains is good, however its not always working according to some females.. maybe depends on tolerance or something else. If a woman is out there please share your experience! A better alternative to ibuprofen which could harm the womb according to studies. Crazy shit giving fertile women stuff that could cause infertility. Nowdays a lot of women seem to be more or less addicted to those pills.

I found something you might like over at icmag: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=173379&highlight=breeding+autoflowering

some finish guy I believe doing amazing work in the northern taiga. I believe there's a lot of experiences to share with them. A lot of useful stuff over at icmag although the forum is a bit confusing..

Those LR2 just looked amazing considering the latitude!

Every year is a bit different though. Big difference between 2003 and 2004 for example. A rainy july - which is the optimal flowering season up north - would be devastating to the crop.

Interesting development going on. No one would dream about growing quality crops outdoors up here 15 yrs ago. Now, with the wast wilderness available we can expect an explosion in guerilla growing. God save us from the gangs.. instead of foreign berry pickers we might get foreign cash croppers out in the woods instead. So please shut your mouth and stay low key wink_smile.gif

Ditch the dealer once and for all!

here's some beneficial info I found at icmag forum, hope it doesn't piss them off that I present their material here. In the end, we're one community and no one should be out there trying to monopolize information. Or should we adhere to copyright principles? Anyway, a forum is open for all, so here it comes:

"All you need to do is to take a look at the genetical make up of your plants.(seeds)

*Whereas "a" = recessive autoflowering trait and "A" = dominant regular flowering trait.

aa = fully automatic flowerer

aA = intermediar flowerer (It'll start to bloom later then an Auto, but earlyer then a regular bloomer and in disregard of decreasing day length.

Aa = intermediar flowerer (same as aA but only flowers under influence of decreasing daylength.)

AA = regular photo period responding plant.

Note, only these 4 types of different genetical make up for auto or photo period responding bloomers are to be found amongst cannabis. aa,aA,Aa,AA.

aa x aa = aa,aa,aa,aa = 100% autoflowering plants that will produce 100% autoflowering offspring.

aA x aA = aa,aA,Aa,AA = 25% auto, 50% intermediar,25% regular.

Aa X Aa = AA,Aa,aA,aa = 25% regular, 50% intermediar, 25% auto.

aa X aA = aa,aA,aa,aA = 50% auto and 50% intermediar that 'll bloom in disregard of daylenght.

aa X Aa = aA,aa,aA,aa = 50% auto and 50% intermediar that 'll bloom in regard of daylenght.

aa x AA = (auto x regular) = aA,aA,aA,aA. 100% intermediair that will all bloom at aproximately the same time but in regard of daylenght.

When you know this, there will be ways to find out the genetical make up from your seed.

An aa will always be 100% autoflowering and it's offspring while crossed with an other aa will do so too.

With the Aa's and the aA seeds mixed in with the Aa's and/or AA's on a bud, it will only be possible to know what the auto seeds are after germinating them and causing them to bloom on a 24 hour light cycle.

Auto bloomers (aa and aA's) will respond by blooming in disregard of daylength.

The fastes way to make a pure auto flowering plant out of a regular one is to take their offspring and cross it numerous times back on an aa while exclusively using the automaticly blooming feno that 'll show up in f2 and beyond .

Note:Only some of their first aa's will show up in their f2 generation not in their f1!, but if you breed these back on an other aa, you'll get 100% automatic flowering plants of wich the offspring will be 100% autoflowering too.

This however, will cause much of other benevolent traits of the regular plant to disapear, and therefore does "fast" not always equal "better".

Besides, that way... you've got to keep selecting after wards for benevelent traits to maintain.

For breeding tecknical reasons it makes more sense to do it the slower way and therefore it is better to focus on the aA ones as well. (Since they are more likely to inherit some of the better aspects of the regular strain too.)

What takes longer, eventually gets better"

this is porbably the type one wants to work on for higher yields:

aA = intermediar flowerer (It'll start to bloom later then an Auto, but earlyer then a regular bloomer and in disregard of decreasing day length.

  • 2 years later...

Nice thread.... Even though it's old

I've got and F2 version of the Acapulco Gold, breed with rudy on the first generation... My F2's came out flowering early and finished in 8 weeks. In the process of growing out my F2's, I'm seeing what I thought I'd see.

The photo Acapulco Gold flowered for 11 weeks. So just with one cross, the flowering time has diminished dramatically...

As far as continuing to re-breed with the auto's again and again, that works, but you loose the photo side of the genes... A true auto needs to be worked not re-breed with rudy... Breed your photo once with rudy and work that strain till you get what your looking for.... My F2, when finished, will be called "Autopulco Gold" Sativa dom....

Glocalgrower keep this thread alive man... It's a great thread for people to learn from... +rep my man...

ripsterafn: I wish more new members were like you, Now when the World cup started and people are dying to get those 30 posts we see a lot of spam.

We see old thread almost 3 years old being visit. Usually members don´t check the date and they ask or say things that has no meaning.

But you my friend saw that the thread was old and you showed that you actually read it thru.

Hehe i write this as much a thank you(to you) and as a boot in the ass to those that needs it ;)

Welcome to the forum mate.

:hi: :hi: My hats off to you for the kind words and thanks Tokage...

Although I'm not much on posting... when I see something that's wroth commenting on, then I do... Maybe this thread will take off again? We'll just see what happens...

Love the karma around the site... You modes are doing a fantastic job...

I'm with Toka,I tip my hat to you, showing real interest and not just bangin out 30 posts.

It also show that new life can be breathed into an old thread.

There are so many really excellent threads in the forums which due to thier age and possibly the member not being active, gather dust and cobwebs, only to be discovered and brought back to life, by someone like you.

I hope we hear more of your thoughts on the subject and many others too. :D

Autopulco gold is a great name and wish you great success in you breeding program, be sure I will like to see the finished result.

Keep up the good work.

Peace

Lams

Thanks Lamsbread,

When I go to start my seed selection run on my Autopulco Gold, I'll start a new thread so all can watch the F2 selection...

As far as old threads go, I've still got a to of reading to do...lol... Love the site and the members are so polite... Awesome man!!!!
