well the common rule of growing is 18/6 for veg and 12/12 for flowering yes. but some people do use the 24h method, i don't like it personally i can't see plants growing happy all their life without having a night cycle at the beginnning but well it still produces some nice plants if you want to try it.

good luck

Give them a rest. 24 is a waste of your electricity, isn't going to be worth the carbon footprint or your $$. Like Dust said, 18/6 is great. Experiment with your times for different grows... when you creep down under 18/6 and approach 14/10 for your veg, you can sometimes bring out some dormant sativa traits in your gene pool that you may not have even knew were in there. Your equatorial sativas are used to a different photoperiod than your Kush's and such. Study your regions and the history of the genetics you are using, back to the landrace if you can.

General rule of thumb is to use 50W per square foot.

17" x 15" = 2552" = 1.77ft2

1.77ft2 x 50W = 88.5W for your foot print

Use four or five 20W Cfl or just one 86W cfl.

On  household cfl boxes they state the Actual Wattage and the equivelant incandescent wattage. eg A 21W cflis equivalent to a 100W incandescent - 21W is the actual Wattage of the bulb.

Always calculate Wattage using Actual Watts and not the equivalent incandesent Wattage.

40" is not much head room once you have included the height for the pot and the depth of the light, it does not give much room for the plant.

will you be LSTing  (low stress training)  them?

Some sort of training will be needed, unless the seeds are a short auto.

Have you thought how you might overcome possible problems with height?

Have a good grow .

LST will be nice as would scrog. ;)

Here is a link to a LST grow currently running on the forums - http://forums.strainhunters.com/topic/7773-dinafem-deep-cheese/page-2

Blackchiney's plant is nice and low, this would be nice to try.

Did you check out the scrog link earlier? As i said it has a similar foot print, height was not a problem , but the scrog would have worked if it had been. The grow was using cfl's plus 70W HPS.

When using CFL's light penetration is not the most powerful , so keeping plants short & with a level canopy really helps.

Your doing the right thing reading up on LST and other methods such as scrog, this will help you choose how you want to grow and which will be the best method with  your restricted height.

Peace

Sometimes it seems like alot to take in.

By reading other peoples grow journals, it can be a little easier to digest the information.

Often people will ask the same questions you would have asked and as you follow you will see how it progresses.

By also having your own journal other members can pop by and lend a hand or give advice when it is needed.

Be sure the forums is a great place to learn and share ;) and we be sure to follow your grow to the end.

Have a good grow & some nice reading

Peace brother
