perlite aids in root zone oxygenation through improved drainage it does not improve water holding capabilities of soil beyond providing spaces for water borne nutriens to film. low water holding capacity

vermiculite improves aeration and water holding capacity of soils and provides spaces for water borne nutrient films.

"Vermiculite possesses cation exchange properties, thus it can hold and make available to the growing plant ammonium, potassium, calcium and magnesium."

you should read first article below to get the pepsi challenge view of verm and perlite

  • in arid climates it is my option that both should be utilized particularly vermiculite
  • in more humid climes my opinion runs towards more perlite less vermiculite.

all you ever wanted to know about perlite (and vermiculite too.):

Yeah it is often better to have a little bit of it, it is not obligatory if you look some soils like canna pro i think dont have any because they nice peat and other components that help aerate.

But yeah in general it is better :)

cheers

the down side to peat is the particulate size = compaction and low pH levels. but yeah it holds moisture like a sponge. not that any of this is an issue with high turn over gardens of  Slightly acidic to neutral  pH loving vigorous plants. the high side of perl is air pockets. verm is in the middle ground. I will be using all 3 in my next medium.

"CANNA Terra Professional Plus is made up from raw materials each of the highest quality. Exclusive, high grade ingredients such as airy peat moss and different types of tree bark (as a substitute for perlite)"

Looks like pretty good soil...bunch of good info on their site too., a definite consideration!

Thanks Dust

About us

Strain Hunters is a series of documentaries aimed at informing the general public about the quest for the preservation of the cannabis plant in the form of particularly vulnerable landraces originating in the poorest areas of the planet.

Cannabis, one of the most ancient plants known to man, used in every civilisation all over the world for medicinal and recreational purposes, is facing a very real threat of extinction. One day these plants could be helpful in developing better medications for the sick and the suffering. We feel it is our duty to preserve as many cannabis landraces in our genetic database, and by breeding them into other well-studied medicinal strains for the sole purpose of scientific research.
