Marketing Greenhouse Thai

19 posts in this topic

I am currently growing two Greenhouse Thai plants. They are tall, with thin airy buds. I'm sure the buds will close up, they have been in bud for 5 weeks, and have at least 9 weeks left to go until they are finished, but it has gotten me thinking.

Back in the 70s Thai Stick was the precursor to the great weed of California. It was far better than acapulco gold, panama red, columbian gold, mexican rag weed ;) and it was a few years before the great Northern Cali Skunk, and the Hawaiian weeds. It filled the early to mid 70s market in California, and probably US wide.

With Greenhouse Thai we have a chance to go back in time, and experience a great Sativa. Though what I have found in California, a lot of the medical users are all about the Kush, and many have never exprienced real Thai, in stick form like we used to get in the 70s.

The other thing I've noticed in Cali is that anything is called Kush. It would be funny if it wasn't absurd. We have Kushs described as "Pure Sativa" or "Pure Indica" or "A 60/40 Hybrid" yada yada yada. It's gotten to the point that other than OG Kush, the term Kush has become totally meaningless.

But, it's marketing. Plain and simple.

I've mentioned my grow to the patients I normally supply, and they are excited to try it out. Yes, they are all over 50, so to them, Thai Stick means something.

As many of you know, in a few weeks we will likely enact the first legalization of marijuana in America, but I think the distribution chains are already in place through the medical market, and well, it's all about marketing.

So, here's my thought, and I want your opinion on it, should I try to recreate the original Thai Stick experience? I've read that Thai stick was soaked in opium, or covered in Hash oil, but the Thai Stick I had, back in the 70s, was just good buds wrapped around stick, in a uniform way, and that is what I'm going to try to recreate.

I plan on drying all the long branches, there are tons, and then cutting them to a uniform length, say a little shorter than the width of a bag, and supplying them rolled on sticks to the medical community. Draw them in with the packaging, keep them with the tripy high.

What do you all think? Does anyone have any experience making the stick, tying it, wrapping it?

Thanks!!!

My mate and i mowed a few yards and had the 10bucks or so to buy one or two...

All i can remember is smoking so much we whited out and was fighting over the bucket in between the bed to see who needed to throw up.....damn good times lol

Thanks everyone, I'll post pics when their done, probably end of December.

I heard some where that one reason they were wrapped was because the airy buds would dry too fast. Tying them to the stick kept them moist.

We shall see ;)

Thai sticks !

Sounds like a good idea to me Jay ,,

From a pure buisness perspective it works ,,

As you say it's all about the marketing ,,

You got 2 markets already the old ones that remember such things ,

Then your younger generation for whom these things might as well be an urban myth !

I've made them a couple of times , different methods,

Method 1,,

What we niknamed dry sticks !

It's efectivley a weed kebab packed but not to tight then bound with the hair string ,,

Method 2 ,,

make your stick up as before,,

Then brush it with oil and roll it in decent scuff untill it starts to build ,,

Repeat as many times as you like !

The once again tie with a hair string ,,

1 is good for anxiety

2 pain relief all the way

You can get bamboo skewers at almost any store, and they are exactly what the Thai Sticks I remember in the early 80's to be tied to... Only difference is that the skewers will be sharp at one end.

Since Thai plants have such long branches I was going to dry them, clean them up, and use them, but that is an interesting idea, I could cut off the sharp ends.

Thanks!

Authentic is what I'm aiming for, so I shall get the skewers and use them. BTW Salem, do they still do them in Bangkok?

Salem, I read some where that back in the 70s it was Americans that went over and set up the whole thai stick thing so that the loose thai buds wouldn't over dry on their way to the states.

I have no idea if any of it was true, but it makes sense to slow down drying, and to add weight, then not sell it for weight, but as volume (stick).

I never heard that one.... What I remember is around '81 or '82, it was all we could find in Oregon ( That, and the Afghan Hash). It was both Thai Stick, and untied Thai. It all came to an end when they busted a very large ship anchored off the Oregon / California coast line full of it! Then it was all about the Humbolt ~ Nice white popcorn buds!!! Those were the good old days!

Great post, Jay!

You started here a good discussion!

I'm a newbie. I only started smoking weed wen I started growing my own, 3 years ago. Thank God I have started this. I Love cannabis plants, they are now part of my life for ever.

Before I always looked for good polen bars and very very good ashishe to smoke...

So, I dont even know what Thai sticks was and I still try to get it right! :)

Thanks for open up this discussion!

Glocalgrower,

I harvested, some in Dec, the rest in January (19 weeks in flower!!!). Most is cured. I have about 1/2 lb after "taste testing" a few ounces worth ;)

I was going to bring some by a new collective that opened up near my house, and see what they thought. Everyone that has tried it loved it, and just the word "Thai" got their eyes glazed over.

I'll post when I figure this out. Or IF I figure this out...

About us

Strain Hunters is a series of documentaries aimed at informing the general public about the quest for the preservation of the cannabis plant in the form of particularly vulnerable landraces originating in the poorest areas of the planet.

Cannabis, one of the most ancient plants known to man, used in every civilisation all over the world for medicinal and recreational purposes, is facing a very real threat of extinction. One day these plants could be helpful in developing better medications for the sick and the suffering. We feel it is our duty to preserve as many cannabis landraces in our genetic database, and by breeding them into other well-studied medicinal strains for the sole purpose of scientific research.
