Started on 6th of May. Seeds soaked for 24h. 100% germination rate. I put autos along with some photos in paper pots to save me some work in case some didn’t sprout. I also wanted to avoid stressing the autos with transplanting. Tap roots of the autos could be seen at the bottom of the paper pots just a couple of days after they sprouted so I immediately planted them into final size jute bags (aka “poor man’s smartpots”), filled with 12-14l of the soil mix below. They’re rather deep than wide as I heard autos tend to race down.

Soil (Autos):

6L perlite

20L peat moss

10L general purpose garden subsrate

~15L light sandy forest soil high in organic content (mostly leaves and branches in various stages of decay)

Added a small amount of well fermented poultry manure.

pH measured at 6,2

Spots:

"The Slope"

Relatively high risk location but an amazing amount of sunlight.

It’s a south-east oriented hillside with a straight cut through the trees’ canopy in E->W direction which perfectly copies the sun path providing enough light even in the second half of October. The soil here is heavy with a very high clay content. The Urban Poison from last year’s grow was at this spot grown in the original soil, it was doing good but this time I wanted to put a little more effort to it and brought some lighter soil from the forest. The soil is a mixture of wood dust compost, the top layer forest soil, very high in organic matter and a couple of rotten stumps I found nearby. The wood dust was put at the bottom of the holes, it’s very light and can hold water well too, so it should provide both water and air for the deep roots as needed.

This spot has 6 holes for photos, 25-30l each.

"The Bush"

Well hidden, safe, slightly less sunlight.

Same bush I used last season, just the site was moved uphill a bit so now it catches way more sunlight (but still ~2h less than the previous one, the cost of security).  All deer paths were blocked so the place is inaccessible and invisible from the outside. Holes were filled with a local soil gathered nearby. It’s a mixture of 2 (3:1 in this order), one is a black, top layer with high organic content, the other is very sandy, light, taken from a place where the common nettle (urtica dioica) has grown and for many years so it’s very rich in N and active.

The spot has 4 holes for photos, ~25l each + 4 holes for Autos which be placed here in their bags 2/3 – 3/4 way down so that they don’t dry out but will still benefit from the airy jute bags.

"The Deer HQ"

The jackpot spot. Sun all day/year long, invisible from the outside.

Actually not exactly in the Deer HQ (as I like to call the nearby bush) but just outside of it. Still, the deer traffic here is very high and the concentration of deer is the highest I’ve ever seen. If you remember my last grow and the problems I had with deer infestation, it wasn’t even close to what we have here. This is the place from where they were leading the raids against my crop, this is where they are when you don’t see them, this is where they sleep, where they educate their children, where they retreat to when you disturb them. 10/10 times I went there I’ve encountered at least 3 pieces. Estimated at 25-30 adult deer, one wild boar family and a handful of roes, this place truly earned its nickname.

The grow site is just outside of it where the bushes aren’t so dense and high, it provides perfect cover from all sides and prevents anyone from spotting it. Both horizons can be seen from here so it gets direct sun from dusk till dawn. Digging here was very difficult as the soil started to be hard as rock some 10-15 cm below. I decided to make the holes ~40l big because the soil is not at all suitable for root growth. A jute bag was placed into each hole and filled with a good, black soil, mostly gathered from deer beds.

2 holes for photos, ~40l each with jute bags, raised-bed style.

Although I was 6 days with the start, I’ll plant out just as planned because they’re already suffering in the small pots and there’s no space for bigger in the cabinet. So going out today and/or tomorrow.

Stay tuned.

Peace,

G.

Hey guys,

back with a small update. I took everything out on 31st of May and 1st of June. It worked out perfectly because we had very cold nights (3-6°C) just like 3-4 days prior to the planting. When I was out there it was nice and warm, full moon making it easier to find my way in the dark. Since then the night temps have been stable around 13°C. I had to leave home and am not able to attend to them at the moment so I gave them a rich watering and was hoping they wouldn't dry out during the next week when the temps were in the range of 25-32°C. The soil was pretty moist when I dug the holes so I think they'll be alright and in case they started to dry out, well at least it made them roots race to the deeper levels, boosting their growth. From Monday there should be a nice rain coming their way (~ 40mm) which plays in my cards perfectly.

Some details on the placement:

"The Slope"

Bangi haze (x3), Serious Happiness, Forest Dream and Berry Bomb went here. This is the only open site so there's the highest chance of deer damage. I sprayed some dog shit tea I prepared earlier all around the place. Oh boy did I try not to get it on my hands. Oh boy did I fail. Although it's been sitting in water for some time it still pretty much smells like dog shit so let's hope this works.

"The Bush"

All autos, Green Poison FV, Big Devil FV, Serious Happiness, AMS. Damn those autos were heavy in their bags. I carried 2 per trip and it must've been like 40kg on my shoulder. Walking up the hill thinking "Dedication, Gordon, dedication." and "Why the fuck did I water them this evening?"

"The Deer HQ"

I was thinking what to put on this exclusive spot and I got 2 kinds of advices: A: Something susceptible to mold to max its chances to survive, B: Something you're sure will finish. And since I'm sometimes quite indecisive, I decided to make it a compromise and the winners are Frisian Dew for the mold-resistant part and 710 Mango for the mold-susceptible.

More pics will come with my next visit of the spots, I expect some explosive growth and let's hope not many surprises from deer, slugs and drought.

Stay tuned.

Peace,

G.

UPDATE 6/17/15 - FIRST BLOOD

Yesterday I visited the sites after 16 days. The rain I was talking about in the previous post didn't come. Actually, there was no rain at all for the whole 2 weeks until a rain (~6mm) this Monday (6/15). The temperatures were in range from 27°C to 33°C so you can imagine the suffering the poor plants had to go through. There was lots and lots of sun but the potential of it was totally wasted since ladies were drying out. They would be much bigger only if I could water them at least once in two or three days.

Bad news is that autos that need a lot of care were left completely unattended thus grew very little. The Deer God has taken a sacrifice. One plant is dying or dead.

Good news is that most of them survived this horrible period, and we still have 12 strains.

Autos already in flower. It's the 33th day of their lives. I gave them some BioBizz feed and urtica dioica/poultry manure tea yesterday.

Stay tuned,

G.

Gordon, one or more of those pictures showed signs of damage from caterpillers or slugs, not deer.  Have you seen any of those pests?  If so, I recommend using a bit of slug pellets surrounding the plants, and also spraying Neem Oil directly onto the foliage and stems, (avoiding of course the bud sites).

Your use of dog poo tea is a great idea.  I will include that in my fight against deer.

Thanks and Good Luck

UPDATE 6/30/15 - THE ROYAL DEER GARDENER

Hi guys,

two weeks passed since I last visited the sites. The weather conditions have been mellow, mostly cloudy, the max day temperatures were in the range from 18 to 22 °C, last four days 24 - 27°C. The rainfall was very poor again, only 17mm in total, with the biggest rain on 23-rd being 9mm. Things are growing mostly well but the drought is still an issue. Some hardcore watering is required and will be carried out later on today.

I'm sorry for the pics quality, insects were biting me so I was in a hurry and took just one pic per plant.

The Slope

The girls here have the slowest growth. Deer are preying on them all the time. The best progress can be seen with Forest Dream which I planted on an underground water source. Turns out we've got a professional gardener among the deer who decided to perform an experiment on some of the plants, topping Berry Bomb and Serious Happiness. We've yet to see how is his work going to turn out. I need to bring some more dog shit tea this evening.

Deer are trying to undermine my project here. Literally.

The unburnt Amnesia Kush Auto grew some balls so I had to ritually sacrifice her to the Deer God. Autos seem to have stopped all upwards growth so I gave them some flower feed today. All photos are looking great and generally grew bigger than the ones at The Slope.

@Cannabissapean: Hey bro, you're right, it's slug damage on that Serious Happiness there. I would normally put beer traps against them but since I had only 2 days and nights to prepare the sites and bring and plant everything, there was no time for this. Also I didn't expect them to eat a whole plant so it was of low priority. At this stage I think they're no danger to them as they eat quite slowly. Thanks for the tips nevertheless ;).

@all: Thanks for the support and for following my grow op.

Stay tuned.

Peace,

G.

Ants are usually no worry.  In fact they're OK.  They will keep other pests away (unless they start farming aphids on your plants, but thus far, I haven't seen that on Cannabis).  Worse would be termites.  Termites can wipe your plants out by eating them from the inside out.

Reference:  See the thread: "The Journey" here in "Outdoor Grows" (nice and interesting thread with various pests on an Island somewhere in the  Caribbean, I think.  Adventure well worth reading.)

UPDATE 07/09/15 - The Rain

(9 days since last entry)

Hey guys,

after 3 weeks of drought, finally some rain fell. There wasn't much of it (only like 5-15mm) but enough to lower the temperature and increase the air humidity a bit, refreshing the plants (they seemed really happy this morning). Nothing much changed overall, I applied some fresh hairy dog shit at The Slope, along with the shit tea. I also put a deer protection on the "topped" plants to save what's left of them, they're slowly recovering.

UPDATE 08/20/15 - Another wave of drought

Hi there,

been quiet for some time because I was on a vacation. While I was gone there was an extreme 3 week long drought with temperatures around 35°C so the plants were once again struggling to survive and couldn't put any energy to new growth. Many leaves fell of, when I came back home the plants were hanging down in 90° degree angle.

Now to the sites:

The Slope

Berry Bomb recovered quite nicely while Serious Happiness is still being eaten by deer (for some reason they don't touch the BB anymore). Forest Dream is the only plant that wasn't affected by the drought because it is growing on an underground water source, it is 2 meters tall and still not flowering.

2x Bangi Haze -> Berry Bomb -> Serious Happiness -> Forest Dream

post-35384-0-13719000-1440065484.jpg post-35384-0-51343300-1440065493.jpg post-35384-0-31985000-1440065474.jpg post-35384-0-90096600-1440065536.jpg post-35384-0-68226300-1440065526.jpg

The Bush

Fast & Vast dried out completely, the dry leaves on Think Different didn't fall of the plant and through them (at least I suppose so) botrytis entered the buds and the plant molded completely (the buds were really too dense). The photos survived and will start flowering soon. They're around 1m tall.

Frisian Dew couldn't handle all the stress and started growing balls so another sacrifice for the Deer God has been made. 710 Mango is holding up.

Heys,

everything alright here and nothing much changed from the last update. All plants have been flowering for some time now except Bangi Hazes and Forest Dream who are just starting. Those Bangis will finish around half November I think if at all, they're stretching a lot these days. It'll be an interesting test of their mold resistance. I've measured the height of all plants but 710 Mango, because it was impossible to go see her today.

Btw. we have only 8 strains now with all the casualties.

Here's the data (in cm):

BH2 - 168

BH3 - 162

BB - 109

SH1 - 123

FDr - 215

SH2 - 129

BDFV - 127

AMS - 151

GPFV - 129

@Tokage: Oh yeah, it is. The only two problems I've ever had are deer and mold.

News:

Found some mold on Forest Dream, just one bud so I removed it and will watch this plant closely in the days to come.

The Deer HQ's defenses have been breached and 710 Mango was destroyed by the deer. I found it lying on the ground, impossible to fix such injury so I cut it, only 2 tiny branches remaining.

GPFV is looking nice, buds still not filling up, will they ever? We're getting 12°C day and 2°C night temperatures within a week from now.

AMS is showing nice purple hues.

Sup fellas,

harvested all but Bangi's, gonna leave them out there to test their resistance. I cut the rest because there is supposed to be 100% cloudiness for the next ten days and the temps are low. Most of the plants didn't finish and are kind of leafy but with a good amount of resin. AMS had some mold on it, like 3 buds or something, so all in all a very good resistance (it was close to already molded GPFV which I think played some role, too). It grew nice purple buds.

Quite the surprise were Forest Dream and Berry Bomb. Forest Dream had just one molded bud in the half of September despite the warning of the breeder that it's susceptible to mold. Berry Bomb had absolutely no mold at all after 2,5 weeks of cold weather and continuous rain even tho it had really dense buds. I can definitely recommend this strain for humid areas and rough climates.

Hi guys,

thank you for the nice words. I'm gonna test GPFV today for the first time, I left it on the stems so it was drying for quite some time (+ my dry room is a bit too humid and cold).

@Tokage: Well it depends, in terms of resistance - for sure. The question is how long does the region maintain good weather once plants started flowering. Berry Bomb wasn't particularly early, it started flowering with the majority of the strains. We usually have really nice and warm summer here but the weather turns bad drastically. Up north it would start flowering earlier as the days are shorter sooner, then the question is just how long would the minimal requirements be maintained (air temp, soil temp, sun). Where I am there's just no sun anymore at all so even if the plants can bear the cold, they're more or less stuck.

What I've been looking into for the next outdoor season are semi-automatic strains, similar to GPFV (I want to get something like it because I was very satisfied with the result). So far I was considering these strains from Spliff Seeds: Fast Bud, Polm Gold, Gold Rush and Sweet 'n' Sour Outdoor. I'll discuss it with the breeders at Cannafest and then decide.

Here's one of Bangi Haze's today:

I'll be back with some smoke test results soon.

Take care.
