Green House Kush Test compared against Kaia Kush, each comparing Short Powder Feeding against Advanced Hydroponics Nutrients by Cannabissapean

It is a pleasure and an honor to have been chosen to participate in this Test/Contest.  I wish to thank Green House Seed Company and Strain Hunters for their excellent product development in the years past and I thank the Forum Members who have helped to bring this test into existence.  I also thank the Forum Members who are participating as contestants in this competition.  

 

As explained to Jose, I could not start the Germination of my seeds until a business trip was behind me.  As promised, I did begin the Germination on 07 Nov 2015.  Pictures will be posted below.

 

But first, here is my plan as originally described to Jose:

 

"OK Jose, I am definitely up for this one.

Germination shall be between layers of paper towels using distilled water.

Vegg (first 10cm) shall be under fluorescent tubes (Cool White and Grow Spectrum) in 10 x 10cm Rockwool cube, using a timed drip-feeding System and nutrients from Hydroponics - "Root Stimulator" and "1-Grow".

Vegg (after 10cm height) under same lights, the Rockwool cube installed into a large plastic planter of clay Ton-balls with a bottom layer of volcanic rock, using timed drip-feeding System and nutrients from Advanced Hydroponics - "1-Grow", "2-Bloom", "3-Micro" and "Enzymes+".

I plan to perform LST similar to my first White Widow grow, so you may see some nice fat round ladies on my thread.  Hehehe...

Flowering shall be under two 270-Watt multi-spectrum LED lamps plus two 36-Watt and two 18-Watt fluorescent tubes Cool White.  Each Assemblage (large pot containing the Rockwool/Ton-ball/Volcanic-rock) will be inserted AS-IS into an Ebb-N-Flow tub filled with larger Ton-balls, using timed Ebb-N-Flow System and nutrients from Advanced Hydroponics - "1-Grow", "2-Bloom", "3-Micro", "Enzymes+" and "Growth/Bloom Excellerator".

Finishing nutrient shall be "Final Solution" from Advanced Hydroponics.  Optional finishing lighting may include a 36-Watt UVB 2.0 fluorescent tube along with the dual 270-Watt multi-spectrum LEDs.

I would like to test the xxxxx Kush.  (Would that perhaps be the Kaia Kush?)  By the way, are these test seeds going to be feminized, or must we each be prepared to perform sexing procedures as well?

Obviously, the answers were supplied to us:  All the test seeds are feminized, and xxxxx Kush has been re-named as Green House Kush.

 

I decided to test additionally the Kaia Kush side-by-side with the Green House Kush.

 

I received my seeds from Green House Seed Company.  Lo and Behold!  Green House included a present - one kilogram of Short-Flowering Powder Feeding.

 

Because I had originally designed both my Vegg Set-up and my Flowering Set-up to be "dual-Nutrient-capable", I figured that this was an opportunity to put that capability to good use.

 

I hereby modify my Grow-Plan to include a comparison of Powder Feeding against Advanced Hydroponics.  My Test shall be a four-way comparison:

Green House Kush with Advanced Hydroponics

Green House Kush with Short-Flowering Powder Feeding

Kaia Kush with Advanced Hydroponics

Kaia Kush with Short-Flowering Powder Feeding  

 

So, I begin with some Pictures of the seeds as received from Green House.  Included in the photos are also the nutrients from Advanced Hydroponics and a photo of the Kaia Kush seeds.

Two Kaia Kush seeds and four Green House Kush seeds beginning the Germination in a folded paper towel nicely moistened with distilled water.  I use two planter saucers, one inside the other, to help keep the paper towels from drying out too quickly while the seeds decide what they want to do.  No need to scarify the seeds.

 

With my current Set-up, I cannot produce more than about 6 plants at a time.  Even that is really pushing it for space when it all goes into flowering.  Besides that, my significant other gets a bit upset when I run a plantation.  Outdoor growing is not possible during the winter, and it is NOT AT ALL an option on my back 40; we often have visitors.  So, for the time being, I am limited to these 6 plants for the purpose of this test. 

 

Caviat:  I do have 2 deer-forced clones of Bulldog Northern Light currently hitting pre-flower stage in the flower room.  And there are 3 more deer-forced clones of Northern Light still in Vegg that are very nearly ready to go to flowering.  My hope is that all 5 of these Northern Lights will be harvested before any of the Kushes enter the flower room.  The deer-forced clones are covered in another thread.

WOW!, just 20 hours and all 6 seeds are showing activity.  The GH Kush seeds seem to be exhibiting a bit more acceleration than the Kaia Kush.

 

And what's this ?!?!?   A breach-baby !!!!   One of the GH Kush has pushed out its leaves before its root. 

 

Never seen this before.

Ooh, normally I would plant these tailed seeds into Rockwool or soil just like they are, but I don't have the Rockwool cubes already prepared, and I have an appointment in 30 minutes.  I decided to let them sit one more day to the next evening.

I had to act quickly.  Intense work keeping me deeply occupied during the day and Exhaustion in the afternoon and evening kept me from being able to set my seedlings into the Rockwool at a better time.  I knew that by this time, the seeds had to have pushed out their roots a bit further than I had wished.  So after getting a little bit of sleep, I dreamed that my babies were calling me to that task, hence the Timing of this operation.  That, plus business calls me to a short out-of-towner beginning tomorrow morning and I wanted to get my Girls in their cubes and get them on Automatic Feeding while I am away...

 

I set about making the Rockwool cubes.  I don't buy Grodan cubes, rather, I make my own.  For larger cubes(~10 x 10 x 10cm), I cut them from a block of Rockwool Insulation that I had bought (~ 0,75 square meter for about 5€ at nearly any Home Improvement Center).  But for the smaller cubes, I cut them as seen here from waste Rockwool material left-over from industrial insulation projects.

 

The measuring stick is not to suggest any particular size, rather only a reference.  The size is whatever works for your purpose.  After the plant develops a few roots in these small cubes, I plan to slip them into some larger Rockwool cubes with holes that are already cut, and these should slip in without damaging the roots too badly.

 

The hole through the top is helpful for setting-in the seed, especially when it has a tap root already.  The other holes are not absolutely necessary, but they do provide the seedling easily navigable channels for the infantile roots to develop rapidly through the Rockwool.

Soaking the cubes in water.  Rockwool tends to raise the pH.  Adjusted downwards.  Since they float, I use the second pot filled with water to keep the cubes underwater.  I discovered that I can also lightly squeeze the cubes repeatedly while holding underwater to more efficiently expell the air from the cubes.

 

After the squeezing trick, I inserted them into their cups which I use to help keep them standing only in the initial seedling phase.  These cups or something similar are readily available if you buy small joghurt variety packs.  Just drill a few holes in the bottom.  I returned the loaded cups to the soaking water.

 

Next, let's get the nutrient Reservoirs filled and pH adjusted.

Reservoirs filled with rainwater and pH adjusted.  A bit surprised that the water was very resistant to downward adjustment.  I would normally try to get it down to 5.8, but I didn't feel right to keep adding any more pH-Down.

 

15 Liters in each Reservoir. 

Ran the pumps and adjusted all the drip-nozzles in preparation for 6 cubes. 

Three nozzles for the REAR grow tray supplied by- and draining into the LEFT Reservoir. 

Three nozzles for the FRONT grow tray supplied by- and draining into the RIGHT Reservoir.

Timer for lighting double-checked for 18/6.

Timer for feeding set for 3 x daily at 15 minutes each during the lights-ON time with the last daily feeding occurring 4 hours before lights OFF.

 

Everything checks out.

 

Next, setting the seedlings into the cubes...

Oops, forgot to take Pictures of the roots of the GH Kush, but they were generally longer and curlier that the Kaia Kush roots.  These are the Kaia Kushes.Image025.jpg

 

I discarded the Breach Baby seed.  I set the seedlings into their cubes, being careful to not hurt the roots.  Had to widen the holes in every cube, and then gently re-close the hole loosely around each seedling.  I replaced the Breach Baby with a GH Kush seed directly out of the package and into the cube.  I think it should do OK.  Image026.jpg

Ran and adjusted all the drippers to ensure proper volume and Drip Placement.  Next, adding the nutrients to the Reservoirs...

For the 15 Liter Advanced Hydroponics Reservoir, I added 5ml 1-Grow, 3ml 2-Bloom, 3ml 3-Micro and 5ml Root Stimulator.

For the 15 Liter GH Powderfeeding Reservoir, I added 3 grams of powder.

By the way, just for your Information, or for growers who might not have a set of scales:

According to my scales, after properly setting the tare, when the Scoop that comes with the Powder Feed is Level-Filled, it is ~13 grams of powder.Image036.jpg

I don't think it would have made it, Jan. 

24 hours after I first noticed the Breach Baby, it seemed as if there was absolutely no Progress.  I opened it to see if it even had a root, and it did not.  The two leaves simply appeared to be attached to each other, but there was no root.

 

I had, in fact, planted the breach Baby in cube GHK 4  AH, but after seeing no Progress, I decided to chuck the seed and start another seed.  I wanted to try to Keep things moving Forward for this test.  I figured that the catch-up seed, being only a few days behind, would make little difference in the comparisons.  I swapped them out so that the seed might possibly germinate and stand-up while I was away.

In this post, I had originally scanned-in the entire booklet and the Fertilizing Schema and posted them here.  But even after selecting a higher scan-Resolution, although they displayed beautifully on my PC, all the Pictures were not very legible after they had been uploaded and processed for Display in this Forum through the StrainHunters' server.  Additionally, the files sizes were so large that it simply took too long for the pictures to be displayed to the Viewer of this Forum within a reasonabnle amount of time.

 

Many thanks to Jan.GHS who, in the next following post of this thread,  posted the link to the Greenhouse Downloads Webpage.

Sorry about the poor Resolution - partly from my Scanner (600 dpi) and partly from the upload to Strain Hunters Forums.  It looked good before the upload.  I could have selected a higher Resolution, but then the file size becomes a bit large for the upload.

 

@ Mykol76, after the babies develop some good roots, these Rockwool plugs will be slipped into ~10cm x ~10cm Roockwool cubes and vegged further.  After the roots grow out of the 10 x 10 cubes, then those cubes will be set into clay ton-balls with volcanic rocks on the bottom and vegged further.  After the plant reaches an appropriate height or maturity, then the Assemblage will be transferred to the flowering room.

First LST for the seedlings that are tall enough.  I do this to force the stems to become a bit stronger, and to try to stop the Stretch of the seedling.

(GHK 4 AH is not yet up, and KK 2 AH is not yet tall enough to LST.)

All four of the LST'd seedlings are showing a good Response only a couple hours after bending.

 

So, now I check all hoses and Switches and timers, close-up the vegg room, and we'll see what happens after 7 days.
