"objective" determination of ideal harvest time

Hello friends,

I'm a beginning grower, some of u may have seen my newbie questions here a few months ago.

Still growing. I bought a cheap USB microscope. Since I'm in the last stages of the harvest, I decided to do a follow-up of "trichome ripening" using the microscope.

So I took pix every day, of the buds that seemed "most done", and then took some macro's.

Here goes... (also, I haven't found how I can get my images to show side-by-side, instead of one above the other, apologies for this)

Don't get lost looking at trichomes, feel the buds , sticky ? Smell ? aromatic. Color of pistils changing from white to darker ? Now it is coming. Count the days and compare with catalogue. Don't wait too long, either seeds appear or you got bud rot if you wait too long. Rule of thumb 1/3rd of the hairs turned darker - earliest moment to harvest, 2/3rd dark-ish, ready; depending on the strain all pistils turn color and the smell is fantastic. Then is the objective best time to harvest. Don't wait any longer.. The benefits are not worth the risks of bud rot, seed growth. imo

Bam-Bhole: I followed your advice, and stopped focusing. Today I took another few pix, because my plants told me they were "ready" :-)

And indeed, judging from the latest pics, now is the ideal harvest time.

So thanks for the advice, the combination of "just looking and smelling" + confirmation by microscope works flawless! :-)

Hope i could help you, I used a microscope too but sometimes the trichomes just don't turn amber/dark evenwhen the other factors and my senses tell me it's about time-waiting for that trichome color change took too long and I ran into problems. That is why I trust my senses more than trichome status and so far the results were good to excellent, As long as the buds get more compact and you gain weight waiting makes sense but if not I always cut when I feel like it is the right time.
