Use of hps or metal halide with seedlings

Hi guys

Could i please get  some clarification on wether  i can use my dimmable 600w lamp for the full grow ie for seedlings ?? I was planning to have it down on 250w at first using my air cooled hood. Would this be ok? Also how close to propagator Could i get it to try and avoid stretch? All help is appreciated thanks .

Yes you could use your light i guess but why dont you use some cfls or a tube light. It would be a lot better for seedlings. As you say, they can stretch with to much light.  Plus cfl or tubes is very cheap to buy or run.

Like toke said cfl or tube is ideal for seedlings, however

if you havent got one, try shaded area and get

them use to the intense light slowly

Just make sure your HID is high enough over the seedlings so as not to cause them burn, I use a desk lamp with a CFL if there are only a few seedlings

Thanks guys i kinda knew what You'd say!!Just hoping to not have to spend more brass!!! Would a cfl from hardware shop be o.k? And what type or wattage/output do i need plz help as not used them before
