Time to germinate 4 Silver Back beans and get the ball rolling for my indoor strain test grow.

Silver Back beans in package.

26june-2020-sb-beans-package.thumb.jpg.c64cecb1e40d245f8d3d568efb94f53a.jpg

I placed a folded piece of kitchen roll into a plastic food container and dripped about 20ml of water onto the kitchen roll to make it nice and damp and then I placed 4 Silver Back beans between the damp kitchen roll.

26june-2020-sb-beans-kitchen-roll.thumb.jpg.e3de7f1b5a97013f53cd2f5b62ac009a.jpg

Then I placed the lid onto the container loosely and then I placed the container into a drawer under a hand towel.

26june-2020-sb-beans-drawer.thumb.jpg.c9171e3137c801010dc90b37f9f8a67f.jpg

Now it is just a case of waiting and keeping the kitchen roll damp while the beans germinate.

Saturday 27 June 2020

This morning when I checked the Silver Back beans at 06.30am when I got up there was no change.

The beans were obviously still soaking up moisture from the kitchen roll so I placed the plastic container back in the drawer under the towel and left them to do their thing.

When I checked the beans late this afternoon about 4pm I see that 3 of the 4 beans have cracked their shell cases and their little tap roots are starting to grow out of the seed shell.

27june-2020-sb-beans-3-popped.thumb.jpg.4aba917ea95775ff8795d9aee2074e35.jpg

Hopefully the 4th bean will pop over night and I can put them into Root It sponges in the next few days and get them under the fluorescent tube in the cupboard.

Sunday 28 June 2020

This morning at 06.30am when I checked the Silver Back beans the 4th bean had cracked its shell case.

I left the beans sat between the damp kitchen roll all day and when I checked them in the late afternoon the tap root on the 4th bean has grown out of the shell case.

28june-2020-sb-germinated.thumb.jpg.cc4abd308de8c5c590802487f1667c69.jpg

By tomorrow morning the tap root on the 4th bean should be twice as long so I will put them all into Root It sponge plugs and get them under the fluorescent tube in the cupboard next to the grow tent.

Monday 29 June 2020

This morning at 06.30am when I checked the Silver Back beans the tap root of the 4th bean to crack its shell case was twice as long as it was yesterday afternoon when I last checked them.

After I had something to eat I got 4 new Root It sponge plugs and cut them down one side with a pair of scissors to make it easier to gently insert the germinated bean and its tap root into the sponge plug and allow the sponge plug to grip the tap root.

Once I have placed the germinated beans into the Root It sponge plugs I place them into their little plastic pots, then I use a 10ml syringe to damp the sponge with some water.

Then I placed the sponge plugs on a plastic saucer and put them under the fluorescent tube in the cupboard next to the grow tent.

Here are some images I took to document the process.

Now it is just a case of waiting for the Silver Backs to grow above the surface of the sponge plugs and come earth strong.

This morning at 06.30am when I checked the Silver Backs two of them had grown above the surface of the sponge plug and they were earth strong the third one was just below the surface of the sponge plug and the fourth was a few millimetres below the surface of the sponge plug.

I shared a 10ml syringe of water between the 4 sponge plugs to keep them damp and to help one of the seedlings to lose its helmet and the other to lose some membrane stuck on the cotyledon leaves.

I had something to eat and then I took some photos.

When I checked the seedlings in the late afternoon the third one had grown passed the surface of the sponge and come earth strong and the fourth had just reached the surface and she should be earth strong some time in the night.

I will just leave the fluorescent tube on until they are all up and running then I will get them on an 18/6 photoperiod as I did with the Cloud Walker girls by switching off the tube at 06.30am and switching back on at 12.30pm so they have a night time.

This morning at 06.30am when I checked on the Silver Back seedlings the fourth had grown past the surface of the sponge plug and come earth strong and it was way above the surface of the sponge.

So I shared 20ml of water between them and then I switched off the fluorescent tube and left them in the dark for the morning until 12.30pm when I switched on the fluorescent tube and started their day.

Here are some photos of the seedlings that I took at lunch time after I woke them up.

I will keep them on an 18/6 photoperiod by switching the fluorescent tube off for 6 hours in the morning until I have harvested the Cheese and the grow tent is empty they are now ending week 7 of an 8 week flowering period, so just another week after this one under the fluorescent tube then they can enjoy the LED in the tent.

Time for a progress update on the Sliver Back girls.

All of the Silver Back seedlings are growing well last night I mixed 3ml of root stimulant in 2 litres of water and then I shared 10ml between the seedlings to keep the sponge plugs damp.

For light deprevation I am covering them with an upturned 16ltr root pouch at 06.30am until 12.30pm this allow me to still access the cupboard when I need to and the seedlings get a night time.

Here are some images I took at lunch time when I woke them up to start their day.

Yesterday at 06.30am I covered the Silver Back seedlings with the 16ltr root pouch to start their night time, then 6 hours later I woke up the Silver Back seedlings at 12.30pm and then I put them into little 4 inch plastic pots.

Here are some images I took to document the process.

Once I had potted the Silver Back seedlings in the 4 inch plastic pots I gave each seedling about 50ml of the water and root stimulant solution it should take a few days for the dirt to dry out.

Now the seedlings are in their 4 inch pots I can't use the 16ltr root pouch to cover them it is too small for the job, so I now use a cardboard box that I place over them at 6.30am to start their night time period of darkness and I remove it at 12.30pm 6 hours later to wake them up and start their day.

The Exodus and Green House Cheese plants in the grow tent are now in their 8th week of flowering so I will only have to keep the Silver Back babies in the cupboard for another week then once I harvest the Cheese they can go into the grow tent.

More updates to follow soon, happy growing... :pleasantry:

Since I put the Silver Back seedlings into the four inch plastic pots they seem to be enjoying the dirt and the root stimulant I gave them the dirt is still damp and will probably take a few more days to dry enough to give them another drink.

The dirt is slowly starting to dry out so they will need a drink in the next couple of days.

They can go into the grow tent at some time next week and enjoy some better quality light from the LED once I harvest the Cheese.

All 4 young plants are nice and healthy and growing well under the fluorescent tube, hopefully they will be able to go under the LED in the next few days as soon as I harvest the Cheese plants.

I am thinking about giving them a mild feed next time they are ready for a drink.

Time for a weekly update on the Silver Back girls.

All the plants are growing well when I woke them up at 12.30pm today the dirt in the plastic pots of 2 plants was dry so I mixed 0.2g per litre of grow powder feed and 3ml per litre of root stimulant, I made up a litre of the feed solution.

Then I gave the 2 Silver Back girls with dry dirt 100ml of the feed solution, the other 2 girls should be ready for a drink tomorrow, I forgot to keep turning the tray the plants pots are on each day, the 2 plants nearest the cupboard door dry faster.

Here are a couple of images of the plants I took this afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon I started harvesting the Cheese and I managed to harvest both of the Exodus Cheese plants by 8pm and I decided to call it a night and this morning I started to harvest the first of the Green House Cheese plants then after lunch I finished harvesting the second plant.

I then released the ducting from the inline extractor fan and lifted the fan and carbon filter out of the grow tent and set them up directly below where the Cheese plants are drying along with the dehumidifier.

Then I put the LED back into the tent and tidied the cable routing and then I placed the Silver Back girls onto a large saucer and put them into the grow tent then I set the LED at about 18 inches above the plants.

This morning when I checked on the Silver Back girls after the LED switched on I could see the dirt in their little plastic pots was dry and they all felt light, so I gave each of the young plants 100ml of water.

Next time their dirt dries out I will feed them again, it looks like their roots have conquered the plastic pots now, so I may even put them into 12ltr root pouches.

This morning when I checked on the Silver Back girls I noticed that the dirt in their little plastic pots was dry so I gave each plant 125ml of the feed solution I made up last week.

Then I mixed up 3ml or root stimulant per litre and 0.2g per litre of grow powder feed and I made up 2 litres of the feed solution ready to be used as required.

Here are some images of the plants that I took this afternoon.

This is how the cable for the little 6 inch fan is usually routed in a slow spiral around the tent pole.

22july-2020-small-fan-cable.thumb.jpg.264e158f3719c05385449bb05a86697c.jpg

I have pulled the fan cable behind the tent pole and a few times to hold it neatly in place, but as the plants grow and I move the LED and the fan upwards I change the way the cable is trapped to avoid the cable becoming coiled tightly.

I will put the plants into the 12 litre root pouches in a few days time I want to pressure wash them all before they are used again, one especially looks dirty, I pressure washed 3 of the pouches before the last run which are pretty clean but I did not manage to pressure wash the 4th root pouch before it was needed.

The plants seem to be enjoying the LED it should be interesting to see how they perform over the next few days.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls they are now 4 weeks old.

On Friday morning the dirt in their plastic pots was dry so I gave each of the young plants 150ml of water.

On Friday afternoon I pressure washed the 12ltr root pouches and cleaned them.

Here are a couple of images of the plants I took yesterday (Saturday) afternoon.

This morning the dirt in the little plastic pots was dry again so I took the clean root pouches out to the shed and then I moved the Silver Back girls out to the shed ready to be moved into their root pouches.

As I put each plant into the clean root pouches I stripped off the first node and I also added a table spoon of Plant Magic old timer organic granules to the hole in the dirt to help with root growth, then I topped up the dirt in the root pouches.

As I put the dirt into the pouch I lightly press the dirt rather than pack it down as I used to do in the past this makes it easier for the roots to penetrate the dirt.

Then I moved the plants back into the house and then I gave each of the plants 250ml of the feed solution I made up the other day and then I put them back into the grow tent under the LED to continue to soak up the rays.

Here are some images that I took to document the process.

The thing in the centre of the plants is some watercress I have been playing around trying to work out how to easily grow the stuff, I got some beans and at first I tried using the containers the cress comes in from the shop.

I used kitchen roll and managed one crop, I also tried blotting paper but the problem is buying good quality blotting paper like I used to buy when I was a pickney at school, the stuff I bought was crap, the problem was the same as with the kitchen roll the water stagnates in the bottom of the container.

Last week I came across a video where they use three trays and bottom feed (old school) in the video they use coco coir, the medium goes in the middle tray which has holes in the bottom, this sits in the bottom tray to catch water, the third tray is used for light deprivation for the first 3 days.

I used plastic plant pot saucers for 6 inch plants pots and drilled holes in one saucer then I put a bit of old all mix into the saucer to form a thin layer of dirt and then I spread the water cress seeds on top of the dirt and sprayed them and the dirt to make them nice and wet, then I placed it into the bottom saucer and the third saucer I placed on top of the seeds and dirt.

I also placed a little glass containing coins to weight down the top saucer, this helps with root penetration of the dirt, I just kept checking them a couple of times for the first 2 days to make sure the dirt and seeds stay nice and damp, some seeds stick to the top tray you just brush them back onto the dirt.

By day 2 the seeds should have swelled up and germinated I kept the top saucer on for 3 days by then there were lots of yellow leaves and they were pushing the top saucer upwards even with the weight on them its amazing.

Then after 3 days I took off the top saucer and let them enjoy some natural light and I also squirted 10ml of water into the bottom saucer by then they had pushed out lots of roots, I also mixed 1ml per litre of root stimulant and 1ml per litre of the organic grow feed and on about day 4 and I gave them 20ml and they loved it.

They are now about 7 days old so I am alternating water and feed they can really drink and take on some feed I am giving them 40ml three times per day and 60ml at about 9pm to carry then through the night.

Over the next few days as they reach the height I want to cut them at, I will just give them water, they fed the cress in the video right to harvest but I am not sure what the nutrient was, so I will play safe and just give them water.

It has been an interesting experiment, I was about to give it up as a bad idea until I saw the video.

With the Silver Back girls I am just waiting for them to produce node seven then I will top them all and give them a few days to recover and then flip the timer and get them flowering.

More updates to follow, happy growing... :pleasantry:

On a couple of the plants a couple of the lower fan leaves have gone yellow I was thinking of feeding them again, but I decided to be cautious and just give them water then feed next time. If they seem to be hungry I can increase the amount of feed in the solution.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:
