Silver Back Test Grow 2020 Completed

Recommended Posts

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls they are now 5 weeks old.

Yesterday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they had all grown the seventh node so I topped them at the sixth node and then I gave all of the plants 250ml of feed solution.

Here are some images I took.

There was not enough of the feed solution for all of the plants so I had to mix another litre and while I was weighing out the powder grow feed my digital scales were not working properly.

When I weight out the powder feed I place a piece of paper on the scales pan and I know from previous use the piece of paper weighs 0.07g but I have to keep tapping the scales pan a few times because it keeps displaying the weight as 0.9g or 0.08g before it settles down and displays 0.07g.

Recently it displays the weight of the piece of paper at 0.08g so once it keeps reporting this weight consistently I then zero the scales and start to weigh out the powder feed.

Yesterday as soon I zero the scales they kept going wrong they struggled to display a weight below 0.05g after I had to zero the scales a few times and I finally managed to weigh out 0.04g so I halved it and put it into the water and the other half back into the powder feed bag.

I was so pissed by the time I had finished I got a lump hammer and smashed them to bits, the scales were only £17 and with shipping they cost £21, I went to the web site where I bought them and looked at some priced at around £70 to £100 but the warranty was similar at around 3 years, so I just got another set of the same scales.

It turns out that the scales were actually under warranty, but I would have had to piss about sending them to the manufacturer and I need a replacement set of scales as soon as possible, so it was easier to just buy another set of the same cheap scales.

This is the reality of consumerism products designed to break that cannot be repaired, so the only choice is to replace them with the same crappy products and it doesn't matter how much you spend it does not mean the product is better quality.

I will let the plants recover this week after being topped, they are now about a month old so next week I will adjust the timer and get them on a 12/12 photoperiod and get them flowering.

Time for a quick midweek update on the Silver Back girls.

On Monday the dirt in the root pouches had dried out so I gave each plant 350ml of water each.

The new digital scales I order arrived today, after opening the box and checking the scaled were working OK I noticed that the warranty in the literature that came in the box it says the warranty is a lifetime or 30 year warranty.

But on their web site on the product page it says it has a 3 year warranty https://myweigh.com/product/triton-t2-xl-1000/

You need to click on the Additional Information next to the product Description directly below the product image and there it states the product warranty is 3 years.

Yet on the FAQ's page https://myweigh.com/faq/ they provide information about a Lifetime/30 Year Warranty and what it covers.

Quote

What Does the My Weigh Lifetime/30 Year Warranty Cover?

Normal wear & tear, as well as user-caused damage to the scale exterior or internal components, are not covered under warranty. Any form of misuse, abuse or mistreatment to the scale will void the scale’s warranty. Accessories such as bowls, trays, finishes, calibration weights, clasps, hinges, feet, AC adaptors and batteries are also not covered under warranty.

There description of what the warranty covers only covers what is not covered, they just contradict themselves it looks to me like there is no warranty they are just chatting shit.

The scales work OK and displayed the correct weights when I checked them with some brass weights I have, so if they break I will just buy another set to replace them I certainly won't be wasting my time trying to get them repaired if they start to become inaccurate in the future.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls they are now 6 weeks old.

On Thursday morning the dirt in the root pouches was dry so I topped up the dirt so it is the same level in each pouch and then I mixed 3ml per litre of root stimulant and 0.03g per litre of GHS powder grow feed and I made up 2 litres of the feed solution.

I then gave the plants 400ml of the feed solution each.

This morning (Sunday) the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they all felt nice and light, so I gave the plants 400ml of water each.

All of the plants have recovered well after I topped them and they are all busy building new nodes.

The smallest plants is 22cm tall and the tallest plant is 28cm tall.

Here are some images I took yesterday afternoon.

Now that the plants have all recovered after being topped last week and they are now over a month old I have reset the timer to a 12/12 photoperiod and I have put the bloom switch on the LED into the on position so they are now getting full spectrum.

The LED will now switch off at 18.30pm instead of 00.30pm from now as they forward.

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls at the end of week one of 12/12

The plants are still growing and stretching making lots of new nodes to populate with buds.

On Wednesday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt nice and light so I mixed 3ml per litre of root stimulant and 0.3g per litre of GHS grow powder feed I mixed 2 litres of the feed solution.

Then I gave each plant 450ml of the feed solution.

Yesterday Saturday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt nice and light so I gave each plant 500ml of water.

Next time the dirt dries out I will give them their first feed of the GHS hybrids powder feed.

Here are some images I took yesterday afternoon.

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls at the end of week two of 12/12

Last Friday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and all of the plants felt nice and light so I gave them 500ml of water each.

This morning the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they all felt nice and light so I mixed 4ml per litre of root stimulant and 0.6g per litre of hybrids powder feed and 0.4g per litre of booster PK+ and I made up 4 litres of the feed solution.

Then I gave each of the plants 750ml of the feed solution.

Here are some images of the plants that I took on Saturday afternoon.

I have been playing it safe with the amount of feed I have given the girls so far and as you can clearly see in the image of the plants in normal light viewed from above they are a bit hungry.

So today I gave them the full amount as per the GHS powder feed instructions for week 3 of 12/12 so it looks like they can consume plenty of nutrients.

Now these girls are moving along nicely I need to think about what beans to pop for my next indoor run, I am thinking about popping 4 Sweet Mango autos I have grown them before its a great strain and a nice smoke, then I am thinking about checking out the Doctor having seen some great results last year in the 3rd Mega Contest.

I am now thinking that I was wrong about the the plant being hungry because they all have some nutrient burn, I think there may also be some nutrient build up in the medium as well, so to tomorrow I will pass 4 litres of water through the medium in the root pouch of each plant to flush it.

Maybe the medium is only good for one run, I will buy a 50 ltr bag of Lite Mix ready ready for the next run, I am well pleased with it on the run outdoors with the 2 Cloud Walker girls they have done well despite the recent crappy weather.

Hopefully flushing the dirt will balance things out and they will have cool runnings again.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls at the end of week four of 12/12

On Tuesday the dirt in the root pouches was dry so I gave each plant 1000ml of water again next time the dirt dries out I will give them a mild feed.

On Thursday morning the little RAM 6 inch fan died so I went to the local hydroponics store and got a replacement fan, I had to go on the bus otherwise I would have got some dirt too.

The smallest plant seems to have been affected by the nutrient burn most, after taking photos of the plants yesterday as I checked the images I noticed spider mites one the smallest plant, so I mixed 500ml of Trounce and sprayed all of the plants.

Here are some images of the plants.

When I checked the smallest plant just before the LED switched off at 18.30pm I could not see any spider mites the Trounce obviously did the job and killed the little gits and when I checked them this morning there were no spider mites on the smallest plant or any of the others, fortunately when they are in the tent the foliage from any plant does not touch any other plant.

On thinking about the next run I decided that because this run has not gone well I would pop 4 more Silver Back beans which I put onto damp kitchen roll on Friday to start germinating and by this morning all 4 have popped.

I have some bad news and some good news, first the good news to start on a positive note I am going to get the surgery on my leg to remove the broken plate so I won't be able to do a smoke report this is because I wont be able to have a smoke until my leg has healed so during this time its tea and brownies only.

No smoking not even clean bud, because when you burn it the smoke contains carcinogens this will slow down the healing process.

So I will describe the smell and then update later when I can smoke some bud again, by then it will be well cured and the second run should also be sat in jars too.

I have loads of stalks and trim for making edibles so hopefully I won't have to use any bud for a while at least.

More updates to follow, happy growing... :pleasantry:

The bud is closing up and fattening up, and producing lots of resin, as soon as the dirt dries out I will feed and water them.

Yesterday I noticed the smell is getting stronger in the room so I have the extractor fan running now for the last few weeks of flowering as the smell gets stronger.

One of the 4 new Silver Back beans stalled, fortunately I had 2 left so I popped another and it is now under the fluorescent tube with the other 3 seedlings at the moment I am giving them water with Plant Magic root stimulant at 1ml per litre.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Now we are in week 7 of flowering I think I will run them for 9 weeks, so when the dirt in the root pouches dries out again I will give them a final feed then for week 8 and 9 they will only get water.

The last of the Silver Back seedlings to germinate for the next run had a few roots coming out of its Root It plug and the other 3 were well rooted, so I put them into 6 inch wide pots in some Lite Mix.

I am still giving them water with root stimulant until they get comfy in the dirt then I will start to give them a mild feed every other watering, one of the fan leaves on one of the seedlings has gone brown from where it was touching the fluorescent tube.

So I have lowered the plastic tray so they are no touching the fluorescent tube any more, at the moment they are on an 18/6 photoperiod I cover them or place them under a cardboard box in the morning at 06.30am and then uncover them at 12.30pm and put the plastic tray back under the fluorescent tube.

Now they are bigger I will put them in the grow tent until the LED switches off at 18.30pm then I can put them under the fluorescent tube over night until I cover them in the morning.

The tent should be empty before they get too tall to cover them with the cardboard box and they can carry on vegging with the tent to themselves I am thinking I will veg these 4 for a few weeks longer this time rather than flipping them into flower as soon as they are a month old.

Although the plants are small the bud is really starting to fill out nicely and they are getting nice and fat and the smell is getting stronger in the tent I am pleased with their progress.

More updates to follow, happy growing... :pleasantry:

mmmMmm... I think I can smell from here the resin of those buds, they look very resinous my friend, great job. Those pots are really good, I still remember when I used them, but I had to water very often and that limited me a lot.

Have a good week!

@Jose.gh inner luv for the kind words bro, yes the buds produce plenty of resin :good:

I love the root pouches compared with using the plastic pots I used in the past, with the plastic pots I found the dirt did not dry out as efficiently, but the root pouches really help the dirt to dry out efficiently and establish a wet dry cycle, I think they also help the plant to transpire better.

Although when I was using the plastic pots I did not have a dehumidifier in the tent during flowering to also help keep the humidity under control.

I think your nice warm climate would have probably made them dry out quickly too, at the end of the day I suppose its about what is best for the conditions your working with.

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls at the end of week 7 of 12/12

I am really busy at the moment getting on top of a few jobs, so this will be a short update this week.

On Monday I fed plants, I mixed 0.3g per litre of GHS hybrid powder feed and 0.3g per litre booster PK+ made up 4 litres of feed solution and gave each plant 1 litre of feed solution, this was the plants last feed.

Then on Thursday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt nice and light so I gave each plant 1 litre of water, from now on the plants will only get water until I harvest them.

Today (Sunday) the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they all felt nice and light so I gave each of the plants 1 litre of water.

Here are a couple of images of the plants I took earlier today.

As you can see I now have the next run of Silver Back girls in the grow tent until the LED goes off at 18.30pm then I move the plants under the fluorescent tube in the cupboard until 06.30am then I place them on the floor and cover them with a cardboard box until 12.30pm when I moved them back into the tent.

I took some photos before I watered the plants and as I was looking at the photos I noticed that scruffy little Silver Back on the far right in the images above has spider mites again, so I sprayed all of the plants with Trounce to kill the little bastards, I will spray them again tomorrow just to be sure.

I got a magnifying glass and had a look at the plants and it is only the little scruffy one that is affected, but it is always best to spray all of the plants anyway.

This is week 8 of flowering so I will let them go 9 weeks and then harvest them, then I will give the grow tent a good clean.

On Tuesday morning I am going into hospital for surgery on my leg, I may be booted out on Wednesday if all goes well or Thurday at the latest, so the plants will be OK until then, I can always give them a little drink on Tuesday morning before I go if the dirt is looking a bit dry just to make sure they will be OK.

Due to going into hospital I have not had a smoke since Monday night, at the preoperative assessment last week I was given an A4 sheet of paper with a load of information about things to do and not to do, and one of them was not to take recreational drugs for 7 days before the surgery.

I had already started to reduce my intake anyway in anticipation, so it has not been a problem other than the first couple of nights struggling to get to sleep, but that soon passed.

Once I get home I won't smoke any collie for a week or two until the flesh has healed up, the problem is the carcinogens in the smoke when you blaze up, they slow the healing process, I have loads of trim, so I will be making brownies and tea instead.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Time for a progress update on the Silver Back girls at the end of week 8 of 12/12

I went into hospital on Tuesday morning and they did the surgery on my leg and removed the broken plate it turns out the damn thing was in two pieces, which made the surgery less they did not have to open my shin the length of the plate to remove it.

On the x-rays it looked like the break went halfway through the plate, so I could not understand why it felt like it was pinching or nipping my flesh when the ends bumped together each time I took a step as I walked, anyhow I am well glad the thing is out of my leg and it can't cause me pain anymore.

Then on Wednesday I was discharged and I came home, I am still using crutches and have to only put a very light load through my leg because the surgeon is worried about the screw holes making the bone weak so I have to take it easy and use the crutches.

When I got home I had a brew and a piece of canna brownie then I went upstairs to check on the girls and the dirt in their root pouches was dry so I gave them all 1 litre of water each.

Here are some images I took this afternoon.

All of the Silver Back girls 4 almost ready to cut and 4 new ones in the grow tent under the LED.

All of the bud on all of the plants has closed up and fattened up they are nice and solid even on the little scruffy one, the dirt in their root pouches was dry this afternoon and they felt light when I took photos of them, so tomorrow I will give them 1 litre of water each, then next time they dirt dries out probably around Wednesday they will get their last drink.

Then they will get the chop its harvest time the the new 4 Silver Back girls will have the tent to themselves.

More updates to follow, happy growing... :pleasantry:

Yesterday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they all felt nice and light so I gave each of the plants 1 litre of water each.

That was their last drink as soon as the dirt in their root pouches dries out again I will harvest them.

The dirt in the little plastic pots of the 4 new Silver Back girls was dry so I mixed 0.3g per litre of grow feed and 3ml per litre of root stimulant and I made up 2 litres of the feed solution.

I then gave each of the young Silver Back girls about 130ml of the feed solution each, next time the dirt in their little plastic pots dries out they will get about 150ml of water each.

Once I have cut the 4 mature Silver Back girls the new ones can have the grow tent to themselves.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Time for an update on the Silver Back girls.

Yesterday the dirt in their root pouches was dry and they all felt nice and light.

So it was time to cut and harvest all 4 of the Silver Back girls.

Here are some images of the plants that I took before I started to harvest them.

At 12.30pm when it was time to wake up the new young Silver Back girls I put them straight into the grow tent under the LED so they could spread out a bit and start to enjoy having the tent all to themselves now.

This morning the dirt in their little plastic pots was dry and they all felt nice and light so I put them into 12 litre root pouches in some fresh BioBizz Lite Mix.

Then I put them back into the grow tent under the LED and then I gave them 200ml of water each.

Before I put the new Silver Back girls into the root pouches I emptied the old set of 4 root pouches from this run and shook out the dirt to clean off and look at the roots for each plant and I was well impressed.

13oct-2020-sb-root-balls.thumb.jpg.935f6d27a99b7e9630687a8a7f808423.jpg

As you can see in the image above all of the root balls were a decent size despite the fact they were small plants, when I compare them with the root balls from the Cheese from my last run they are about twice the size.

Around the start of this strain test I saw a video on You Tube and it showed a guy repotting some plants and when he put the dirt into the pot he did not compact it at all, he put a bit in the pot t start with to find the level he wanted the plant to sit at, then he just placed the plant into the new dirt and put fresh dirt into the pot around it.

Once he had the root ball covered he tapped the pot to help to settle the dirt and he explained that he never compacts the dirt into the pot, because it helps the roots to reach out and conquer the pot if the dirt is loose.

So with this run when I put the plants into the little plastic pots I did not compact the dirt and when I put them into the 12 litre root pouches I did not compact the dirt I just held the sides of the root pouch and bumped it onto the table top to help the dirt to settle and that was all.

As long as the plant is stood upright its all good, her roots will soon conquer the pot and stabilise the dirt.

I will let these 4 new Silver Backs settle into their root pouches over the next couple of days and then I will top them all then I will let them veg for at least 2 more weeks before I flip the timer back to a 12/12 photoperiod.

The flesh in my leg is healing great I had the clips removed yesterday after I harvested the plants I had eaten a couple of pieces of brownie and then I had a spliff of GH Cheese before I went to the health centre to get the clips removed.

There were about 18 clips in total, it only took the nurse a few minutes to remove them and put a plaster over each site, the incisions have healed well they look really neat an tidy.

So all of the bud is now hanging on a string line I have the dehumidifier sat on the back on a chair and the extractor fan sat on the chair directly below to help things along.

With my leg healing up quickly I will be able to do a smoke report once the bud is dry enough to smoke in about a week.

Happy harvesting... :pleasantry:

Yesterday the Silver Back bud on the stalk was nice and dry and the little stalks holding the bud to the main stalks made a snapping sound when bend and snapped off cleanly from the main stalk they were attached to.

So I cut the bud off the stalks and then I placed the bud into a Kilner jar.

Here are some images I took during the process.

The total yeild of bud from all 4 Silver Back girls was 38.8g and there was 4.4g of trim.

For me the Silver Back bud smells earthy and herby with a sour aspect to the smell similar to the Sweet Valley Kush.

When smoked thew bud tastes herby and earthy and there is also a very subtle fruity aspect to the taste.

The for me the vibe hits straight away no creeping up from behind and it lasts for hours, I had 2 fat king sized spliffs last night and I had a really good sleep.

Happy growing, harvesting and smoking... :pleasantry::smoke::drag:
