The first run of Silver Back girls was a bit messy so I decided it would be a good idea to do a second run, so on Friday the 4th of September 2020 I started to germinate another 4 Silver Back beans by placing them between damp kitchen roll.

24oct-2020-sb-04sept-4-new-beans.thumb.jpg.5325c9268e068994617f184ac10eb438.jpg

I kept the kitchen roll damp and when I checked the beans the following day 5th of September 2020 one of the beans had cracked its shell case, I left the beans between the damp kitchen roll in a drawer in the dark.

The following day 6th of September 2020 the other 3 beans had cracked their shell cases and their tap roots were visible as well so I left them between the damp kitchen roll in the drawer to let their tap roots grow.

24oct-2020-sb-06sept-4-cracked-beans.thumb.jpg.a91fa5c49e184e35a8d0a13b89f55c64.jpg

Unfortunately one of the beans seems to have mis-fired the next day 7th of September 2020 when I checked the beans three had nice long tap roots, but the fourth bean had not pushed out its tap root and after cracking its shell case it seems to have stalled on the starting line.

24oct-2020-sb-07sept-3-live-beans.thumb.jpg.fb4364d44ff4ff064ce5077abd8ede9b.jpg

The tap roots on the other 3 Silver Back girls were nice and long so I mixed a mild solution of Plant Magic Root Stimulant in a jug and placed 3 Root It sponges in the solution to soak for a few minutes.

24oct-2020-sb-07sept-root-plugs-soaking.thumb.jpg.1f2bb46a485e5b48e495e1e65501987b.jpg

Before I placed the Root It sponge plugs into the solution I slide the blade of a pair of scissors into the hole in the middle of each of the sponge plugs and then I cut down one side of the sponge plug to split them.

Then I placed the 3 germinated Silver Back girls into a sponge plug

24oct-2020-sb-07sept-bean-in-plug.thumb.jpg.672061da6323260891e2bf3d4c9c3fcd.jpg

Then I put each plug into its little black plastic pot and sat them on a plastic saucer and then gave them a few mls of water and root stimulant.

24oct-2020-sb-07sept-3-planted-plugs.thumb.jpg.42e5d0d7929940960cd7ced2e042dfc4.jpg

Then I put the plastic saucer with the root plugs and Silver Back babies under the fluorescent tube.

24oct-2020-sb-07sept-3-babies-fluro.thumb.jpg.a7cdf722a95987cef73e5985dc5631b6.jpg

The last bean is has definitely dropped out :bad: it has not changed in the past few days.

24oct-2020-sb-07sept-1-dead-bean.thumb.jpg.c1d06564d2aef2c8c0c951a5929017e7.jpg

I then put a new Silver Back bean between the damp kitchen roll to germinate and to give the other bean a chance in case it is just very slow.

The next day 8th of September 2020 when I checked on the 3 Silver Back babies in their root plugs and switched on the fluorescent tube in the morning they had all come earth strong and had grown above the sponge surface.

The new bean has not cracked and the old bean has not changed it still looks dead.

The following morning on the 9th of September 2020 when I checked the 3 Silver Back babies they were a bit taller and looking healthy I dripped a few mls of water on their sponge plugs to keep them damp.

24oct-2020-sb-09sept-babies-taller.thumb.jpg.c21409a977bd0a54c5158d5350f6f659.jpg
The new bean has now cracked its shell case after two days between damp kitchen roll and still no change with the other bean I think we can safely say that this bean is officially dead an done.

24oct-2020-sb-09sept-bean-germinated.thumb.jpg.86ffab38ee7866324948120b6546915a.jpg
I left the new Silver Back bean in between the damp kitchen roll for a couple of days to allow the tap root to grow longer and a couple of days later on the 11th of September 2020 it was time to put it into a Root It plug.

24oct-2020-sb-11sept-bean-plug-ready.thumb.jpg.8bd3967746d8eb2a99ab3366fb310fb0.jpg

I then put it with the other 3 Silver Back babies.

The following day 12th of September 2020 when I checked on the silver Back babies and switched on the fluorescent tube the new one had come earth strong and grown above the surface of the sponge plug.

I am well pleased with the growth of rate of the seedlings so far they seem quite strong and vigorous.

Four days later on the 16th of September 2020 the last seedling that germinated is now about the same size as the other three Silver Back seedlings.

24oct-2020-sb-16sept-4-seedlings.thumb.jpg.8a7a270d25642a53e351752138e35765.jpg

They are all growing well and they have plenty of roots even the last one to germinate so they need to be planted in some dirt in little 3 inch plastic plant pots.

24oct-2020-sb-16sept-roots-close-up.thumb.jpg.57b982e53d02a27117d70ad1c9ec19d0.jpg

Then I put them back under the fluorescent tube.

24oct-2020-sb-16sept-new-pots-fluro.thumb.jpg.947599bade40314f1b0be4ac513938f0.jpg

Here they are 11 days later on the 27th of September 2020 the plants are now 3 weeks old

24oct-2020-sb-27sept-4-young-plants.thumb.jpg.7462a30ca9557cba27676298a0a7cf76.jpg

The Silver Back plants are on an 18/6 photoperiod I switch off the fluorescent tube at 06.30am when I get up then I switch it back on again at 12.30pm at lunch time and at this point I move them into the grow tent with the older Silver Back girls to enjoy some full spectrum light from the LED.

On Tuesday 29th of September I went into hospital to have surgery to remove a plate from my leg and I was discharged the next day I had water the plants on the Sunday and the dirt in their plastic pots was dry and they were all ready for a drink of water, but otherwise they were OK.

Two days later on Monday the 12th of October I harvested the 4 original Silver Back girls from the first run.

So the tent was now empty so the new young Silver Back plants can have it all to themselves, so I changed the timer to an 18/6 photoperiod and set the bloom switch on the LED to the off position.

The following day 13th of October 2020 I decided it was now time to put the young Silver Back plants into the 12 litre rot pouches that they will finish in and get them settled into some fresh dirt.

Here are some images I took as I put them into the root pouches.

Time for a mid week update on the 4 new Silver Back plants.

Yesterday when I checked the plants in the morning and rotated them around the grow tent I noticed the fan leaves on one plant were looking pretty droopy and the others were also just starting to do the same thing.

I decided to leave them until later in the day and I then checked on them in the early evening and they all had droopy fan leaves so I decided that I would give them a drink.

All of the plants are very green and healthy looking so I decided that because this is the middle of week 8 of veg I should play safe and give them 1 litre of water rather than a feed to give the dirt a bit of a flush.

I used a jug to carefully pour the water onto the surface of the dirt slowly to allow it to be absorbed, despite this there was plenty of run off water coming out of the bottom of each root pouch.

This morning at 06.30am when I checked the plants they all looked nice and healthy and no droopy fan leaves.

By the time the dirt dries out it will be time to reset the timer to a 12/12 photoperiod, so I am considering whether to give them a final feed of the grow nutrients ready for the stretch or their first feed of the hybrids nutrients.

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 8 of veg.

Yesterday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt light and the fan leaves were starting to droop.

The fan leaves are a dark green and they seem to be healthy and happy, but I really want to avoid over feeding them and giving them nute burn like the last run, so I decided that I would play it safe and just give each plant 1 litre of water.

Here are a few photos of the plants I took this afternoon.

Today is the last day of veg for the girls tonight I will flip on the bloom switch on the LED and tomorrow I will reset the timer so they are on a 12/12 photoperiod to start the flowering period.

Next time the dirt dries out in their root pouches and they are ready for a drink I think I will give them a mild feed of the hybrid powder feed, hopefully they will be ready for a feed as they start to stretch.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

This morning when I checked on the 4 Silver Back girls I noticed that the fan leaves were starting to droop so I decided to leave it until later in the day to give them a feed.

So at about 6pm half an hour before the LED goes off I mixed 4ml per litre of root stimulant and 0.3g per litre of hybrids powder feed, I mixed up 4 litres in total and then I gave each of the plants 1 litre of the feed solution.

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 1 of 12/12.

On Thursday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and the all felt light and their fan leaves were starting to droop so I gave each of the plants 1 litre of water.

One of the plants was a bit taller than the other 3 plants so on Friday morning I did a bit of LST on the taller plant I used some soft string to tie down the stalks and I fixed the string to the root pouch with paper clips so they can be adjusted.

Here are a couple of images of the plants that I took this afternoon.

I did take images of each plant but it looks like the SD card in my camera is mashed up, a few months ago I noticed that the card casing has split so I need to buy a new one.

Now I have done some LST on the taller Silver Back the canopy is a more even, hopefully over the next couple of weeks the other 3 will gain more height as they stretch.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

  • 2 weeks later...

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 2 of 12/12.

On Monday the dirt in the root pouches was dry so I mixed 4ml root stimulant and 0.3g per litre of hybrids powder feed and I made up 4 litres of the feed solution and then I gave each plant 1 litre of the solution.

Then on Thursday the dirt in the root pouches had dried out again so I gave each plant 1 litre of water.

Over the past week I had noticed discolouration on fan leaves on the tallest plant so on Friday morning I had a look with a magnifying glass and there were loads of spider mites, so I sprayed all of the plants and treated them with Trounce.

And I stripped the tent down and cleaned it with some bathroom cleaning spray that contains bleach, then I put the filter and inline fan back and then the LED, then I also set up the cable for the dehumidifier.

Then once the foliage on all the plants was dry I put them back into the tent under the LED.

This morning when I moved the plants around the tent I attached the duct to the inline fan and filter and switched the inline fan on then I put the dehumidifier into the tent and set it to 45% and then I pu the plants back into the tent.

By the end of last week it was obvious that the Silver Back girls were going into flower and by Wednesday there were lots of pistles and bud sites visible on all of the plants.

Here are a few images that I took yesterday.

All the plants look happy, when the dirt dries out next time I will play it safe and give them 1.5 litres of water to give the dirt a flush and avoid over feeding them.

I am defoliating as fan leaves at the bottom of the plants start to fade and yellow.

Next time the dirt in the root pouches dries out I will give them a feed again, I am please with this second run the plants are a lot more healthy this time compared with my first run.

The bud on the top stalks is stacking nicely as well, it was well worth vegging them for 8 weeks.

Now that we are starting week 4 of flowering I need to start thinking about what beans to pop for my next run.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 4 of 12/12.

The plants are all healthy and doing well and quietly building bud which is stacking nicely on the main stalks on each plant it was well worth vegging the plants for 8 weeks.

As I was looking at the plants on Tuesday I decided to get a magnifying glass to check if the spider mites were rallying round and I noticed a few of the little buggers.

I decided to checkout other sprays and even those smoke bomb things in case they are getting used to the Trounce, and I spotted some spider mite predators in sachets that you just hang on the stalks of the plant.

They recommend using 2 sachets per plant, so I ordered 8 of them, and they arrived on Thursday and I put 2 sachets on each plant, that is all you have to do just hang them on the plant, the sachet has beanie holes for the spider predators so they can come and go, like us popping out for a take away.

They are supposed to be good for 4 weeks so that will get the girls through the last part of flowering.

On Thursday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt light so I mixed 4ml root stimulant and 0.4g per litre of hybrids powder feed 0.3g per litre booster, plus 0.5g per litre Old Timer organic magnesium. Mixed 6 litres gave each plant 1.5 litre of the feed solution.

This morning the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt nice and light so I gave them 2 litres of water each to make sure there was some run off and give them a bit of a light flush to hopefully avoid nutrient burn.

Here are some images of the plants that I took late yesterday afternoon.

I also bought a new 6 inch fan, it is 2 speed, I have not attached the clip part and I have put it on the floor facing down on the low speed so it is moving air around the bottom of the tent.

29nov-2020-6-inch-fan.thumb.jpg.94d0350d6a518932cecb30c57ad2b319.jpg

While I was checking out the spider mite treatments and fans I noticed the CO2 stuff and had a look and I decided to order a TNB Naturals CO2 generator bottle https://tnbnaturals.com/collections/frontpage/products/the-enhancer

The bottle is supposed to last for about 4 weeks so it will be interesting to see what difference it makes.

I am not sure how I will position it, they recommend hanging just above the canopy, but they also recommend placing on the floor if the temperatures are high and as far away from the extractor fan.

So with me having limited space I think the best thing is for me to put it on the floor in the center, probably sat on something so its above the fan circulating air around the bottom of the tent.

I also have a 6 inch fan blowing air onto the top of the canopy which is just below the LED and the extractor fan and filter are above them at the top of the tent as high as possible hung off two bars that are part of the tent.

I think that with air flow above and below circulating air around the canopy it should be OK and the plants will get the benefit of the extra CO2 it will be interesting to see how they all progress.

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 5 of 12/12.

All of the plants are doing well, and since I hung the spider mite predator sachets on the plants they have not managed to re-infest any of the plants, the tallest plant has suffered the most out of them all.

She has obvious signs that they have tried to re-infest the plant, but the predators are obviously winning the battle, I noticed some debris on a few fan leaves, maybe spider mite predator shit, there was quite a bit of it on the top and under side of a few fan leaves.

The fan leaves had also yellowed as well so I removed them and threw them away outside.

On Wednesday the dirt in their root pouches was dry and they felt nice and light so I mixed 4ml root stimulant and 0.4g per litre of hybrids powder feed 0.3g per litre booster, I mixed 8 litres gave each plant 2 litres of the feed solution.

In the afternoon the CO2 dispense bottle from TNB Naturals arrived so I followed the instructions on the bottle and added 1 litre of warm water and then I gave it a good shake and removed the sticker from the top.

05dec-2020-co2-grow-tent.thumb.jpg.c952d78035aeada5dfb04be8bee8cf35.jpg

At this point I had already though forwards and I had the grow tent door open just enough so I could reach inside and place the bottle on the floor because after a vigorous shake when you remove the sticker it starts hissing as it releases the CO2.

So I quickly placed in onto the tent floor next to the fan which is on the low speed facing downwards pushing air around the bottom of the tent and then I quickly zipped the tent door shut, I don't want to waste any of the CO2.

This morning the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they all felt nice and light so I gave each plant 2 litres of water.

Here are some images of the plants I took earlier today.

After a few coats of thinking I decided on The Doctor for my next run, so on Tuesday the 1st of December I put 4 of The Doctor beans onto damp kitchen roll in a little plastic container and then I placed the plastic container in a drawer wrapped in a small towel.

The following day they were still soaking and on Thursday the 3rd of December they had popped and split their shell casings and their ting tap roots were poking out, so I left them another day to let the tap root develop and grow a bit longer.

On Friday the 4th of December the tap roots were much longer and ready to go into root plugs.

05dec-2020-dr-tap-roots.thumb.jpg.9001f18e2f5208223ca12f3d9898a7de.jpg

So I mixed 2.5ml of Plant Magic root stimulant per litre of water and I mixed 2 litres f the solution I put 1 litre into a little bottle and then I put the rest into a jug and soaked 4 Root It sponges for half an hour.

Then I put the newly germinated The Doctor beans into the Root It sponge plugs and put them onto my window ledge.

This morning one has passed the surface of the sponge plug and is earth strong and the other three are at the surface of the sponge plugs they should have come earth strong by tomorrow, then I will put them under the fluorescent tube.

05dec-2020-dr-root-plugs-2day.thumb.jpg.416a1ad10fe5e325566f69100e0de81c.jpg

I am well pleased with this second run despite the spider mites they are all healthy and transpiring hard, it will be interesting to see what effect the CO2 has on them, hopefully it will make the buds super fat.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

  • 2 weeks later...

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 6 of 12/12.

All of the Silver Back girls are doing well and it looks like they are enjoying the benefit of the extra CO2.

On Tuesday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt light so I mixed 4ml root stimulant and 0.3g per litre of hybrids powder feed 0.3g per litre booster, I mixed 8 litres of the feed solution and then I gave each plant 2 litres of the feed solution.

On Thursday as I was looking at the plants I noticed there were some rassin spider mites on the tallest plant on the bud at the top of one stalk, so I ordered 8 more of the spider mite predator sachets to double them up.

Then just before the LED went off I removed the spider mite predator sachets and put them into a plastic container with a lid, then I sprayed all of the plants with Trounce and then put them back into the tent for the night.

The following morning I put the sachets of spider mite predators back onto the plants, the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt light so I gave each plant 2 litres of water, with the tallest plant I had to insert 2 bamboo canes to support a couple of the stalks they were a bit floppy because the plant was thirsty.

After a couple of hours the stalks were looking better and supporting themselves better, but I have left them in place because they are heavy because of the bud and they still have a couple of weeks to go so they will only get heavier.

The new spider mite predator sachets arrived around lunch time so I put them on each plant so they now have 4 sachets of spider mite predators per plant, hopefully they will keep on top of the spider mites now and I won't have to spray again.

Today the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they felt light, so I took some photos of the plants then I mixed 4ml root stimulant and 0.3g per litre of hybrids powder feed 0.3g per litre booster, I mixed 8 litres of the feed solution and then I gave each plant 2 litres of the feed solution.

Here are some of the images that I took.

This is week seven of flowering so it is the last week they will be fed, so as soon as the dirt dries out again in the next couple of days probably Tuesday I will give them 4 litres water each to give the dirt a flush, before their last feed, and then they will only get water, no more nutrients for the last 2 weeks.

The Doctor seedlings are doing great they are on an 18/6 photoperiod and they will be 2 weeks old tomorrow, they have plenty of roots poking out of their sponge plugs now so I will pot them tomorrow in some Lite Mix in plastic pots.

More updates to follow, happy growing... :pleasantry:

A quick mid week update on the 4 Silver Back girls.

The dirt in the root pouches was dry this morning and they felt light so I gave each of the plants 4 litres of water.

That should give the dirt a little flush there was some run off from each root pouch and it was pretty clear.

As soon as the dirt dries out again I will give them their last feed, then its water only until the end of week 9 when I harvest all of the plants.

The young Doctor plants are looking nice and healthy under the fluorescent tube in their little plastic pots.

Happy growing...

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 7 of 12/12.

All of the plants are doing great and building lots of dense bud.

On Wednesday the dirt in the root pouches was dry and they all felt light so I gave each of the plants 4 litres of water to give them a drink and give the dirt a flush.

I keep checking the plants with a magnifying glass and it looks like the spider mite predators are doing their job and killing and eating all of the spider mites.

I am glad I put the CO2 enhancer dispenser in the grow tent the bud is getting nice and dense especially on the tallest of the 4 plants.

Here are some images of the plants that I took this afternoon.

Time for a quick mid week progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls.

This morning the dirt in their root pouches was dry and they all felt light.

So I gave each of the plants 2 litres of water then put them back inside the grow tent under the LED.

There was some run off from the root pouches and it was a very light brown hue.

When the dirt dries out again and they are ready for a drink I will give them 4 litres of water each to give the dirt a little flush.

Time for a progress update on the 4 Silver Back girls at the end of week 8 of 12/12.

All of the plants are OK and the buds are getting fatter.

Yesterday the dirt in their root pouches was dry and they all felt nice and light so I gave each plant 2 litres of water.

After watering the plants as I checked the images I noticed there were some spider mites on the tallest plant on just one stalk so I quickly removed the spider mite predator sachets and then sprayed the splant with trounce, then I left the plant until it was dry before I put it back into the grow tent.

I checked over the other 3 plants using a magnifying glass and did not find any more of the little twats, but I will keep an eye on things at least they only have to get to the end of this week and I can harvest them all.

The 4 Doctor plants are doing great and they are all nice and healthy this afternoon I gave them their first feed I will be using Plant Magic nutrients for this run.

Happy growing... :pleasantry:

Time for a quick update on the 4 Silver Back girls.

Yesterday the dirt in their root pouches was dry and they all felt light so I gave each plant 2 litres of water.

I am keeping an eye on the plants using a magnifying glass to check for spider mites and I am glad to say that there is no sign of the little bastards coming back.

Fortunately the spider mites window of opportunity is closing fast, the plants only have to get through the next 4 days to reach the end of week nine and then I will harvest them.

Then I will give the grow tent a good cleaning before I put the young Doctor plants into the tent for the next run.

I also need to think about preventing spider mites, to make sure they do not come back, with the young Doctor plants I have avoided putting them into the grow tent during the day in the last few weeks of flowering so the spider mites do not get a chance to infest them.

All of the young Doctor plants are nice and healthy and growing well under the fluorescent tube for the first month of their lives, so they will definitely enjoy the LED when they do go into the grow tent next week.

More updates to follow, happy growing... :pleasantry:
