The GUMBY hash method - gravity hash

What is gumby hash?

The gumby hash is physical seen ice hash or also known as bubble hash. The main difference between the bag and gumby ice hash method, is the trichrome size. With gumby we not need any bag so we are able to catch up all sizes of trichromes. With equipment the most of us have in kitchen, we can start a gumby session today. This tutorial shows you howto get the best and cleanest gumby hash results, with cheapest equipment. I did the following method more then 7 times and it works best that way, so make sure you read this tutorial several times before you start and/or improve a better way. Think about the physics of each step and become Mr. Hashisch for your friends :).

The Equipment

You will need the following equipment:

1. Trimmings of high quality (minimum 70grams, you could mix it with cuttings from clones also)

2. two Buckets, ice and water (the more ice the better, but try to not conflict your mix process)

3. A mixer

4. Latex Gloves a pair (the water is very cold, but if you hard you not need them)

5. Sallad Screen or the ones for noodles are also good

6. Synthetic fine meshed curtain for the second filtering

7. Three glass jars

8. A funnel with 10mm diameter and a funnel with 2mm to 4mm diameter.

9. Paper towels or shit paper for soaking the last water

10. Alu foil or baking paper but the last maybe soaks water if stands for long time. So we use ALU!

The first mix and disolve of trichromes in water

Now we begin with the mix process. Don't forget to grab a clock now, because you need at least a mixing time of 15minutes.

For the filtering of green stuff

2011-12-30%2013.09.18.jpg

The mixing equipment, do that in kitchen or in the bathroom, dirt dirt dirt...

Now we fill water ice (use smaller ice parts for easy mixing or the mixer takes damage after some runs!) in the bucket. After that grab the trimmings and fill them into the bucket.

2011-12-30%2013.10.55.jpg

The ice block, i crush it in the water... i always freeze it myself, it is cheaper!

2011-12-30%2013.12.15.jpg

Crushed with a big knife

2011-12-30%2013.12.51.jpg

This are the trimmings, fill them into the bucket. As you see you can use and mix high quality with low quality...

Now stirr the trimmings for about 15minutes and don't stop before this time, also if much foam comes up.

2011-12-30%2013.13.59.jpg

We begin with mixing...

2011-12-30%2013.26.06.jpg

The foam comes up after 5 to 10minutes. But keep on.... for another 5minutes

The first filtering

Now after 15minutes we get the noodles screen or sallad screen and remove all the biger green parts from the water, but keep an eye on the foam, it holds trichromes! The foam will later go over to fluid, so not remove the foam and hardly press out all green stuff.

2011-12-30%2013.28.22.jpg

2011-12-30%2013.29.02.jpg

Press it out very hard, it holds trichromes

Now you will have left the water, the foam and the trichromes with unfiltered green parts inside.

2011-12-30%2013.33.53.jpg

The second filtering

This step is very very important as it decides of your end products quality. I'am using a fine synthetic curtain as filter, pull it over a smaller bucket and drop the water from the main bucket over the screen. Best step before is to make the curtain wet with cold water, That will make the screen more robust.

2011-12-30%2013.35.41.jpg

Curtain wrapped arround a smaller pot

2011-12-30%2013.36.12.jpg

Dumping the water over the curtain into the pot

2011-12-30%2013.37.11.jpg

Don't forget to press the curtain out like a tea bag

2011-12-30%2013.37.52.jpg

This curtain acts like a tea filter

2011-12-30%2013.43.22.jpg

Trichromes tea after second filtering

Fine filtering

Now cleanup the working bucket with cold water, so that there is nothing dirt left inside. Wrap the curtain arround the working bucket and dump the water back into the working bucket. This will look like this:

2011-12-30%2013.46.06.jpg

2011-12-30%2013.47.38.jpg

A shimmering of fine trichromes on the top, use cold tap water to add the stuff that can go thru the screen. But it will be minimal.

Waiting, waiting and again ... waiting

Now let's give the working bucket a couchlock :). I use a pot as podium to get better underpressure later when working with the tubes as syfon. Give the bucket at least 3 to 4 hours time to settle the good trichromes to the ground. In this tutorial i took arround 4hrs.

2011-12-30%2014.00.06.jpg

I keep the water covered during the waiting time

Mechanical seperation process... what happens now?

The mechanical seperation process begins now and the physical actions are done during the four hours of waiting time.

The trichrome particles sink to the ground while the light green particles swim on the top. After seperation is done it is possible to syfon the water and dirt out with the big funnel 10mm.

The tube acts as syfon

Let's grab our glass jars, the big 10mm tube and a second bucket that can catch the dirt water.

2011-12-30%2017.41.31.jpg

This are my jars, the best is to take even jar forms

2011-12-30%2017.45.25.jpg

The funnel should be always on top, don't go to deep inside the bucket or you loose stash.

And don't forget to grab a cup of coffee or some other drink, because the trichromes water tastes very ugly and you need to soak it with your mouth the first time, to get underpressure on the tube. The funnel should be always on top, don't go to deep inside the bucket or you loose stash. You can very soft tilt the bucket on the end to get as much water out as you are able to. Best is a good lighting to have a perfect sight on the bucket bottom.

2011-12-30%2017.45.00.jpg

You not want to soak the water without having a coffee or some other drink after it... cause it tastes very ugly

2011-12-30%2017.46.18.jpg

Outcoming water, that is trash...

2011-12-30%2017.48.14.jpg

and this is stash.

There we go, now you can already see the trichromes in the water. It is important that you stirr it a little to have an even trichrome water level before you drop it into jars.

2011-12-30%2017.49.42.jpg

Waiting again

Let's wait again for another 2 hours and let the water settles the including trichromes to the ground. This is the same as before in the working bucket. The only difference now is the syfon tube is smaller now. In the meanwhile of waiting we can smoke a Jay or Bong and drink another coffee. Also let's grab some more equipment that is needed for the dry process.

2011-12-30%2020.14.15.jpg

This will be the last equipment you will need. The towels are for soaking the water from the trichromes.

Use alu foiliage, it will be stronger.

The dry process

We've been waiting now for arround two hours. And again, lets grab a drink ;)...

2011-12-30%2020.15.20.jpg

2011-12-30%2020.24.15.jpg

On the ground: light brownish trichromes

Now we need to syfon again. We wanna get the last green soup on the top out of the water and the water out of the trichromes. Here we go...

2011-12-30%2020.24.24.jpg

2011-12-30%2020.25.36.jpg

The stuff on the dry parts of the jars can be cleaned with towels before dumping the trichromes to the foiliage. Prevent mixing of them.

2011-12-30%2020.25.51.jpg

Gently move arround with the tube to catch the green from top.

2011-12-30%2020.26.12.jpg

Sorry for the bad quality, but this was shot in action. Best is you give a little tight tilt on the jars during you let the water out.

2011-12-30%2020.27.32.jpg

Dump the last water on the foiliage and go on with the other jars... until

2011-12-30%2020.34.35.jpg

... we have such a green/brown soup. Now folding paper towels to soak the last water.

2011-12-30%2020.36.55.jpg

This is loss from the last dry step but if you feel it between your fingers it includes a little dirt. Trash it.

After we used the paper folded paper towel, we can already see a first result.

2011-12-30%2020.39.12.jpg

Use a putty to remove the wet hash. Don't let it dry completely as you will have problems later with removing.

2011-12-30%2020.39.57.jpg

Collect all in the center of the foiliage and make a ball out of it. But bee careful it is wet.

2011-12-30%2020.42.01.jpg

You can let this dry now, but the best is you do the following steps...

Put this ball on a hand towel. To press the last water out and dry the hash completely.

2011-12-30%2020.42.38.jpg

2011-12-30%2020.43.09.jpg

Now use your left hand to grab the hash ball and screw it until water flow out and redo that step several times until you have the dry endproduct like in the following picture.

2011-12-30%2020.46.00.jpg

That hash is already smokable and dry from outside. So let's do a first test before maturing.

Smoking Test

Let's see how good the endproduct will be.

2011-12-30%2021.09.53.jpg

Grab the equipment.... and let's make fire ...

2011-12-30%2021.12.33.jpg

If you still keep fire on it, it should bring a flame up. This stuff is superb quality bubble....

2011-12-30%2021.12.39.jpg

Wanna say that is dirty?

Fire

2011-12-30%2021.15.42.jpg

So far so good. We've learned that we can create products like professionals with just a minimal ammount of equipment. You don't need to buy every new stuff because you have it often already at home. Be creative. It's just a weed...

bless

Yeah my kitchen mixer almost took fire LOL!

But Very Very nice thread Markus very detailed, i wasn't doing the paper towel thing at the end, so you put it as soon as you put the staff in drying? or you wait for it to dry a little before?

Thanks for sharing man ;) But i miss the gumby song that is on the video i've had so much fun with it crying

Thanks for your comments. I appreciate that very.

@Dust: just make a dome from several layers of paper towel, so that it can hold all the water. Now, if you dump the pasta from the jars on the foil, just wait some minutes until you see a clear water and the trichrome crystals in the middle. It settles very fast and after say 5minutes hold the paper towel with left and right hand and lay it on the foil so that it covers all. Now with a finger touch from the center so that you see the water soaks in. Then you do that also with the left and right side until you soaked as many water out of it as possible. Let the paper towel sit for about 30 seconds, after that time the towel will be wet and you can very tight remove it. Start with a corner of a towel and remove it slowly.
As you see in the picture it is a minimal loss and a better way to have a clean dry trichrome mass. After that you can directly start to remove the trichrome rock and make a ball out of it.
Thats it..... taaadaaaa

Edit: Look at this picture. The trichromes concentrate in center and the fluid runs to side depending on the ammount of trichromes.

2011-12-30%2020.34.35.jpg

The first runs i did with it i used a towel and removed the water on the side but this takes very long time and the loss is maybe much bigger, because smaller parts of towels are so thin structured that they eat the trichromes. Later i noticed, it is better with bigger layers of towels and do that at once....

Thank you DKH. The video you have added is exactly the one i watched first times. But i found some more video tutorials that i used for learning the gumby method. Here it is:

  • 1 month later...
  • 5 months later...

Forget that water biz , the Dry Ice works faster + better it seems - Unbelievable amounts of Kief from a little trim. Nearly 1:2 or something like that. Takes only 10 minutes or so . WACKY BAGS

Maybe the Bubble Hash is of better quality though.

Anyone tried both methods ?

i think the best is too use the gumby technique combined with a bubble bag ;)

But still gumby is an awesome technique for anyone not willing to buy bags or that just can't afford them :)
