CCF_Logo_.pngSaturday 5 May, Cape Town will participate with hundreds of cities worldwide in the Global Marijuana March. The Cape Canna Festival will showcase the vast applications of the Cannabis plant for medical, social and environmental development. Cannabis is a hot topic and its versatility has become imperative to solving rural poverty, social development and housing project problems. Bio-fuel, clothing, insulation, textiles are just a few of Cannabis plants’ 55,000 industrial uses. There is currently only one plant on this planet that can bring true and effective sustainable economic upliftment to the rural and impoverished areas. Cannabis is a true carbon neutral, sustainable resource to our world.

Cannabis is widely prescribed by modern medical doctors worldwide and is legal for medicinal purposes in 16 American states as well as Canada, British Columbia, Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Finland, Italy, Spain, Israel and Portugal. The hemp variety of cannabis is also legal and is being grown industrialy in many countries around the world including Australia, Canada, China, Germany and France to name a few. Why isn’t South Africa doing the same?

Cannabis prohibition applies to everyone, including the sick and dying.

Of all the negative consequences of prohibition, none is as tragic as the denial of medicinal cannabis to to those who need it. The tens of thousands ill patients undergoing chemotherapy, AIDS patients suffering from “wasting syndrome†Glaucoma patients, and those suffering from chronic pain, rheumatoid arthritis and a variety of spastic conditions such as multiple sclerosis, paraplegia, quadriplegia and epilepsy. Cannabis should be immediately made available by prescription to seriously ill patients.

Cape Canna Documentary Screenings

During the midst of the summer season, the Dagga Couple and a talented film crew created a 14 min mini documentary aptly named “Dagga, The Truth!†NORML ZA will be featuring this historically important mini dagga documentary at the beginning each of its screenings at the Cape Canna Fest.

13:00 | a NORML Life | R30

Chronicles the state of medical marijuana in America through interviews with patients, caregivers, activists and doctors. The filmmakers visit locations such as California, Oregon, Washington and Washington DC where cannabis medicine is being regulated for patients. Many interviews were made at Seattle’s Hempfest 2010 and at recent NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws) conferences.

15:00 | What If Cannabis Cured Cancer | R30

Could the chemicals found in marijuana prevent and even heal several deadly cancers? Discover the truth about this ancient medicine as world-renowned scientists in the field of cannabinoid research illustrate their truly mind-blowing discoveries. “What if Cannabis Cured Cancer†explains how we are all born with a form of marijuana already in our bodies, and when pot is consumed, the “endocannabinoids†inside us, along with any cannabinoids we ingest, fit together like a key in a lock. Thereby promoting the death of cancer cells without harming the body’s healthy cells. A powerful and eye-opening film about the future of cannabis, and perhaps even the future of medicine. Narrated by Emmy-winning actor Peter Coyote. QUOTES: “What If Cannabis Cured Cancer summarizes the remarkable research findings of recent years about the cancer-protective effects of novel compounds in marijuana. Most medical doctors are not aware of this information and its implications for prevention and treatment. This documentary presents compelling evidence that our current policy on cannabis is counterproductive and foolish. An excellent film.†-Andrew Weil, M.D. *** “A hugely important film.†-Julie Holland, MD NYU School of Medicine *** “What If Cannabis Cured Cancer brings to light a host of recent findings that have potentially game-changing implications for the future of marijuana as a medicine. A must-see film.â€

13:00 | The Union, The Business behind getting high | Free Screening

A determined but surprisingly entertaining feature documentary on British Columbia’s marijuana industry, The Union kicks off its proceedings with a rapid-fire history of hemp. It then follows with an encyclopedic examination of the B.C. scene, with its grow-ops and the vibrant underground economy that has grown up around them. By the time the film gets around to taking on the contemporary drug laws, it’s so convincing you can’t imagine why hemp and marijuana are still illegal. A powerful advocacy film along the lines of The Corporation, The Union corrals enough former drug officers, jurists and convicted growers that viewers might just begin to wonder where are the powers-that-be who have kept marijuana statutes on the books for the past century. Visually energetic and wildly informative, The Union is a must-see non-fiction film for anyone trying to keep up with contemporary pop culture.

15:00 | WHEN WE GROW, This is what we can do | Free Screening

This Is What We Can Do†is an educational documentary concerning the facts about cannabis. In this feature length documentary we explore everything there is, from industrial hemp to medicinal cannabis use, from the origins of cannabis prohibition to the legality of growing equipment.

16:30 | Clearing the Smoke: The Science of Cannabis | Free Screening

Clearing the Smoke, reveals how cannabis acts on the brain and in the body to treat nausea, pain, epilepsy and potentially even cancer.

Extensive interviews with patients, doctors, researchers and skeptics detail the promises and the limitations of medicinal cannabis. Even though the video has an American perspective, marijuana use is illegal throughout many countries of the world for reasons that are not clear. This video is important because it mainly investigates the scientific basis underlying the medical benefits of marijuana use instead of focusing on the social, political and legal hysteria that have been attached to it.

18:00 | Hemp Revolution | Free Screening

This documentary covers a whole lot of ground. It deals with every historical and contemporary aspect of hemp usage and cultivation (mainly in theU.S.), which turns out to be a lot. From describing the production of a fibre much more durable and economic than wood, the documentary discusses hemps multilateral uses as e.g. food products, as a non-polluting fuel and as a pharmaceutical product with much less grievous side effects than chemical pharmaceutical products. The film also investigates why America went from a country which produced vast quantities of the non-narcotic industrial hemp, to the complete ban on hemp production in 1938. This story in particular is interesting, and it points out that the large oil based industries actually had a key role in the aforementioned ban. Food for thought! The conclusion of the documentary could be that hemp may prove to be a valid alternative to both oil and wood in the future.

19:30 | Super High Me | Free Screening

Determined to find out the true effects of marijuana on the human body, stand-up comedian and former Stoner of the Year Doug Benson documents his experience avoiding pot for 30 days and then consuming massive amounts of the drug for 30 days. More than just an amusing story of one man’s quest to get superhigh, this documentary also examines the hotly contested debate over medical marijuana use.

Saturday 05 May saw the birth of the first Cape Canna Fest, an initiative started by NORML South Africa to unify the South African Cannabis culture and give us all a voice. The day started off with the Global Marijuana March, where roughly 400 tokers gathered outside of Cape Tech University, and joined hundreds of cities around the world in a peaceful protest in the name of Cannabis.

Cars hooting, joints being passed left right and center – smiles and laughter all around. We even got stopped by the 50 at one point, but they couldn’t find any fault in our march permit so we proceeded without any problems. If you weren’t there, then I’m afraid you missed out on quite possibly the biggest blaze up Cape Town has ever seen. It was a truly liberating and moving experience marching though the city of Cape Town together with around 400 fellow tokers. Looking forward to the next one, let’s aim even higher!
