Second grow - 600W HPS + LED's - GHSC: Fully automatic - NL. Sweet Mango, Super Critical

Just realized that the Greenomatic plant takes only 6 weeks flowering to finish which might explain a little bit of the reason for Greeno's plant being more advanced. Damn..I think I just need to sit down and chill with a bag-o vaped goodness and relax the hell down :P

you could add your HPS now , just make sure that you start with it well above your lady's and then lower slowly until you get the optimal distance, i have always only used a hps all the way through from seed and have been happy but it will only be better to add a different spectrum and the hps and led should rock. Thanks for all the detailed info and hope these lady's take off.

You can leave the mesh around the jiffy's , should not make a real difference at all. ;)

hey smokey, nice new grow, now that i do the first post i will be here regulary.

good to see some happy plants again, your a little ahead again against me lol.

i started my hazes and will start a new thread today i think, good luck for this grow, cant wait to see some nice autos, nice pick btw.

peace

to the soil moisture: the plant can use many of it, you are right, make sure you not over water them in the big puts before they are used to them. pot weight is the best signal. absolutely right. i use an injection in the first week big pots to give water particular in the stem area, because there cant be much more root system to catch it up...

hope it helps, i know the question wasnt dedicated to me but i had time, and no post here so far. good luck bro!!

hey man ;) about Greeno don't compare he grows in coco which is totaly diferent anyway ;)

And 6 days without watering after a pot change soil is fresh and humid and roots have lots of space and usually get some water that day, just give it to them as soon as leaves will start to drop back again and you'll be fine

About feeding, i feed almost everytime with the powder feeding, with regular nutes i feed 2times and only water 3rd or 4th time.

Good luck man keep us updated ;)

Thanks for the reassurance with the jiffy's and the advice with the light, I added it at 90 cm above the canopy to start and they looked pretty happy this morning before lights out :)

Thanks for the soil moisture advice! PLEASE always give advice if you have it atrox, it does not matter to me if I've asked someone else :) Thanks for the kind words and looking forward to seeing those Haze babies of yours too!

Looking nice bro :) School and growing is a mission ;D Grow first > then school :)

With that set up you should get some nice bud from these auto's

Iv got 4 sweet mango coming up so we can compare your indoor with my outdoor :)

peaceee

Hahaha..ya..I wish I was going to school to get a degree in cannabis production lol..I would have no issues paying attention then! I will have to check out your grow bro, thanks for stopping by and adding me to your friends :)

Awesome advice as usual Dust thanks! I decided to give them each about 850 mL of nutes last night as you will see in my next post. I don't like watering without runoff or getting the entire soiless watered but I think I did the right thing in this situation. Next watering will be a full water. I think I will go with just water every 3rd or 4th like you suggested as well :)

Another quick update with a couple pictures since I added the 600W and fed them last night.

PEACE!

25/10/2012

- Soiless was getting fairly dry top 8 cm or so, when I was checking for moisture I noticed nicely developing roots extending out from the jiffy fairly far and area was getting pretty dry, decided to give a light water, next water will be a full one with runoff

- Mixed total 9 liters r/o @ 5.8 pH

- Cal-Mag plus @ 0.50mL/L = 4.5 mL

- DNF Green @ 0.50 mL/L = 4.5 mL

- DNF Gro A @ 0.50 mL/L = 4.5 mL

- DNF Gro B @ 0.50 mL/L = 4.5 mL

- Potassium silicate @ 0.0625 mL/L = approx. 0.60 mL

** Only used 7 liters between the 8 plants

- Plants perked up nicely after feeding, they look very happy and healthy!

- Changed CO2 pad

- Wired ‘digital ballast style’ female plug to ballast, assembled reflector for Cool Tube (twice since I was baked when I did it and assembled the 3 parts before removing the protective film :P) set height of 600W to 90 cm above plants plugged it in and big smiles J. Looks awesome (a bonus) and even without attaching the 6 inch exhaust venting for the fan it seems to keep things quite a bit cooler behind the glass. Temp is at 26 degrees C.

- Also hung 2 of the LEDs along the sides, going to add the 3rd LED once I have something to hang it with

- Will get the vent fan and exhaust hosing hooked up tomorrow so that I can move the light closer in the next couple days & hook up the Seabreeze oscillating fan (using small oscillating fan with tent open since babies have been a bit small to have a fan in the small enclosed area)

Nice update, the new gear will make a huge diffrence. How is the temps after installing the cooltube?

Thanks Toke, temps with the air hooked up are awesome! 25 C @ 60 cm from canopy!..temps so good that I got a tiny bit carried away with lowering them and caused a bit of light stress I think, nothing major, tiny bit of cupping that I caught quickly, and the only thing that changed is steadily lowering the light. I bumped it back up to 65 cm where they seems comfortable and I'm checking on them like a mother hen over her flock lol. It's awesome to know I should be able to get it down to about 45cm once they are grown up enough to handle the increased light strength.

You're entering the contest right? Lots of buzz goin on with it..I'm waiting on my package, can't decide what strain I would like the most :P

tent very interesting ..

I do not see the time for new updates

good luck smokey!! go go

Thanks! These plants will not be in the contest though. I'm waiting on my seeds and powderfeeding and should be germinating at the beginning of December :) Luckily they are auto's and will be finished rather quickly. I apologize for not having an update by now, I should have one by tomorrow or the next day with pictures. They are almost all showing sex and so far all females :) They are also getting nice and stinky..it will be time to close the tent and allow the carbon filter to do it's job.

No, i will not enter the contest but i promote it as much i can

;)

Well you are a great ambassador for the cup, and a great guy to talk to in chat..despite what Dust thinks of your uhhhmmm..fetish for male plants LOL :)

Hello fellow cannabis lovers!!

The babies are growing quickly and seem to be fairly healthy. Being unfamiliar with the growth of auto's it's hard for me to judge how well they are growing for their age but they look happy and I'm happy  . With one sad exception that occurred just an hour ago after taking pictures for the update..I was doing some pre-lst training and bending some plants when SNAP! I broke a Northern Lights completely in half, and not even the one I had already abused argh!! And a definite female too! I feel very amature at the moment..and I know I must be a lot more gentle when bending stems before it happens again and I turn another into an amputee. But the bright side I suppose that she's gonna be one very interesting plant, and one could say I "supercropped the shit outta it" lol..it will be interesting to see how she looks when she's done. In the meantime I'm considering germinating at least one more Northern Lights..I was really hoping for more than one plant leaning towards the sativa hybrid side :( Live and learn I suppose.

So other than that, here is what's been going on for anyone that likes details, and for those that don't just scroll on down to the pictures lol...since there are so many I kept em a little smaller this time..SCROLLING OVER PICS WILL TELL YOU THE PLANT NAME :)

Now, Netflix just uploaded the last season of Family Guy and I missed many of the episodes so time to catch up on a few after a nice big bag of BC Godbud :) I've got some Purple Kush and some Rhino/Haze x OG Kush (excited to try this interesting strain combo) on it's way mail order from a medicinal supplier in British Columbia and should be here tomorrow. I will post a couple pics for all the bud porn junkies :)

OK time for me to finally shut up :P!!

PEACE

26/10/2012

- Was doing a bit of bending to get them ready for some LST and over bent a northern lights stem and broke it! Splinted it with a zip tie, looks like she will be fine (I hope!) Gonna wait to do anymore bending until they are a little bigger

- exception is the last of the sweet mango to sprout w/the splotchy leaves from the start (splotches look like areas where leaf tissue didn’t form completely and is thinner

- Lowered the light to 80 cm @ beginning of their daylight, lowered it again to 70 cm about 7 hours into daylight – Temp @ 70 cm: 27.5 C

27/10/2012

- Attached 6 inch exhaust to fan/filter/cool tube and vented to outside tent

- Lowered 600W to 65 cm – HUGE improvement in temperature with air cooled system J

- Room conditions - Night: 22-23 C rHumidity = 52%

- Day: 25.5 C @ 65 cm rH = 50%

- Plants getting stinky/smell great already, especially notice the Northern Lights, skunky citrus sort of smell, and the Super Critical is nice too but a bit more spicey and skunky so far

- Again lowered to 60 cm

28/10/2012

- Plants look great overall – exception is some slight leaf cupping on the tips, most likely due to light being a bit too close too soon I think, temperature was ok, so most likely light stress so moved light back up to 65 cm for time being

- One sweet mango still has something strange going on with leaves, so far I’m going to let it keep growing and hope it grows out of it. It’s not fungus or disease at all, maybe some bad genes, time will tell

- pots getting lighter a fair bit quicker, root system must be expanding well J, will need to keep a close eye on individual plants and water as needed, some lighter than others.

- Most likely need water this evening (mid-day for plants) or tomorrow

29/10/2012

- still concerned with light stress so moved the light to 70cm

- top of substrate is getting pretty dry but pots are still pretty heavy and when bottom of substrate checked with finger through bottom/side drainage holes, still seems to be plenty of moisture. May add hydrotron to top of pots to help reduce moisture loss near top portion of pot, will also help control dust when top of soiless gets dry.

- SEXED FIRST SUPER CRITICAL (A), SHE’S A FEMALE J. Some others getting close to showing I think.

30/10/2012 – Plants approx. 19 days old (13 days in 11 L pots)

- lowered light to approximately 65 cm from avg. canopy

- 5 days since last water, top of soil getting very dry and pots getting lighter– time to water with runoff

- Mixed total 10 liters r/o @ 5.6 pH (X 2 = 20 liters total between 8 plants)

Cal-Mag plus @ 0.50mL/L = 5 mL

B-52 @ 0.50 mL/L = 5 mL

DNF Enhance @ 0.50 mL/L = 5 mL

DNF Gro A @ 0.50 mL/L = 5 mL

DNF Gro B @ 0.50 mL/L = 5 mL

Potassium silicate @ 0.0625 mL/L = approx. 0.60 mL

- One of each strain showing sex, females J - 3 total now outta 8

31/10/2012

- Plants looked good with lots of new growth, smelling really nice already

- were a bit limp after heavy water, but nothing abnormal, and they perked up really nicely after about 5 hours into the day cycle

- Sex is showing (FEMALE) on 5 out of 8 plants, will record which ones tomorrow when pictures are taken

- Again accidentally abused/hurt one Northern Lights plant when vacuuming runoff water from trays (plant stem already was broken when I was trying to get it ready for lst :P). Sucked off half a fan leaf L. Poor girl must think I hate her.

- Sweet mango with leaf issues seems to be resolving itself with thin spots filling in

very nice photos man, nice looking room full of healthy girls :)

do you find the LED effective so far?

Thanks for the news man those babies seem in good hands ;)

Have a good grow ;)

Thanks for the nice words Dust :) If I don't snap anymore in half they might do ok lol.

As far as the LED's go, MINE (I say mine because other higher end LED's seem to do really well in testing/studies/real life..but they cost $1500+..mine each were $140 CDN lol) seem to do a great job at vegetating plants w/some T5 fluorescent light, and providing supplemental lighting alongside the 600W HPS for flowering. With both grows now I've noticed fan leaves grow seemingly very large and lush fairly quickly. I've thought that this could have something to do with the added mixed spectrum provided by the LED's and/or the CO2 releasing pads that I use OR..maybe I haven't a clue lol. BUT, the 600W provides dry heat, something you don't get much of from the LED's which while is mostly advantageous it also means that your substrate stays colder and it stays wetter for long periods of time. This is something I learned my first grow with the two little Pure Kush plants in the small chamber and it led to over-watering due to my inexperience and not understanding what was happening until it was too late.

great grow report and nice pics , good skills.

You got some good looking girls coming on. :D

I'm a little late arriving for the ride but got my seat firmly pulled up now.

Peace

Lams

Lams, never too late for a party :) Thanks for the kind words and checking things out..happy to have you along!

LST'd the mains stems of the 2 taller Super Criticals, went really well they are very flexible! I will have a few pics of them and of a few strains I'm tokin/vaping right now for everyone who's like me and loves seeing different strains no matter where they come from :)

PEACE

@ smokey LED's are a great way to supliment light spectrums when using HID. Also as you said, when using just LED light to grow, transpiration of moisture from the plant is lower, which means they don't need so much water and the water cycles can be dialed right down.

Peace

Thanks everyone for stopping by..I will have a full update with pictures by tomorrow sometime

Beautiful & best of luck mate!

Thanks Bigbrown! Great to see you growin again too..we should have some nice new ladies to add to the collection soon :)

you must of spend some serious $$$ on those lights

Not too bad really, I've been kinda adding them one at a time as I can afford to..LED's are really coming down in price and improving quickly..I still think I maybe shoulda waited a bit longer to go with em till the tech got just a bit better for cheaper know what I'm sayin?

You got it Lams, thanks for the input :) I'm pretty sure they really round things out and improve growth nicely and are awesome along an HID. I read something somewhere, forget the source or exact details sorry, about how the light energy from LED's is somehow transferred to the lower bud sites in a way that normal HID light isn't resulting in increased production from lower sites, really vague details I know, sorry. But, I noticed this first hand in my last (and first lol) grow..it was a SCROG and the lower buds below the screen were hard, dense tight nugs with decent size, no popcorn at all from the grow. Also noticed that the plants that had the most concentration of LED light for the longest amount of time had the tightest largest lower nugs. I think you stopped by..it's in my last journal :)

Nice looking setup! I'm especially interested in the autos, keep up the nice report and pictures and thank you for sharing with us!

I will be following your grow, keep it high ;-)

Thank you for your kind words Budmeister and for stopping by! I will tell you I was skeptical about autos to the point of thinking I would not want to grow anything but traditional photoperiod buds, well, second grow now and I'm growing auto's  ..thanks mainly to the wicked growers on here sharing and showing that they are something to definitely check out. There is always room for different methods and options/improvements I would think..except GMO of course :suicide: ! I will keep it high as the sky bro :)

Peace!

Hello friends, it's been another good week in the garden. Here is my journal for the week, or as Tokage more accurately put it I think "my diary". For everyone's benefit who doesn't like to read everything, and for myself so I can quickly refer back to notes, I've tried to highlight the main things and left the detail to read if someone if bored :)

A question for my fellow strainhunters that grow/have grown auto's...When does everyone switch from veg to bloom nutes? It's been 4 weeks since sprouting and the Super Criticals have just begun to show multiple pistils as I think I've shown in the pics. Not many, just like 3 or 4 in a cluster instead of the first 2 that appear. I just gave them a good watering with lots of run-off with r/o & only Cal-Mag Plus and a bit of Carbo Logic (it's sugars/carbohydrates usually used for flowering but the mycorrhizae and trichoderma are supposed to be able to feed on it as well).

Hope you enjoy the pictures..I will try to update again next week :)

Peace & happy growin + tokin!

QUICK EDIT: 5 HOURS AFTER WATERING PLANTS ARE VERY NOTICEABLY HEALTHIER AND HAPPIER..NOTICABLE GROWTH AND IMPROVEMENT IN COLOUR, RIGIDITY, STANDING UP TALL AND PERKY FOR THE LIGHTS :) EXTRA R/O W/ A LITTLE MORE CAL-MAG PLUS SEEMED TO MAKE THEM HAPPY

03/11/2012

-- Added new CO2 pad (*NEED MORE PADS)

- Had a look at plants to consider which ones to LST:

- I may still LST the one remaining “good” Northern L. once I’m confident the stem is strong enough where it formed a knot from previous break.

- The Sweet Mango’s have VERY rigid mainstems and I don’t think I will attempt to LST the mainstem – I will most likely do a bit of LST to the side branching on the taller phenol as 2 of them are shorter bushy plants while the other looks like it is going to be the longer pheno like Dust grew.

- The Super Criticals are a bit taller with longer internode lengths and the mainstems are thick and strong but also still very flexible and seem to take well to LST. I was able to tie down 2 of them nicely keeping them more even with the other plants.

- All are officially FEMALE! J

04/11/2012

- Another great day of growing, especially liking the one LST’d super critical, the secondary branches are really taking off with the redirection of auxins

- Humidity staying around avge 50%, temp. daytime avge. 25.5-26 C with max. @ 27.5 C, nighttime low around 22 C.

- 5 DAYS SINCE WATER – pots getting lighter, 1 or 2 plants may need water tonight, if not tonight tomorrow for sure

- Watered Super Critical (A) w/2.5 L r/o +

Botanicare Cal-Mag @ 0.75 mL/L x 2.5 L = approx. 2 mL

DNF Veg. fortifier pwdr @ 0.03 g’s/L x 2.5 L = approx. 0.1 g

DNF Carbo Logic @ 0.1 g/L x `2.5 = approx. 0.3 g

Advanced Nutrients B-52 @ 1 mL/L x 2.5 L = 2.5 mL

DNF Gold @ 1 mL/L x 2.5 = 2.5 mL

DNF Enhance @ 1 mL/L x 2.5 =2.5 mL

DNF Gro A @ 0.625 mL/L x 2.5 mL = 1.6 mL

DNF Gro A @ 0.625 mL/L x 15 mL = 1.6 mL

DNF Potassium Silicate @ 0.125 ml/L x 2.5 mL = 0.30 mL

05/11/2012

- Watered 6 plants w/ 15 Liters total (2.5 L each) r/o +

Botanicare Cal-Mag @ 0.75 mL/L x 15 L = 11.25 mL

DNF Veg. fortifier pwdr @ 0.03 g’s/L x 15 L = approx. 0.5 g

DNF Carbo Logic @ 0.1 g/L x `15 = 1.5 g

Advanced Nutrients B-52 @ 1 mL/L x 15L = 15 mL

DNF Gold @ 1 mL/L x 15 = 15 mL

DNF Enhance @ 1 mL/L x 15 =15 mL

DNF Gro A @ 0.625 mL/L x 15 mL = approx. 9.5 mL

DNF Gro A @ 0.625 mL/L x 15 mL = approx. 9.5 mL

DNF Potassium Silicate @ 0.125 ml/L x 15 mL = 1.875 mL

07/11/2012

- Some yellowing of the tips of the Sweet Mango’s, and very slightly on a few other plants, pretty sure it’s slight nute burn, not enough to flush. My theory is multiple waterings with nutes + root system small and not throughout pot, not using nutes and nutes building up + not enough run-off last watering = nute burn. Next water will be pure r/o w/a bit of Cal-Mag @ 4 L/plant or so and will need to be sure @ least 20% run-off in future waterings. Mango’s seem more sensitive to nutes as I’ve been giving them a fairly light dosage and they seem to have suffered the worst with the Super Criticals barely having any issue and loving the nutes. Could be a combo of above explanation plus auto’s needing less nutes and the growcubes resulting in less nutes needed as well (according to Grodan’s info).

- SHIT! Broke a bud branch off a sweet mango accidentaly L, and noticing some yellow spots appearing on a few leaves, may be a few splashes of nutes on leaves from last water or just more minor nute burn

- Light height: 600W @ 65-70 cm w/LED panels on 45 degree angle approx. 35 cm’s above closest plants

09/11/2012 – Just over 4 weeks old

-Watered each plant with 4 liters each r/o + Cal-Mag @ pH of 5.8(slight flush to correct any toxicity) 16 Liters r/o + (x2)

- Cal- Mag Plus @ 1.25 mL/L = 20 mL

- Carbo Logic (for root zone beneficial microbes to feed on) @ 0.15 g/L = 2.4 g

Decent amount of run-off, approximate avge. 30-40%

- Can see roots at bottom side drainage holes , nice root system developedJ

- Re-tied Super Criticals – LST IS WORKING AWESOME!

- Tallest plant is a Sweet Mango – 40 cm

- Light height @ 60 cm from tallest Mango

- Super Criticals starting to show multiple pistils

very nice complete update man :)

Love the green color they have, careful with the nute you must be not far from borderline of light overfeeding ;) don't forget to give them sometimes some hard water only if you don't do it, once a week more or less and they should be fine ;)

About your flowering grow nute question, i personally switch when the pistil start to appear, i slowly decrease the grow nute, and slowly increase the bloom nute, so that when real buds starts to form she is mainly on flowering nute, but i always keep a little bit of grow nute during the bloom, don't know if it's necessary with your line of nute tho.

Thanks for the pics man girls are looking great ;)

Have a good grow!

good detailed journal :D

Auto sweet mango is one i'd like to try in the future , good to know she is a bit more nute sensitive.

Broken branch is it repairable with duct tape or too far gone for rescue?

I start flower feed as soon as i see a pistle and reduce the grow feed but not completely stop it.

Tons of pics :D good effort.

Peace 'til next time

Thanks friends for the kind words and the input/advice, it's very much appreciated :)

Thanks for the nice pics! They look beautifull, got to get me some autos ;-)

Very nice "diary" btw, It's nice to see your thought process.

Will follow your work bro!

Your welcome, and thanks! So far I'm really happy I decided to try auto's I would say go for it!

nice girls, good to see you are happy with the autos...

have a healthy grow and wait for more cuttings until harvest :D

peace bro

Hahaha..ya cuttings eh? Good advice my friend..thanks for taking time outta your own busy work to stop by :)

Thanks Dust, lots of good advice. I too think I was close to overfeeding them, especially the Mango's..did you also find that they were a little more sensitive to nutes? Really good advice about the hard water..I hit them all with 4 L each of r/o with a nice dose of Cal-Mag Plus (1.25 mL/L) and no nutes last water and they responded really nicely, 2 days later they are growing at an impressive rate filling up the tent nicely. As for switching to bloom nutes, sounds like you and everyone are suggesting the same thing and it's a good thing I flushed em a bit , ready to go with the bloom.

So far so good. I enjoy the show. Easy to read and good spacing between sections of words. The plants do look healthy and the yellow leafs tips are not much at all. Autos can be more sensitiv against full feed. Perhaps you need to alter the dose between the auto and super crit?

I would start bloom feed early. Perhaps when i see the first stigmas. I would still add a little bit extra of N even in flowering for my autos.

Good luck brother.

Thanks for the reassurance & advice Tokage, & happy to entertain ya :) The super criticals are auto's too..but I think you knew that and maybe meant for me to use two different feed levels, I agree this is probably a good idea. The big Northern Lights auto actually also loved the nutes with absolutely no signs of tip burn. The super criticals had a little. I was actually using 1/2 strength or less nutes my last feed+water..but Grodan states that with their rockwool growcubes expect to need less nutes because they are so readily available to the plant. I noticed last grow as well that I couldn't get anywhere near the full strength dosage with the Moby dicks and the Pure Kush's so I'm thinking this might be part of the explanation. Good advice about the N, DNF makes an additive called "Green" that I use that is mainly for vegging (3-2-0) but they say you can also use it to green up the plants during flowering if N is lacking :)

I was looking at my main nutes and they seem to have a fairly high amount N in the BLOOM nutes. The DNF GRO A & B combine for a (2-1-5) NPK ratio and the BLOOM A & B combine for a (4 - 0.5 - 6) NPK.

Happy to have you along Lams, and thanks! I've had a chance to read a few of your contributions to the site and want to say thanks myself, lot's of great info. I would check with Dust too about the auto sweet mango's being sensitive to nutes before I make any kind of hypothesis for sure but they seem to be. The NL auto took the nutes like nothing and the super c.'s barely got any burn.

Once thing I noticed is that when I gave them all a good dose of Cal-Mag plus with the last water they seemed to REALLY like it. Yesterday while looking for info on autoflower nutes on here I happened to find and skim through a post you made regarding LED and nutes that you had located somewhere, wish I had saved it :P What caught my interest was that the article mentioned that LED lights seem to create a need for more calcium I believe because of the type of growth the LED wavelength produces. Very cool to see what might be firsthand experience of this. It will take some more playing with nutes to see if this works for my set-up but it was awesome to have that awesome info to help me recognize this.

Have a great weekend everyone..I'm off to do some trigonometry :P:mole:
