Growing Medium

My 100% Organic Soil Mix

Each 15 gallon batch of reclaimed, recycled, Fox Farms Ocean Forest Base soil I reconditioned w/

The soil mix that I used for those 3 plants originally was:

  • -1.5 cubic feet(roughly 11 Gallons) Fox Farm Ocean Forest
  • -2 Gallons(roughly 30 cups) perlite
  • -3 tbsp Hi-Cal lime
  • -1 ½ Gallon(24 cups) Wiggle Worm Earth Worm Castings
  • - ¾ cup Espoma Tomato Tone 3-4-6
  • -1 ½ cups Algamin Kelp Meal 1-0-2
  • - ¾ cup Espoma Greensand 0-0-0.1
  • -7.5 cups Glacial Rock Dust

_________________________________________________________________________________

1st week above soil 24/0.

I mist the soil whenever it looks like it’s dried out at the surface. No regular waterings the 1st week. Only misting! The soil is moistened thru prior to sewing my germinated seeds

But nothing interesting really happens this week.. Just scrawny seedlings trying to get their bearings!

2nd week above soil 18/6.Thoroughly water the seedlings and allow adequate runoff to ensure that soil is wet all the way thru.

This week things are getting a little more interesting as you notice that your plants have really grown since just a couple week ago when they broke soil!

I’m sure that I can transplant them at this point, but I’ve chosen to go against an early transplant, to allow to core of the root mass to really develop in the solo.

For drainage and added oxygenation i’ve devised a 3 solo cup scheme. The bottom solo is untouched and the middle solo is cut the same as the one that the seedling sits in. I prune the roots the root growing out of the draining spaces as well, so that they don’t start circling the cups.

3rd week above soil 20/4. @ 21 days above the soil roughly, I’ll be looking to transplant from 20oz solo cups to 1gal grow bags and should be ready to top/train the plants!

Last run, my most vigourous growing plant ending up being the one I kept in the solo cups the longest @ around 30 days. So I’m hoping to build off of that with a transplant a little sooner than that.

The plan initally was to finish that plant in the solo just to see what I could yield, but it started showing signs of being rootbound, so I transplanted it into a 1gal bag, and then a #3 smartpot shortly after that, and that plant ended up being the top producer and most vigorous grower of the batch.

Once I get them in the grow bags, I’ll proceed with the thread!

_____________________________________________________________

But as far as my growing style goes, I’m an organic small container farmer.

Start in 20oz solos, veg in 1gal bags, flower in 3 gal smart posts under 600w HPS. 3-4month start to finish.

I’ve recycled and reamended the soil from the last group of plants I’ve harvested, so we’ll see how that goes!

I’ve also just started my own compost bin with red wiggler worms, so here within a few month I’ll be able to harvest some RICH vermicompost!

And my soil mix is one that’s designed to go from start to finish with water only, but I use ACTs regularly as I’ve seen tremendous results from their use. Here are a few recipes recipes that I use and a few links to everything compost tea & organic gardening that I found useful:

Microbe Organics

Compost Tea Recipes For Nutrient Dense And Biologically Rich Teas

The Dirt Doctor via The Texas Organic Research Center(organic resource site)

_________________________________________________________________________________

Aerated Compost Tea Recipes

*30-48hr for nutrient cycling brew

Long Brew Balanced ACT:

Kelp Meal @0.25% = Almost 2tsp per gallon

*Brew for longer than 24hrs with kelp, as kelp delay bacteria multiplication initially sometimes

Fish Hydrolysate @0.063% = Almost ½tsp per gallon

Hi-P Bat Guano @0.063% = Almost ½tsp per gallon

Compost/Vermicompost/EWC @2.38%(max) = A bit over ⅓cup per gallon.

Molasses(Blackstrap or Unsulphured)@0.25% = Almost 2tsp per gallon

*When using more than just these amendments^^^, it’s fine to adjust the amount to avoid overkill

Alfalfa Meal @0.25% = Almost 2tsp per gallon

*Good fungal food and good for the long brew which is nutrient cycling

_________________________________________________________________________________

Short Brew Balanced ACT:

*18-24hr brew for “bennie” brew

Fish Hydrolysate @0.063% = Almost ½tsp per gallon

Hi-P Bat Guano @0.063% = Almost ½tsp per gallon

Compost/Vermicompost/EWC @2.38%(max) = A bit over ⅓cup per gallon.

Molasses(Blackstrap or Unsulphured)@0.125% = Almost 1tsp per gallon

*When using more than just these amendments^^^, it’s fine to adjust the amount to avoid overkill

Alfalfa Meal @0.25% = Almost 2tsp per gallon

*Good fungal food and good for the long brew which is nutrient cycling

___________________________________________________________________________________

Worm Tea(Veg ACT)

*24hr brew

*Also good for foliar spraying

Worm Castings @2.38%(max) = A bit over ⅓cup per gallon.

Molasses(Blackstrap or Unsulphured)@0.125% = Almost 1tsp per gallon

Fish Hydrolysate @0.063% = Almost ½tsp per gallon

____________________________________________________________________________

Fungal Dominant(Flower ACT)

*18hr brew

*Ok to use after 10hrs for fungal dominant brew

Kelp Meal @0.25% = Almost 2tsp per gallon

*Brew for longer than 24hrs with kelp, as kelp delay bacteria multiplication initially sometimes. Don’t use more kelp. Use less if using soluble kelp

Fish Hydrolysate @0.19% = A little over 1tbsp per gallon

*Ok to try slightly higher amounts

Hi-P Bat Guano @0.063% = Almost ½tsp per gallon

Compost/Vermicompost @2.38%(max) = A bit over ⅓cup per gallon.

Molasses(Blackstrap or Unsulphured) @ 0.5% = A bit over 1tbsp per gallon

*When using more than just these amendments^, it’s fine to adjust the amount to avoid overkill

*Notes

*Fungal compost: Powder oatmeal 1:20 with compost, kept damp and covered for 8-10days

*Fungal compost: Use ¼cup per gallon of fish hydroysate to dampen compost with, then cover for 5 days

__________________________________________________________________________________________

And here are some Botanical & "other" Recipes:

Aloe Vera Foliar Spray = 1/4cup of fresh aloe fillet per gallon of water.

*use immediately after making solution

Organic Cal/Mg Foliar Spary = 1tbsp(or 1-3tsp) epsom salt per gallon of water

*dissolve epsom salt in hot water prior to.

Diatomaceous Earth Foliar Spray = 2cups diatomaceous earth per gallon of water.

*sort of like a protekt effect and also an organic insecticide

Coconut Water Foliar Spray = 1cup of pure 100% coconut water per gallon of water.

Aspirin Water Foliar Spray = 3x81mg tablets water per gallon of water.

*triggers plant SAR defense mechanisms!

Mildew Prevention Foliar Spray = 2.5cups milk per gallon of water.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

But there you have my tactics in a bottle!

If you have any suggestions feel free to offer your input as I’ve still got quite a bit to learn.

But if you have any questions, feel free to ask, as I’ve learned quite a bit to this point and may be able to help you out!

Cheers to master gardening!

Coming soon brother! Right now they're in solos and are above ground now for 17days.

I've been trying something different with this batch, based on something I observed last run.

Of 3 White Widow, my plan was to keep one in a solo cup from start to finish, while the others got transplanted "on time", and then compare and contrast..

Well, the White Widow left in the solo cup for the longest time ended up flying by the other two in terms of growth!

& it was literally night and day pretty much in the end result in terms of production.

The one left in the solo and transplanted later on yielded almost as much as other two White Widow combined, so I'm letting them all get stay too long in the solos to observe what happens.

I've also been pruning the roots that grow out of the bottom drainage spaces.

I don't think the plants like it based on the fast that they look a bit stress at only 17 days, but in theory, they should explode with growth once I do transplant them.

As of now, it's looking like I willl have transplanted them within the week, so pics will be coming soon w/ that transplant!

Question for ya tho: Have you any experience with root pruning a seedling? I simply clip the roots the grow out of the bottom of the solo maybe once a week.

Ps. I'll def. be sharing once things get going! First couple weeks is pretty boring, but once things get in to the full swing of veg it heats up! Come wk4 of flowering things should be ON FIRE around these parts!

have you been doing this root pruning for a long time? i've read some things about it but never had the oporutnity to try it myself. Are you liking it?

No I haven't. The first time I did it was maybe 5/6 months ago.

As far as this batch goes, the first pruning was 6 days ago, and the last will be today when I water them.

It stunts the growth some it seems, and causes some evident stress, but in observing areas you removed the roots from, within a few days you'll notice how much more dense the roots are where you cut them at, so I could only imagine the same thing happening at the core.

I read that root reacts like chutes in terms of pruning so that explains it.

And all in all, for a novice is might look a bit troublesome and cause one to want to water the plants or do something else like feed them when it's not necessary. So in my past experience, a root pruned seedling may look a little rough around the edges the last week or two as a seedling, but once it starts to veg, it TAKES OFF!

I'll share some pics just prior to transplant as well to illustrate what I mean, but basically it looks like the plants are hungry for some N, or that the pH of the soil may be causing a lockout when I know it's not that.

There's some faint yellowing that occurs, but it all goes to lush green within a few days after transplating.

The word from some brief searching around tho, is that pruning roots equal more root tips, and more root tips mean more water & nutrient absorbption.

thanks for the feedback man, yeah i guess the stress at the moment must be pretty intense for them you better have a nice strong stable strain ^^ but i also have no doubts that once it goes back the root growh and the plant development must enjoy it :)

No problem bud, I'll be around

But stable ummm....I'm not really sure about any of them at the moment lol. Other than the Ace Of Spades from TGA Subcool Seeds.

Since I'm not pheno hunting atm, I've been buying a seed at a time until I find a few that I want to keep around...Maybe take a few years, but I'll be patient!

So far I've really liked Dinafem's Blue Widow and Delicious Seed's Critical Jack tho. Seedsman's White Widow is also a nice STRONG indy dominant strain for sure.

The Bubba Kush that I'm growing from GHS is doing something REALLY funky right now as well, so maybe you guys will have seen this before and know what the issue is, but the 1st set of true leaves are fine, while the 2nd set is absolutely morphed.

It's the only seed that I've gotten from GHS to date, so I hope I don't end up having to scrap it!! This past year I've only had to toss a couple seeds...-

-G13 Labs Pineapple Express

-Sweet Seeds Ice Cool

So there's a heads up on those two particular strains/seed co.

Both germinated, but neither broke soil. Could have been due to sewing the seeds too soon(should have let taproot grow a little more prior to sewing.

Interesting topic with the root pruning , you must keep us informed on how it goes mate, and of course some pics xD

Yessir! Gonna go ahead an transplant them today as they seem like they've already had it with the 20oz solo cups, so I'll snap some pics here afterwards and def. keep you guys informed! They're def. showing signs of being rootbound already tho.

This current batch of soil I've inoculated with mycos spores and the root mass seems to be nice and developed at this point, moreso than the last run!

Pics soon!

Sooo, here are just a couple pics as things start to officially veg.

The photos attached are:

(1) of the entire group of plants that I have right now, as well as an Aloe Vera plant under a 400w T5 VHO

(2) the individual shot of my Greenhouse Seeds Feminized Bubba Kush. It's doing something REALLY WEIRD but I plan to just let it grow for the time being to see what it does for now. Still gonna get my hands on some Kalishnakova even if this fails me!

As far as the entire group goes, they've suffered a bit of stress stemming from the root pruning, which I won't be doing again.

I can't say whether or not if it helped, but I can say the plants have definitely shown that they DO NOT like it when you prune their roots. At least not seedlings. So if anything, I'd say go with air pots for the desired effect, rather than letting your roots grow thru the drainage slots, and then pruning them.

My advice is that you can/should just transplant on time to avoid any shock to the seedlings.

But since being pruned, the seedlings have all shown issues from what looked like deficiencies sometimes, to nutrient burn.

Personally, I attritube it all to the root pruning as they're definitely not deficient in anything due to it not being there, and the soil that they're in shouldn't be hot, as I let it sit for at least a month after re-amended it..

They are all gradually getting noticably greener from the bottom up so I expect that trend to continue.

They've been transplanted now for an entire day, and should be taking off within a few days here as they officially begin to veg.

In the next couple days I'll be topping them all above the 2nd true node, so that they all grow 4/6 dominant

colas! First to let them recover from my failed attempt at root pruning!

21Days From Seed(14 for the Bubba Kush Pictured, and the Bay 11 which is to the above right of the Bubba Kush in the group photo.)

HighTimes - "The Strongest Strains On Earth 2013"

http://www.hightimes...st-strains-2013

*Currently running the Darkstar which tested amongst the highest @ 22%, so I'll report for sure!

*Greenhouse Seeds Super Lemon Haze is listed, but I guess it's a pheno thing, as I harvested one this past April which couldn't have tested at 22% based on the punch it packed.

The taste as well as the smell however was immaculate!

I should also add that it was a local bag seed, so I have no idea where it came from originally.

Thanks brother.

Gonna post some pics here soon to show just how much they've bounced back since I've transplanted them!

Just gave them their first ACT too. I used this recipe and brewed for 18hrs:

And yeah, nice that GHS is on the board!

I just hope my Bubba Kush straightens itself out so that I can rave about GHS!

So today is Day3 Veg

23days from seed

16days from seed for my Green House Seeds Bubba Kush, and my Grandaddy Purple Seeds Bay 11.

This update is just to document the quick turn around that they've made in the 48hrs since being transplanted from 20oz solo cups, to 1gal grow bags! The first few leaves of a couple have been scarred by my experiment, but from this point forward, everything should be LUSH green

As far as the Green House Seeds Bubba Kush, still unsure of what's to come. It shall be seen

Yes indeed! Back to happy! This is how they'll look from now until about 2 weeks from harvest!

And thanks for easing my mind in regards to the Bubba Kush. Glad you've seen it before as I haven't! Looking forward to the outcome for sure tho!

Gonna order some more seeds here soon and other than the Kalishnikova, I'm not sure what I'd get from GHS. Any reason why everything is feminized(That you know of)?

I'm looking into buying only reg seeds since my last order, so that I can hunt for some keepers.

Cheers Dust

Nice getting the root ball outta the solo nicely bro! Things should get quite nice for you in the next few days!

And no need to make a thread lad, you can just use this one too is you want to. Or make a thread. Whatever

Cool! coming up soon I'll be topping the girls back to just about the 2nd or 3rd true nodes and cloning them.r

Just trying to give them a good week to get growing in the new pots before I start training on them again!

But they're growing VERY rapidly right now!

I figure I'll limit myself to a couple times per week with pics, so that we can see some growth with each update!

But don't worry, things are heating up around these parts! Sooner than later they'll be HUGE! I'll keep ya posted for sure!

PS, any idea why the pics I uploaded work sometimes, and sometimes they don't?

Picture before i vacuumed and put Mylar around the lights for reflection

Nice! It's a start boss! Better than my first set up lol!

Also, keep in mind that the CFLs take a little longer to do the job, so don't be discouraged if the growth isn't explosive right away.

All we're looking for is the perfect shade of green with all the new growth!

PS. That root ball looks VERY good for just a few weeks in the solo bro!
