what i mean is exactly what you are saying, no way will they allow it. but sure would be cool to see, probably the whole region would be cool to see. Vietnam, Cambodia all those areas must be awesome. I grew up in the 60's and 70's and all that stuff brought back from the vietnam war was pretty stony. a lot of the stuff here (Hawaii) came from there. now more indica influence is here.

Thailand is good. But for the real good one from that region i think you have to go to Laos. During the Vietnam war a lot of the ganja smoked there actually came from Laos. My favourite strain.

How do you go strain hunting exactly? Is it a case of just going on a trip and finding some fields and bringing the seeds back, at the right time of year? Or, do you find a dealer like you would with Hashish, and buy an amount of seeds? Or would you have to specifically arrange it through friendly connections in that area?

All off the above bringcannibisback.................But it's a life style a commitment to travel and learn.It took me about 3 yrs to be really excepted into the Village I ended up staying in for almost 9yrs in India. Is bit more to it than a walk in the feilds. Most feilds in India, Thialand, Nepal and Afganistan if your seen snooping about and should'nt be there you will be asked to leave pretty quickly. In the hills off Thialand we stumbled on a feild and where asked to leave with a fully armed escort, had to do some fast talking that day lol lol lol lol. To many Charis, hash and pot is there livley hood. In Indian, Thialand, Afganistan and Nepal villages protect there strains. It's a very big rivalry for the village and valley with the best stuff. I found being an outsider I was given very little infomation till I gained trust and lived as a local not a western tourist. Strainhunters vids are great and I'm shore both Franco and Arjan would say they wouldn't have been possible without a few inside contacts..............

Best way so you no what's what is to find the field and the grower who owns it. Spend some time with them show genuine intrest. In India I have bought seed by the Kg direct from the grower to plant in our feilds the following year. So going direct if you can is the best way...

The problem you will find with buying from a dealer on the street or a lane way is you really don't no what your getting end off the day pot seed looks all similar and no way really of telling a plant strain from just a seed. In Thialand, India, Afganistan and Nepal they will say its anything to get your cash.

And friends around the world are a great thing to have....................Happy growing

Really nice destination indeed in order to show where does one of the most tool breeding strain comes from, with the north mountain close to chang mai / pai area, or to the beach of Ko chang island or more deeep south.Such a dangerous law in the "country of the smile", and such a nice smoke to have after swimming during the sunset, lying on the hamac =) ZZzzzzz. Could be nice to get some skuff from a thai plant =)

That sticks changed over time. In the early to mid 1970s they were skinny and tied onto bamboo sticks and wound with bamboo or hemp threads. They had a strong sativa high. The seeds from those were used to start the Maui Waui strains in Hawaii, and many strains in South Africa. Later in the 80s Thai sticks became fat cigar shaped things and (supposedly) they started dipping them into hash oil to make them more intense. At that point I could not smoke them any more, as the high from them resulted in severe cough lock.

 

As for homemade Thai sticks like these... dipped in wax/shatter? Dunno why you would want to do that. I make Temple balls from hash oil by grinding dried green sugar leaves in a coffee grinder and adding it to the oil so it is smokable. Vials of hash oil are messy and a pain to deal with.

Big Sur,  your description of the 70's Thai-sticks is exactly what we got in the late 70's and early 80's, to the T.  Man, it's almost as if you were one of our clan back then.

But, I know, you were west coast.  Back then I was Central TZ.

Well, back then it was an underground brotherhood. Light up a joint anywhere, and you had 3 new friends. I miss those days. I recall buying a quarter pound of Thai Sticks and going to Lake Tahoe in my '67 Mustang in '79. My brother and I were totally trashed for a month on those. I sold that car for $1,200! Now its worth more than 30 grand! Of course, the insurance was more than a grand a year, and I only paid $900 for that car. Gas was 80 cents a gallon.

And for the sticks i tried only one one of those modern version it is pretty nice, but like you said too strong, There are a few account on instagram that got pretty strong making sticks like this, first one i believe to bring it back to life in big quantity and really cool informative post was afgoohead i believe, check him its worth looking and see how he makes it with love ^^but still i wouldnt smoke it daily haha

First of all I'm sorry for the sad year of 2017 for Strain Hunters.

 

I know this is a old thread and i am not here to keep the original topic, but to tell my experience.

 

About the thai sticks, I was born a bit late to know what you guys are talking about, but defiantly looking forward to make one myself one of this days (i think i will never have one if not making it myself).

 

I've been been twice to Thailand (2010 and 16) and every time having really nice smoke there.

The first time i've been also to Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.

 

In Cambodia i just arrive at a Guesthouse in PhnomPen and immediately the owner asks if i want to have 10 USD of weed, without thinking my answer was "OF COURSE", he then suggested me not to buy it outside as there were always someone asking if i want to buy, one hour later there he was with a small bag to smoke (about 3 or 4 grams), he then allowed me to smoke at the guesthouse, it was really nice weed.

 

Then in southern Vietnam everything got a bit more difficult, i had to insist to some taxi drivers so they could get me an expensive non tasting stuff, really not nice (i also found the people in Vietnam much colder than in the rest of Southeast Asian countries, but still Southeast Asian). In the north of the country (Hanoi, the capital) the same happen, it was difficult to get something expensive and it was not nice, also had to drive some long distance with a rented mopped through the chaotic two wheel traffic to get to a quiet place to smoke. Of course, this was only big cities, maybe outside in the country i could find better and cheaper stuff.

 

In Laos i've only been to the capital, Vientiane, and as everyone told me "Just ask the tuktuk drivers, they always have something". So i did it, the first day i got nice and cheap weed from a tuktuk driver, it was really nice. 3 days later before crossing the border back to Thailand by bus i did it again, i ask a tuktuk driver to get me something and he did it.

 

About Thailand, i've read a lot about Koh Chang in the Gulf of Thailand close to Cambodia (never been there), but is it this the real Koh Chang where the good weed is coming from? I ask this because there is another Koh Chang in Thailand, maybe it is pronounced differently but Koh Chang is wrong as they don't use our alphabet. The other Koh Chang is in the Andaman sea close to Myanmar/Burma, and it is near a protected archipelago with difficult access and few people get authorisation to go, it looks like a nice isolated place to grow some land races.

 

However last year i brought some seeds back home from a really nice weed from Thailand. I could only germinate one seed, and it is definitely a female sativa. From what i've read Equatorial Sativas take too long to bloom. So i germinate it in end February, it is now mid September and i have the first look a like buds (still a long way of flowering). I read they are usually ready in mid November, which scares me a bit because it is starting to became a bit cold right now (I'm in Portugal BTW), but the girl looks fantastic with 3 meter high (because i topped it 2 month ago, otherwise i think it would be even bigger) only with sandy soil, water and sun, no extras.
